And had the defense forced a 3 & out to get the ball back, then the Chargers score twice & win, he becomes a jeenyus.

Not a terrible call to punt in that situation but I admit, I personally, would've done something different on 4th down. Fake the punt. Snap to short man & run it or simply run a good 4th down play to say Gates & try to pickup the 1st.

Lots of options. The 1 he chose didn't work out. That's why the head coach gets paid millions & it's a highly volatile position. Tough one.

With all due respect, it was an idiotic and gutless call at home with the game on the line

IF you don't trust your offense to get 4 freaking yards, how can you then turn around and bet on them putting together (2) long scoring drives in  less than 3 minutes ?

It was Mike Sherman-level stooopid to punt on 4th & 4 from midfield

He either fears his Fate too much

or his desserts are small

that dares not put it to the touch

to win or lose it all

They were also trotting out a guy who hadn't punted in a game since high school.  He did quite well considering, but it's not as if they're rolling Ray Guy out there to pin them on the 2.
