I think the key is, to have great players, but realize that in order to win championships, they need to be a team player and not get the max $$$. This is where TT/MM judge character and "packer people" during the draft. (Obviously, a lot easier said than done).

Shannon Sharpe pointed to his 2 rings and said something like this... "everyone enjoys the dough because if offers you the freedom you want in your life, then he pointed to his rings, and said these are your fame and respect".

Maybe it comes down to a simple question of do players want $$$ or respect, because it is extremly hard to have both.

As for Flacco, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens draft a QB this year. He'll get his dough, and it MIGHT make the AR deal a bit more expensive.

According to Brian A. Shactman of CNBC, Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta, will be looking to leverage that success into a massive payday for his client. Linta told Shactman he believes Flacco should be the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

“When you do a contract of this magnitude, you look at what is the player’s body of work presently,” Linta said. “And what are the expectations going forward over the next four, five or six years.

“Joe wins on both accounts.”

realistic/reasonable, from Wilde:

Asked if it was more important to be the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback or sign a deal that pays him what he deserves while also leaving the team cap maneuverability to sign other players, Rodgers replied, “It kind of is what it is, as far as that goes. The team, when they’re ready to talk contract, we’ll get there when we get there.

"Obviously you’ve got to be able to have guys around you to compete and win every year, and we’ll see what happens with some of the free agents that we have. When that time comes, we’ll get a deal done. I’m not worried about that. I think the Packers want to keep me around for a little while longer, and I’d love to be a Packer for life.”
I love the way some people are certain Flacco wont get the 20 million per year, more than one player has been awarded unwarranted huge salaries in the past in all pro sports and I think this will be another case of that happening but no one really knows the inner circles of teams owners and GMs and how they really feel about their players and what they think they are worth,it will be interesting to see how much the Packers think Rodgers is worth to them.
It's already starting in Baltimore:

Anquan Boldin: I'll retire if released

If the Ravens release Boldin to make room for Flacco's $20 million, I'm going to laugh. Outside of Torrey Smith, who is a great receiver, they have nothing else that scares me at receiver besides Boldin.

I know this will come up, so I might as well say it. If Boldin is released, do the Packers take a look at him? He's 32, but still in top shape, and I don't care what his #'s say. He's still an elite receiver. He's making $6 mil a year right now. I know we're looking for money to pay Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews, but I bet that Aaron would love to have a big receiver like Anquan in Green Bay. The guy catches everything, and $6 mil is about what I'd pay Greg to stay. He might be a real bargain at that amount.

Let that sink in a bit.

I know what he said, Henry. No need to let it sink in.

Maybe he does really retire if released. But athletes often say one thing, and then do another. As Packer fans, we know this all too well, and if the price is right, he's an option the Packers could at least explore.

I think Boldin is playing the PR game. This is a brilliant move on his part. If the Ravens find other ways to pay Flacco, and end up keeping him, he looks good, and becomes even more popular in Baltimore. If he is released, and does retire, he's loved in Baltimore. Either way he looks good.

If Ted Thompson were to call him, and say "Hey Anquan, how'd you like to come and catch passes from Aaron Rodgers for $6 million a year", I'd be surprised if he didn't at least consider it.

Teams were contemplating a franchise-tag run at Flacco before the postseason
profootballtalk.com

So with the Ravens in more than a bit of a cap mess and with teams like the Browns having more than $40 million in spending space for 2013, a decision to do anything other than apply the exclusive franchise tag means that a team like the Browns could fashion a front-loaded deal with, say, a $40 million 2013 roster bonus that the Ravens could never be able to match without cutting half the players under contract and signing no one in free agency.

And with the exclusive franchise tag requiring the Ravens to set aside more than $20 million in cap space as of March 12 (the number could go down before or after that date as other quarterbacks restructure their deals), the only good way out of this mess will be for the Ravens to sign Flacco to a contract that pays him what he wants under a structure that entails manageable cap numbers until the salary cap spikes in 2015.

As good as that unit has been, there will definitely be a transition of sorts this upcoming season. Driver's leadership and experience will no longer be there, Jennings is most likely gone, and Finley at this time is a question mark.

I still see them as a very good bunch, but those guys fed off one another in order to be productive, mainly Jordy benefitting from Jennings on the other side.

