Also Aaron Wilkerson.
First two guys walk, and Yelich takes a first pitch ball. Gets a fastball right down the middle and flies out to shallow left field. He's just a bit off right now.
Games and Travis Shaw strike out with the bases loaded to end the top of the 1st.
CC pinch hits for Gio Gonzalez in the top of the 4th. Gonzalez had a no-hitter through 3 innings but had walked 4.
Spangenberg strikes out with the bases loaded in the 5th. He worked the count to 3-2 but the three pitches he swung and missed at were all WAY out of the strike zone.
Yelich now at 45 ABs and 56 plate appearances without an RBI.
Not terrible in terms of BA (12 for 45) and OBP (23 for 56), but only 3 extra base hits. A .333 slugging percentage over that stretch.
And now Spangenberg strikes out with the bases loaded.
Albers comes in and almost immediately implodes and CC pulls him after 4 pitches.
CC pulls Albers and Claudio gets 3 outs in 2 pitches.
Yelich has no RBIs since August 16th.
Grandal is 36 for his last 166 with 3 HRs and 17 RBIs since June 30th.
They are playing Spangenberg, Grisham, and Shaw.
Cain, Braun, and Hiura are all out. Moustakas pinch hit but otherwise wasn't available.
And somehow a band-aid pitching staff has given up no runs in 15 innings.

Now Grandal gets tossed.
And Thames gets called out on a steal attempt on a play where the 2nd base umpire just guessed at the call (no way he could see that either way). No angle to tell.
Shaw has played some good defense today, but it's like having a pitcher hit at the plate.
He's 11 for his last 69.
CC doing this with smoke and mirrors today. He has one player remaining in the lineup right now with a slugging percentage above 428 and has used 6 pitchers.
Up 1-0 after 8 and likely seeing Hader in the 9th.
Yelich gets off the snide. A long 3 run HR off Kimbrel.
As much as the Brewers have disappointed so far this year, it could be a lot worse. We could have signed Kimbrel for 3 years and 45 million.
I don't understand bringing in Hader up 4-0. Why not leave Pomeranz in?
Cubs get shutout two games in a row.
They go 10 for 62 with 1 double and no other extra base hits over the last 2 games.
CC is as good as anyone in September mode when he can make pitching switches at will. He did that yesterday because he knew he'd have a bunch of guys available today.

Perez pinch for Pomeranz. Not much point in letting Pomeranz hit, maybe Perwez goes long and we get an extra insurance run. Plus I think Hader needs work or at least build up his confidence.

Could be the start of something big....
Shaw had no chance. The Astros probably would rather see him than Arcia at this point. Even with righty-lefty matchup.

But now Hader is probably off the table in an extra inning game today.
Shaw had a shot. Yelich's heroics will likely go for naught.
George Bernard Shaw had more of a shot than Travis.
Yelich gets rung up on a pitch 3 inches high.
Terrible call
Band aids and rubber bands and wire ties
Thats the 2019 Brewers

Looks like CC may get to donate a little money. Good for him. That 10th inning call was ridiculous.
From ESPN
The strikeout call on Yelich by umpire Ben May upset manager Craig Counsell.
"It's two awful calls," Counsell said, as Yelich had also been called out on strikes in the sixth inning. "I don't know what to say. It's the magnitude of the spot, it's the hitter. It's just bad calls, it's bad umpiring. When it's Christian Yelich and the game's on the line and you miss calls, it hurts and it dramatically affects the outcome of the game."
Itβs a tragedy, really... yesterday was a helluva ballgame. Entertaining as hell. Good pace. Good performances. Clutch long balls. Two (seemingly) good teams going after it. Good baseball played, the best aspects of the game that was once the past time.
But it was not fun- or it didnβt feel that way at the end. It was basically the 2019 season in micro- stay competitive, find a way to get everyone excited, then disappoint. Opportunities galore, but disappoint.
Brewers roughing up Greinke pretty good. Single by Braun and 3 run bomb by Thames makes it 4-1 Brewers in the 4th.
Why is Shaw still getting ABs?
The degree to which Shaw forgot baseball is astounding.
I would love to retire a Brewer... https://t.co/0Gc0gHv4Ha

Schroeder alluded to how he was shaking his wrist yesterday after an at bat. The likely explanation is that the wrist is still not right (that was the initial problem this year) and other teams have scouted him and determined that they can just throw fastballs by him inside. From watching his at bats since returning from the minors, it's pretty clear he is unable to get around on inside fastballs.
He's had 11 extra base hits in 204 at bats. Roughly one every 19 ABs.
The previous two years he had 121 extra base hits in 1036 at bats. Roughly one every 8.5 ABs.
It's very unlikely you lose it that quickly at 29 years old without an injury playing a role.

Bill Hall had the misfortune of having a pretty good 3-4 year stretch during a time the Brewers sucked. He had the one year where he hit 35 HRs.
He deserved better. Just like Ben Sheets did.
Look at these statistics for Sheets in 2004: 264 strikeouts/32 walks. 0.98 WHIP with a WAR of 7.2. He lost games in which he went at least 7 innings and gave up 3, 3, 2, 0, 2, 2, 3 and 1 runs. He got no-decisions in 2 games he went over 6 innings and gave up 0 runs.
His record was 12-14 that year.
To put this in perspective, Verlander right now has a WAR of 6.7 for this year.
ANOTHER YELICH WALK OFF WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just a joy to watch this guy play baseball.
and omg my gawd..........unbelievable. The most beautiful swing in baseball. Unbelievable.
Back within 2 with 20 games left. 17 of the 20 games are to teams below .500.
Marlins (4)
Cardinals (3)
Padres (4)
Pirates (3)
Reds (3)
Rockies (3)
Cubs have 7 of their 20 against the Cards.
Doable.
Infinitely doable.
Now do it.
Orlando Arcia is a dad. His fiancΓ©e delivered twins during the game today and Arcia was able to make it to the hospital in time, Craig Counsel said. Everybodyβs healthy.
