Friday practice report: Williams questionable

It’s looking unlikely that cornerback Tramon Williams will play Sunday at Carolina.

He missed his third straight day of practice becasue of the bruised shoulder he sustained in the opener against New Orleans. As soon as reporters were allowed into practice today, Williams ducked inside the Don Hutson Center.

Coach Mike McCarthy has said Williams could play against the Panthers even if he didn’t practice at all this week, but Williams may have to make significant progress in the next 48 hours to be ready.

Outside linebacker Vic So’oto (back) also did not practice. Neither did left tackle Chad Clifton, but that’s his usual Friday schedule to rest his knees.

We’ll have the full injury report and comments from McCarthy after practice, which is scheduled to wrap up at 12:30.

UPDATE (12:30p.m.): Here’s the full practice report:

RB Alex Green was added to the injury report with an Achilles, was limited in practice and was listed as questionable.

LT Chad Clifton (knee) Did not participate, Probable

TE Jermichael Finley (ankle) Limited Participation, Probable

CB Davon House (ankle) Full Participation, Probable
DE Mike Neal (knee), Out

LB Vic So’oto (back) Did Not Participate, Out

TE Ryan Taylor (hip) Full Participation, Probable

CB Tramon Williams (shoulder) Did Not Participate, Questionable

LB Frank Zombo (shoulder) Out

McCarthy: We’ll give Tramon the next 48 hours. Mentally not worried about him, he’s a front-row, pen-in-hand guy in the meetings. He’s making progress.

Green aggravated his Achilles, so we pulled him out of practice. He’ll be getting treatment. This is something that he told Pepper Burruss about right at the beginning of practice.

From ESPN (the final word on Panthers):

The Panthers will run the ball.

Yes, rookie Cam Newton threw for 422 yards in his debut, and that was very encouraging. But Newton’s not going to do that every week. Carolina has two excellent running backs in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. The Panthers need to get them involved in the offense and try to control the clock. Newton’s not ready to win a shootout with Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers. He needs his running backs to help keep Rodgers off the field as much as possible

As soon as I see an injury report on the Panthers, I'll post.
Panthers injury report:

Name Position Injury Wed. Thu. Fri. Game Status
Davis, Thomas LB Groin LP LP FP probable
Otah, Jeff T Head DNP DNP DNP doubtful
Pilares, K WR Ankle FP FP FP probable
Thomas, Josh CB Thigh FP FP FP probable

In addition to Beason, Otah looks like he's out. That's a plus for GB and may stifle the "double trouble" RB attack some.

Panthers rookie faces huge test
Undrafted tackle Bell to start first NFL game vs. Packers, star linebacker Matthews

In the Panthers' locker room before Thursday's practice, veteran receiver Steve Smith sat in his locker giving undrafted rookie Byron Bell a pop quiz.

Smith was quizzing Bell, slated to start in place of Jeff Otah at right tackle Sunday against Green Bay, about the pass-rush moves of Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews, who will be lined up opposite Bell in Green Bay's 3-4 scheme.

Bell aced it.

"We were just going over a test right now. He seems like he's getting there," Smith said of Bell. "He knows his opponent. He knows his moves. So I'm encouraged."

Bell has passed just about every test he's faced this summer.

Undrafted out of New Mexico, Bell came to training camp as a long shot to make the team. Rookie free agents faced an even steeper climb to a roster spot this year with veterans taking more snaps after the lockout wiped out minicamps and OTAs.

Bell, 6-foot-5, 339 pounds, was the only undrafted rookie on the Panthers' Week 1 roster, and he played a series late in the first half of the loss at Arizona.

In Week 2, he is expected to get the start against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Though Panthers coach Ron Rivera left open the possibility Otah could play, Bell said coaches told him Wednesday he would be in the lineup while Otah recovers from a concussion suffered at Arizona.

"There's no other way to open it up, my first career start against (a player) who had 13 1/2 sacks last season, Clay Matthews," Bell said. "It's unreal to this day. Coming out of the University of New Mexico, really didn't have an outstanding year my last two years. Didn't get drafted. One thing I continued doing was just keep working. I never let any of that stop me, and I won't let it stop me."

Sounds like a good kid but that's one hell of a debut to have to make against CMIII and BJ Raji and co.
