Popular SportsCenter anchor and ESPN personality Kenny Mayne is leaving the network.

Mayne revealed the split in a social media post Monday afternoon, characterizing himself as a "salary cap casualty."

Known for his dry sense of humor, Mayne joined ESPN in 1994. He was a fixture on ESPN2's motorsports and horse racing coverage before moving on to contribute features for "Sunday NFL Countdown" and anchor "SportsCenter."

He occasionally branched out beyond ESPN's umbrella to star in television commercials and in 2006, to compete in ABC-TV's "Dancing With the Stars."

From 2008 to 2011, he produced and starred in an original scripted series on ESPN.com, "Mayne Street," in which he played himself in a fictionalized version of life on sports television.

And I saw news today that Chris Berman was extended.

Boy, did ESPN screw that one up. Berman is unwatchable. Kenny was one of the few guys that I could stomach the few times I turned on ESPN. It’s a shadow of its former self. To think where it was when I was in college, and how far it’s fallen.

I cannot stand Stephen A Smith. I have the ESPN app on my phone for the scoreboard, and there’s always some new video with his big open mouth on the front page. He’s a giant carbuncle. He shits all over Wisconsin pro sports teams every chance he gets, that is when he’s not busy fellating Tom Brady or LeBron James.

I always have gotten the impression that Screamin' A wants to be the modern day Howard Cossell.   And what they extended Berman? I liked him back in the day when he did highlights with Tom Jackson but anymore he is just unwatchable.  His schtick was funny back in 1995 but not so much anymore.

I am with many of you on ESPN I just don't turn it on anymore besides a college football game and if a MLB game interests me (which is rare on ESPN).  I will say though I still really like college gameday for football.  They do a great job with that show.

For me there are a few reasons that I just don't turn on ESPN anymore.  Nothing against the NBA but I think ESPN kind of went south when they went all NBA all the time.   I get that they spent a boatload of money on it but it is all they talk about constantly.

Chris Berman is more of an emeritus type guy there now. He got annoying, but he's been there 42 years. I'm glad they keep him around as long as he's not a featured guy.

Dan Patrick and Keith Olberman were my favorites as SportsCenter anchors. They had the right mix of knowledge and the ability to not take sports as life or death.

I always have liked Bob Ley and his "Outside the Lines" features, and the 30 for 30 series were some of the best documentaries on any subject I've ever seen. The "Once Brothers" one about Petrovic, Divac, and Kukoc was really good and the one on Lenny Bias was informative. I loved the NFL matchup show with Jaworski that was on years ago.

I guess that's the problem with entertainment today in general. The soundbite culture favors people like Stephen A. Smith, Skip Bayless, Max Kellerman, Michael Irvin, etc. making stupid predictions or comments to generate outrage and clicks instead of presenting content that's informative or helps you understand the game better.
