What house money are the Cards playing with? 6.5 is doable too.

Man, it’s been such a roller coaster ride- it’s hard to get too excited yet, but you want to so badly. Yelich has hit his stride again, pitching has come around, youngsters contributing... wtf, fellas- catch the Cards.

Jordan Lyles has really kept them in this.

7 games started and 6 outstanding outings. The one exception was giving up 5 runs in 4 innings in the 15-14 victory over the Nationals. His record is 5-1 and his only loss is game he game up 1 earned run over 6 innings.

He's the Wade Miley of this year.

I don't think it’s likely- but here is what we're looking at:

Brewers go 15-5: STL will have to go 8-11 to finish; Cubs will have to go 11-9 at best. Move the Brewer win total in any direction and the Cubs and Cards would have to do the same.

Cubs/Cards play each other 7 times.

Can the Brewers do it? You betcha. They sure would redeem themselves from a disappointing summer if they pull this off.

The Cubs are much more likely to go 11-9 or worse than the Cards are to lose 11 of the last 19. The Cubs bullpen continues to be a mess and they brought up a guy today who has never played in the majors to play shortstop because of injuries.

Cards losing, Nationals lost, Diamondbacks lost.

0-2 pitch and Dean gets on to lead off...

After Shaw misses a shot to get some insurance runs. Leaves bases loaded in the top of the 9th.

I guess it's all they have, but Shaw is 0 for his last 18 and 3 for his last 35.

They cannot keep sending him out there. Moose is back, so he needs to ride pine.

Shaw is 8 for 86 with RISP this year with no extra base hits.

Brewers picked up a game on everyone last night. They’re 1 game out of the WC behind the Cubs, 5 back of STL, 3.5 behind Washington.

They still have a good lineup, and if the pitching can get their shit together they still have a shot. It would be a helluva statement to come back and play postseason baseball without the MVP.

Fitting way for the season to wind down.  They are in a playoff chase and the best player goes down with a fluke injury ala Jimmy Nelson from a few years ago.

I don’t recall a year where the Brewers had this many injuries to key players and yet there they are just 1 game out of the wild card.   Pretty impressive given everything they’ve dealt with this year.

If they get Hiura and and a healthy Moustakas back that could compensate for the loss of Yelich.

Even if they sneak into the playoffs (which I still want them to do obviously), their chances of advancing our really low. With the way that the bullpen was last year, you felt they had a chance to win it all. This year, no way.

Right now these are the guys who are out or severely limited: Yelich,  Hiura, Knebel, Woodruff, Moustakas, Nelson, Jeffress, and Burnes. Cain has been dinged up all year as well. That's arguably 9 or their top 11 or 12 players (Braun, Grandal, and Hader are the other guys in the top 12).

In the NLCS last year, the following pitchers pitched 4 or more innings:

Miley, Woodruff, Hader, Chacin, Knebel, Burnes, Guerra, and Jeffress.

They were expected 7 of those guys back this year and only Hader and Guerra are on the roster right now. The fact they are still in contention says a lot about CC. CC is really good at managing in September when the rosters expand.

The Cardinals have a brutal remaining schedule.  In addition to the 7 games against the Cubs they play series against the Brewers, Nationals, and Arizona.   It’s completely possible they could falter down the stretch.

Of the teams in the hunt for a wild card or division clearly the Brewers and DBacks have the easiest path.  The Mets and Cubs are probably next easiest path, and the Mets have the pitching to match up with any of the better teams.

Phillies and Nats play each other 5 times yet not to mention a series each against the Braves and Indians.  Ugly.

Break it all down and Milwaukee is absolutely in the mix for a playoff spot.  If they can sweep Miami and win at least 2 of   3 from St Louis they are on their way IMO.