I like the farm system Ted has ushered in. It's always nice to see new draft picks and FA's grow within the system and mature over a couple of years.

But the idea of a steady, consistent workhorse like Boldin would be very intruiging in this offense.

As much as I'm disheartened by Jennings' statements and apparent attitude toward moving on, and his recent injury bug, I can't deny the leader and stalwart he's been when he's on the field. That won't be easily replaced, and the dynamic will shift in some way if/when he's gone.

Yes, they won't pay Jennings but paying Boldin makes sense. Do you really think Uncle Ted would spend FA money on the WR position considering all the other needs? Asinine.

Fair enough. It doesn't exactly address the notion that Jennings no longer wants to be in Green Bay, but I get your point.

And yeah, they have a bunch of other needs. My point is I believe the WR unit will take a hit this year, and many fans just assume the group will just continue to be the best in the league.

I don't care for speculation as to who Ted should go after in free agency. I just feel like he might wanna look to be a bit proactive in KEEPING this unit as dangerous as it has been, and a guy like Boldin could certainly help that happen.
If Cobb, Nelson, Jones and Finley are healthy, that's still a group I put in the top 25% of the NFL particularly when combined with Rodgers. They'll miss Jennings, and yet I think this group has shown they can withstand his absence.

The problem will be if any 1 of those guys gets hurt for a significant amount of time. They could afford to have a guy get hurt before with almost no dropoff. That likely changes with no more Driver or Jennings on the roster.
Jennings was a complete non factor last year. They got by without him. The problems arose because they were also missing at least one other guy for most of the time Jennings was down, Nelson in particular. The fact that they had no credible running attack and a crap OL didn't help matters much either. Fixing the offensive line would do far more to help the offense than re-signing Jennings or getting some other WR would ever do. Cobb/Nelson/Jones just need to get healthy and stay that way next year. If they can, they will still be a top five WR trio. Even keeping two out of three healthy is more than enough if they fix the rest of the offense (you know, the problems that lead to McCarthy calling 12 rushing attempts in a game or Rodgers getting sacked 51 times in a season). A WR in the first two rounds would signify that Air Coryell has come to Green Bay. Receiver/QB feast, defense/OL/RB famine Air Coryell teams may get a lot of games on primetime TV, but they'll never win a championship.
I hope Quarless can come back to 100 percent. If he does, that gives us a legitimate two-tight-end set and I think we were missing that last year. If we get that, it could help open up the running game by giving our Oline some help and the D wouldn't know which way the play was going. It would also give us some options underneath to clear out the linebackers, and get the safeties off our receivers which would help them get open as well. Add a good lineman to two good tight ends, and I think we're in a lot better shape than if we added a WR. Besides, I have faith if TT wants a WR, he'll find one to develop in the later rounds.
Joe Flacco's career stats

In his five seasons in the NFL, Flacco has yet to crack 4,000 passing yards in a season, a mark which is now considered relatively pedestrian in today's NFL. His career QB rating is 86.3, which is also pedestrian. I know Flacco has become a regular fixture in the playoffs and is now a Super Bowl MVP, but you don't give a Powerball-style contract to a QB whose career up to this point has been mostly "meh".

This is a contract that Rodgers deserves. He has played on a high level consistently in his career (as have Brady, Brees and Manning, who have been rewarded accordingly) and has made the case for himself arguably better than any other QB. Flacco hasn't. Not. Even. Close.
Winning the Super Bowl is a team achievement. Being paid $20 million a year is rewarding a very average quarterback for his team's accomplishment.

He's never been to a Pro Bowl. Not even once in his five years in the league. Yet now he's being paid as the very best player in the entire NFL, and it's plain stupid.

If the Ravens wanted to bump up his salary a little bit as a thank you, no problem. But $20 million a year is irresponsible and stupid.

What it seems the Raven front office doesn't grasp is that by giving Flacco so much money, they're not going to be able to keep the other pieces that helped him win that Super Bowl.

Let's see how Flacco does when his offensive line starts breaking apart. When they have to release Boldin because they can lo longer afford to keep him. That $20 million is going to be an albatross around the team's neck.

Rodgers will earn more than that, and that contract, too, will be way too much. But Rodgers is capable of carrying a team on his back. Flacco cannot.
