"I didn't know nothing about no tradition," Bryant said. "The only thing about me ... when I try to do something right, y'all try and turn it negative and I don't feel like that's right. I'm trying my best to do the right thing but it seems like I can't do the right thing because every little thing that I do y'all watching it and try to make a big deal out of it."

Way to face off with the media and blame it all on them dummy. That quote is like blood in the water to journalists. Every beat writer is going to poke him and see if they can get an inflammatory quote out of him. I love that Jerry Jones gets his camp going early to catch attention and then it blows up in his face. From the time they drafted him the Cowboy propaganda machine has been idolizing Dez's wonderful personality and the cracks show up in his first practice.

Amusing to see Dez taking advice from the Rodney HGHarrison too. I hate that guy and it brought a smile to my face when he blew the INT Eli dropped right into his hands in the SB.

Who is Roy Williams to ask anyone to do anything? This drips of Williams feeling butt hurt about someone else being brought in to push him. He needs to concentrate on catching the football and playing hard every game. If anything, Dez should be carrying Austin's gear. Heck Roy should be carrying Austin's gear.
JJSD Is absolutely correct. This has nothing to do with dignity. It has everything to do with tradition, pecking order, low paid vets getting some warm and fuzzies, developing comraderie long term - the order of things. Karma.

I doubt Jerry Rice bitched and moaned about dignity when he had to pick up somebody's stinking pads. He knew the deal. Busting this type of team tradition by a hot-shot, unproven rookie will be corrosive.

BTW, equating the NFL to your desk job is about as absurd as it gets. Should we throw all drill sergeants out of the military because some baby scrub got his feelings hurt? Please. Pick up the pads. Become a teammate.

Agreed. The traditions of the NFL, the uniforms, the history, the grainy black and white photos/video, it just doesn't relate to a desk job. As long as no one is getting hurt, this should not be a big deal for a Rook to pay his dues. Respect is earned over time and the vets are simply reminding the youngsters that they are not there yet. Once the rookies work hard and prove themselves, the respect is given... because they EARNED it.

Or let's just go along with the rest of the ever increasing pussification of American society and give little Lombardi trophies to everyone in the league for trying hard.

Scott’s Mouth Is in Midseason Form
By GREG BISHOP

quote:
If there is a more entertaining interview in the N.F.L. than Jets linebacker Bart Scott, I’d like to meet him.

(snip)

He said that quarterback Mark Sanchez had a noticeable swagger, then added that Sanchez would still have to carry his bags, at least until training camp ended. That led to a discussion of Dez Bryant, the rookie wide receiver in Dallas who recently said he would not carry any pads, especially those of the veteran receiver Roy Williams.

Off Scott went.

“If someone did that here,” he said, “I’d hang them from the goal post with a crucifix. You better have my chicken and my donuts, rookie. With sprinkles, too.”

A reporter asked Scott what would happen if a Jets player acted like Bryant. Scott said that his car would come up “missing,” or he would freeze all the clothes hanging in the player’s locker, or he would force his face into the cold tub. A process, he called the revenge he would enact.

Also has a story about Matt Stover hazing a rookie and Bart talking about what he had to do as a rookie.
