PFF writes a series of FA articles that present a very difficult choice for their current teams. Who to keep ?

This one is about the Browns having to choose between All Pro Center Alex Mack and stud Safety TJ Ward

Given Ted's proclivity toward acquiring dudes with "J"s in their name, I 'd say TJ would be the first choice in GB.

But if there was some way to get them both from the Factory of Sadness on a train to Titletown...it would go a loooooooong way towards building a Championship squad. They both bring veteran presence to these very cerebral positions on both sides of the ball.

So last night after eleventy beers, I went through the salary cap chart for GB and cleared $31 million in about 13 seconds.

So easy, a caveman could do it

It would be incredible if the Packers could get a S like Ward or Jairus Byrd as a FA, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. I have a good feeling about the draft this year, though. Ted's whiffed badly on nearly every defensive pick he's made since Matthews, but I have a feeling he's going to get at least a couple good players in April. He's still a smart, capable GM, and I have a hard time believing that he isn't going to correct the mistakes on defensive picks he's made over the past 3 drafts. The jury is still out on Perry and Jones (Perry has one more season, and Jones has two more to turn it around), but this team badly needs to find a rookie playmaker for the defense. No more "projects" or "serviceable" starters, they need another Clay Matthews or Nick Collins to get back to the Super Bowl.

He's had two bad seasons so far (I know injuries have played a role, but that's not a free pass), a guy is basically a bust if he puts up a third. I gave Harrell three, very patient years, and by 2010, I stopped paying any attention to him. I barely noticed when he shredded his knee in week 1 that year.

Quite a few us (me included) were ready to write off Mike Neal after 2 seasons. He turned his health around nicely and with another full off season to prepare as an OLB, could be a decent ying to CMIII's yang.

Hoping Perry goes the route of Neal (health wise).

I always give a guy 3 seasons before I write him off. I've been wrong before (I thought that Nick Collins was a player that should probably be replaced after his 2nd and 3rd seasons, and then he blossomed into an All-Pro caliber player '08), but if a guy can't produce by year 3, it's usually a very safe bet that the he is a bust.

Maybe they would be less sad if they tagged and traded TJ Ward to the Packers ?

Ward may or may not be there in 3 years when they are ready to make their run, but he would fit in GB right now. And Cleveland needs more picks for a QB and others

Cleveland is going to lose him in FA anyways; might as well try to get a pick for it

I'd offer to swap spots in the first round with them ( our 21 for their 26, and toss in a 4th just to seal the deal)

Of course its not fair compensation for Cleveland, but its better than the nothing they will get for losing him in FA. Given choices, he ain't sticking around for the re-build.

On the Packers side, it gets you TJ Ward without having to outbid a stupid team with stupid money. No clue on what it would take pick-wise, but it sure is an attractive proposition in my imaginary world

.

Holy Schit !

Team president Joe Banner is stepping down and GM Michael Lombardi was fired this morning. The owner is up to his ass in allegations of fraud and a Federal probe

The Factory of Sadness continues their death spiral....

GB should offer a life raft to a couple of their players
