As frustrating as the corners have been, they're all second years and probably going through a sophomore slump. Rollins is only in his third year of playing football. I bring up Whitt for the exact reasons you've mentioned; so many want him as a lock for DC but his group has been one of the biggest underperformers on this team.

So the standard sophomore slump we've seen a lot of corners go through, including Shields, and Whitt is the problem?  The reason why Whitt gets praised is because a good majority of these guys come out the other side of the slump and play fantastic ball, UDFA's and 1st rounders alike.    The fact that Shields and his vet presence isn't available is also part of the problem.

I don't know how much you can blame Perry specifically either considering Burnett has been used as a hybrid LB for a part of the season for coverage close to the line and pressure.

Those two are way down on the list when it comes to ****ty assistant coaches.

I would trust the kids playing press man coverage over the front 7 bringing pressure. The front 7 hasn't shown it can bring pressure on a consistent basis. The kids haven't shown they know how to play zone.

If you're not getting pressure, zone is the safer play.   Man is better with it to take away the quick hitters.

Depending on the opposing QB, I don't mind them playing zone between the 20's.  We don't have the talent to man up and dominate so make the offense play mistake free and earn it.

Agree.

The boundary coverage has mostly been exposed while Hyde was playing S.  There isn't squat coaching can do to make Hyde have the wheels needed to cover that ground.  Last week HCD took a bad angle, that was an anomaly.

The only complaint I can sympathize with directed at those two coaches is the decision to play Hyde at S.  Even then, it's Hyde or two UDFA's.   I'd take the slow experienced guy at that position too.  It's called Saftey for a reason.

Cook looked good in the 1st DET game, until he left the game with the hurt ankle. Packers were up 24-3 when that happened, and we're on a TD drive. IIRC they scored 2 plays after he went out.

AR seems to like that option.

Looking back on that first game, we only ran the ball 7 times in the first half & scored 31 pts. We ran it 17 times in second half & scored 3 pts. Now that is when Lacy was playing & Lions may have been playing "run' defense for most of the game. Up by 21 at half, MM may have been content to keep running in second half even though we had so much success passing in first half. With more injuries to their DBs now, I would think that the Lions would play us nickel a lot & dare us to run?

Lions coach Jim Caldwell on Aaron Rodgers' struggles early in the season compared to how he's playing now : "I'm sure, as you recall, I did not buy into that. This guy is as good as they come."

The Packers played on Saturday. The Lions played Monday night. Lions coach Jim Caldwell wouldn't complain about it. "It really doesn't matter," Caldwell said on a conference call with reporters at Lambeau. "People look for built-in excuses. We've played on short weeks. We don't complain about it. It has no bearing on this week."

Aaron Rodgers was named NFC offensive player of the week after his performance against the Vikings on Saturday, when he threw for four touchdowns and ran for another. It was Rodgers' 15th career player of the week award, which ranks third among active players behind Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Bob scouts Lions, take 2

Some pretty good gems in there. I didn't realize since Levy's injury and coming back, apparently not the same player:

Snip-

Linebacker DeAndre Levy, a terrific player in 2013-’14, started and played 33 snaps against Dallas. He returned as a backup in Game 13 after sitting out 11 games with a thigh injury.

Last year, the Milwaukee Vincent product missed all but 17 snaps because of a hip injury.

“He’s back playing again but he doesn’t look the same to me as he did in previous years,” said one personnel man. “I think he’s lost some explosiveness and power. He’s not making as many plays. He looks lighter. It’s hard to tell with pads on but he looks 218, 220.”

Snip-

When the Packers play the Detroit Lions on Sunday night at Ford Field, the Lions will be missing not only their nickel back but also probably their top cornerback at a position that wasn’t strong even at the start of the season. How the Lions handle their deficiencies in back-end personnel could well decide the NFC North Division championship game.

“Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb if he plays, those are positive matchups,” one scout said. “And you’ve got a quarterback who can exploit those things. I just think the clock’s going to strike 12 on Detroit.

“They’ve got Asa Jackson, who’s off the street, playing nickel. Nevin Lawson is a fourth or fifth (corner), at best. Bademosi is really a safety. Slay with a hamstring. Whew.”

