I wonder if Slaton will be this year's version of Rasul Douglas.
Wouldn't that be nice. Not sure he can cover as well.

"Jack Heflin has maybe been the most consistent defensive lineman on the team in the preseason, but he has also been the fourth-most played interior linemen even with the teamβs three starters held out of competition. The race for the sixth defensive line spot, if the Packers keep a sixth defensive lineman, comes down to Chris Slayton and Heflin, who have both registered 26 key snaps over the last two weeks.
With that being said, Slayton did start in the teamβs base 3-4 set, which could hint at where the team may be leaning. This preseason, Heflin has out-snapped Slayton 27-16 as a 3-4 defensive end, but Slayton has out-snapped Heflin 29-6 as a nickel defensive tackle, which frames the bigger question:
If the Packers need a sixth lineman, is he going to be used to spell the starters in base or sub-packages ?"

2 QB: Rodgers, Love
3 RB: Jones, Dillon, Taylor, (Goodson PS)
7 WR: Lazard, Cobb, Watkins, Doubs, Watson, Rodgers, Winfree (Toure PS)
4 TE: Tonyan, Lewis, Deguara, Davis
9 OL: Bahk, Jenkins, Myers, Runyan, Capt Tom, Rhyan, Newman, Nijman, Jones
6 DL: Clark, Reed, Lowry, Slaton, Wyatt, Heflin (C Slayton PS)
5 OLB: Gary, Smith, Enagbare, Galeai, Hamilton
4 ILB: Campbell, Walker, Barnes, McDuffie
6 CB: Jaier, Stokes, Rasual, Nixon, Thomas, Jean-Charles
4 S: Amos, Savage, Davis, Abernathy
3 Specialists. Crosby, Odonnell, Coco
Thatβs a pretty good list. I had a thought that maybe the new kicker would be a better choice in the long run over Crosby. He certainly kicks further. But I know how much the team loves Mason so I doubt that it happens. Yet it might be nice to keep Ahmed on the PS.

Edit: Unless they count on AmRodgers becoming a RB.
Rodgers will definitely get some RB snaps in his poor man's Deebo role.
And if they were to land Goodson and Taylor on the PS that's 6 weeks of potential RB game day roster elevations while they wait on Kylin Hill.

There'd be a certain efficiency to not being good at two positions,.

He has to stay on the 53. Winfree can go to the PS
I dunno about Toure. I think there's lots of guys like Toure, out there. I think he'd be safe on the PS. And after all the Rodgers drama and all the Rodgers praise of Winfree, do you think he'd be okay if GB put Winfree on the PS?

This, combined with some of Gutey's comments, is why I'm leaning toward them only keeping two RBs.
Talk of Rasheed Walker putting himself in the mix for a spot on the 53 with his performance Thursday.
Demovsky with his latest projection. He's got them only keeping two RBs with both Winfree and Toure making the cut (sounds very plausible to me).
Wonder if the ankle sprain suffered by Sam Darnold will effect Etling? Darnold could be out 4-6 weeks and the Panthers will need a temp back-up for Mayfield.
Colin Kaepernick is available.

There are 30 other teams saying the same thing about their 3rd string QB who won't be in the league a year from now. Every team thinks every other team is clamoring for their bubble players, but they aren't.
I donβt think the Packers need to be too worried about losing first year players they want to bring back to the practice squad. Every single team in the NFL has a handful of low round and/or UDFAs that they think will be βstolenβ by another team. We, as fans, hear the hype about some of the Packers fringe players but what do other teams get to see? Basically not much. Practices are mostly closed and thereβs limited game film. I would suspect that the Packers will be able to bring back all of their players to the PS should the player want to come back.
Agree with that generally but there are typically a few fringe roster players that the GM doesn't want to risk exposing to waivers (more often than not his own draft picks).
If Iβm not mistaken, a team making a waiver claim needs to put the claimed player on the 53, meaning that player is replacing someone who initially βmade the final cutβ. I believe there were less than 30 waiver claims a year ago at this time. And I donβt think the Packers lost anyone.
Also, there will certainly be some surprise cuts of veterans due to $$, age, βgoing in a different directionβ, etc. Another area for teams to explore to bolster rosters. Cut players (4+ vested years) are not subject to waiver wire and can sign with any team they choose.

It is just that Etling has experience with 2 of the best teams in the NFL. He would be a great temp addition to a team like Carolina that only needs a back up QB for 4-6 weeks. Once he is cut if signed by panthers he could always come back to Packers practice squad.
If Etling is claimed , good for him, a good opportunity. Third string QBs are a nickel a dozen.
Packers were sure Taysom Hill would clear waivers. Risk is relatively small, but it does exist.
And as it turns out, not that big of a deal he was lost.
I think GB would have viewed him as a QB only, not the βgadget playβ guy that smartest-coach-in-stadium Sean Payton implemented him as.

And, if he is claimed by another team, ah well. Big deal.

" In 2019, Aaron Rodgers was ticked that the Packers got rid of Jake Kumerow. GM Brian Gutekunst wouldnβt release Winfree, who Rodgers has raved up a couple times. Right?"
βI know that heβs engaged in a lot of conversations with myself and heβs engaged in a lot of conversations with Gutey,β LaFleur said. βSo, I think thatβs something over the next couple days that weβre just going to have to work through β his opinion, not only at the wide receiver position, but, in particular, the guys on offense.β

You say that now, but just wait until Ruvell Martin gets into Canton.

Rodgers was wrong. Who knew?
Herman out with his final roster projection. Team keeps two RBs and both Winfree and Toure.
I have read that Russ Wilson has his own office in the Broncos complex and he has extra rooms for his βteamβ on the road.

Iβts not uncommon to allow mid level managers to have a say in who is on their team. Same concept. He has to lead these men on the field and is a seasoned pro. It just makes sense to take his input on fringe roster guys.
If Iβm asked to lead a project at work, bet your ass I want input on who is on my crew.

In that case, however, you're really more of a boss, right?
In all honesty, I certainly have sympathy with the idea of MLF and Gutekunst asking Rodgers for his opinion about the other players on offense, and taking those opinions under advisement. But it still has to be management's decision. There's a reason players aren't GMs, and you can't let the inmates run the asylum.
And if anybody didn't get it, my comment about giving Rodgers his own locker room was a reference to Favre supposedly having a separate locker room at the end of the Mike Sherman era.
All Rodgers said was that he wanted a seat at the table.
Jersey Al with some interesting cuts
Not a seat at the kids' table?