I agree with the assessment about Stafford looking leaner and more agile. I noticed against Dallas that he had some quickness that I hadn't seen before. He's not in Rodgers category, but that's an area where I think he could cause some headaches against our D. They've struggled in short yardage, but if they suck the DL, especially the interior DL, up-field then I think Stafford is more than capable of ripping off some solid runs for conversions. In the end this D will live and die by the pass rusher, if they get home then Stafford will make mistakes. If they give him a clean pocket then it will be a shootout.

Stafford is going to run with reckless abandon if that's his option. Remember his 7 yard scramble through Chicago's defense to score the winning TD a few weeks back. Headfirst between a LB and S. As has been mentioned. Stafford is going to do everything he possibly can to win this game.

This game will be won by the team that wants the division title more.

I think that we kept a lot of UDFA CB's in order to have Witt train them. Its kinda like throwing something against the wall and seeing what sticks. There was a reason that they were not drafted but some of them have NFL potential. Train them in Man and use them in Zone until they get their feet under them and can be trusted in Man again. Some players like Gunter may not have the athletic skill the others have but he seems to have good cover skills in man, as long as he is not in a foot race. As far as Randall and Rollins I think that they are still learning the position and will get burned one time and get a turnover the  next. At least we did not have to pay Josh Norman money and we  get a corps of DB's instead of one guy. I see potential down the road but we have to take our lumps on the way.

They are all young and inexperienced.  If Shields doesn't return TT really needs to considering bringing in a vet.

One would think that Shields would already be in the room helping because was an UDFA. But I agree, a vet could help. Someone like a Charles Woodson is needed in that role.

Well the Lions haven't won a playoff game since like 1991, so I hope it isn't only about desire.  Their entire team knows no playoff success whatsoever, so they're just burning with it and you have to give them the edge on that, especially at home.  They're desperate.

I'm going with the team that limits mistakes.  That is where Rodgers gives us the biggest advantage.  It's also why I want to take the crowd out of it, so he can work his audibles, the hard count and the no-huddle if we have to.

Focus boys. Beat them with experience and let Stafford try to do too much.  If he puts up 2 INT's, the title is ours.

Sam Shields has been in Florida through most of the season. Compare that to Eddie Lacy who's been in GB, in team meetings, and in the building on a daily basis rehabbing.

That should tell you all you need to know about Sam's future in GB.

Ruin Them!   pull that rug out from under them.  I'm so hoping Washington wins so it's for all the marbles - win or go home - and we keep detroit from the playoffs once again.   this is and has been the playoffs for five weeks - keep that train a-rolling!

They need a vet on the field.  That can cover up a bunch of young guy sins.  I'm sure they are all diligently studying away but not having that vet presence makes a difference IMO.

I think the problem with that is those guys are being hybridized.  Obviously they can be leaders on the field but a vet CB takes some pressure off youngsters.  Hopefully both Randall and Rollins take their lumps and learn and become the vets.  I personally think Rollins has a couple years yet but Randall isn't far off.

Aerosmith.... once again it's week 17 on the road against a division opponent with the Division Title on the line.

They just need to boost their football IQ. I actually think we will end up seeing Randall move to FS to pair with HHCD down the road. Randall is a good CB, but I think he would be more useful as a centerfielder tracking the ball. Right now I think we have 2 SS's in HHCD and Burnett, we need a true FS to attack the ball.

Certainly been harder to find a good FS than it has been to find a good CB since Nick Collins retired. Our best CBs over the last decade, not including our current group, have been a veteran FA (Woodson), UDFA's (Shields, Tramon), 6th round pick (Al Harris) 2nd round pick (Hayward), and 4th round (House). We've only had one good FS over the last decade and he was a 2nd round pick (Nick Collins).

If Shields retires then we will get roughly 18 mil in cap relief over the next two years. We can't cut him this year, there would be like 14 mil of dead money on that contract in 2017. He needs to retire, but if he doesn't then he will be in the fold next year.

Not sure that's right GD. Reports are if the Packers cut Shields in 2017, it's a 3.2 mil cap hit in dead money and a savings of 9 million. He's not signed beyond 2017. His cap number is like 12.5 in 2017.

No backing into the playoffs, boys. If we don't win this one we don't deserve it.
