I suspect that Clay Matthews, realizing that the Packers were in the playoffs regardless of the outcome, and being double teamed on almost every play, either deliberately or inadvertently dialed it back a little bit against the Lions.

His dropped INT certainly indicates there might have been a little lack of focus on his part.

I'm not saying that Clay was dogging it, rather that he looked to be preserving himself a little bit. With playoffs still in question the previous week against Minnesota, CMIII played like a man possessed the entire game. Whereas the game Sunday night became just a little less important (although another division title ain't chopped liver) following Washington's loss.

I guess another way of saying this is that this past Sunday night wasn't "It is time"  territory for our most important defensive player while he is still playing through a very tough injury for a pass rusher.

That changes starting this coming Sunday. Bloodline will be there, I have no doubt.

They must be or have been grooming someone to play corner because this scenario has been very close to happening all year. I find it difficult to believe that they have not added anyone at that position during this stretch. Randall looks like he should be on IR or at least shutdown for a couple of weeks and hope he can play if we make it deeper into the playoffs. He has knee, groin and shoulder issues right? He obviously has been trying but cannot make it through a game and cannot reliably cover anyone so what is the benefit of playing him? Not sure what this issue is with Rollins. Think Woodson might consider playing? I know, safety at this point but.....

Ben Fennell's killing it as always! Yes other posters have said this but it bears repeating. The route tree analyses he put up from the Lions game are eye watering.

Lots of great Packer-Giants comps working their way into his Twitter feed this week, too.

Just one example of what he keeps bringing to our table... Long may he run!

@BenFennell_NFL: #Packers dime package w/ 5 safeties! (And Gunter actually played some FS at Miami too!) ..depth will always be tested, just never know where

The Pack is 3-5 in the playoffs the past 5 seasons, including wins over the Joe Webb quarterbacked Vikings and the 9-7 Redskins last year.

The Packers under McCarthy are 8-7 in the playoffs. 5 of those 7 losses have come on the last play of the game.

Regression to the mean. The 4-0 road run in 2010 is off-set by the 5 last play losses?

....Really concerned by CMIII's play against Detroit.  I know he was getting doubled a lot, but it looked to me like he regressed on the injury. ..

Agree with your comments on CM3. I expected a solid performance based on his game vs the Vikes, but it looked as if he was just going through the motions vs Detroit.
If he is going to draw some double teams, however, Peppers (especially) and our other OLBs (that means YOU, Datone!) must take advantage.

Detroit stopped worrying about helping Decker against Matthews when it became apparent Matthews had an almost non-functioning left shoulder, literally cutting his pass rush moves by about 2/3.

MM has a way of getting his team into another gear in the playoffs.  The biggest example being what they did in ARZ down to 5th string WR's.  Unless he's already used that gear to run the table, I would expect the unexpected on sunday.

We all love the 2010 Super Bowl run, but other than the very close, very fortunate, and compelling victory over Dallas in 2014, I am having a hard time seeing how the Packers have reached another gear in the playoffs recently.

In 2014 they limped into the playoffs with AR's bum calf, beat a very hot DAL team and destroyed SEA @SEA for 56:00.  I'd call that another gear.  Last year they looked like dog**** the whole second half of the season and were running on fumes at WR.  They still beat WAS @ WAS and took a hot ARZ team to OT @ AZ.  The same AZ team that trucked them a couple weeks before.  I'd call that another gear.  The only game where a MM team clearly fell apart in the playoffs was 2011.

Tillman talk here shows just how desperate we are in the secondary. If we are talking about "Veteran Presence" in the locker room I prefer Woodson. However, if we are talking about an actual player I would prefer Tillman. But neither one could actually be ready to play cold in our current defense IMHO.

Pennell could play tomorrow on the defense. And he is a fair to good run stopper.

To be honest, I don't know how much Pennell was bringing to the table before.  Big body, run stopper type but I haven't seen that much of change with Kenny Clark getting more time since he's been out.  Rotation I guess.

Tillman wouldn't be ready, he just wouldn't.  The idea is definitely born of desperation.  I honestly like the idea of Hyde and Brice on the field at CB/S respectively from what we've seen previously.  Hyde will get beat but I think the Wizard would be able to implement his madcappery more effectively with Hyde at CB.

Yup, rotation

Packers DL rotation shows Lowry with about 12-15 snaps/game and the same for Kenny Clark. Pennell plays mostly 5-tech and some NT, but GB doesn't use base 3-4 very often ( zero snaps vs Detroit). He would be useful vs Dallas OL, when GB will use more base defense. More Bigs can't hurt

Yep Pennell is a big. In the games I watched Lowry got pushed around some. Pennell did not.

Witt can coach and coach well (esp. considering his own struggles with Dyslexia) but raw is raw. These guys were not drafted for a reason. Even a "diamond in the rough" starts out as a lump of coal. I read that the defensive game plan sheet got a lot smaller by the end of the game. Tell them what to do and hope for the best. Who knows, maybe youthful enthusiasm will win out?

Right.  And there was a situation well beyond football that contributed to that.

I like what I've seen from Brice - speed and appears to like hitting people.  Inexperience is hopefully his only downside at this point.
Coach him up Whitt!!

Darren Perry might not want to give up one of our better up and coming safeties. I would think they will move Burnett to slot corner role again with Brice manning the safety spot.

As for Pennell, hoping he comes back with fresh legs and ready to prove he's not such a dumbass after all.

Brice is a guy that definitely needs to improve his football IQ and his technique. He's raw and over-aggressive. He also doesn't wrap and tackle, he hits with his shoulder and it doesn't always bring down the ball carrier. He's a guy I think they hoped they could redshirt along with Evans, Dorleant, and Hawkins. Unfortunately all of them have been forced into the lineup for one reason or another.

The key with OBJ/Manning is throwing them off their timing by jamming OBJ at the line and getting pressure up the middle on Manning. Manning, like many QBs, can make any throw when he has a clean pocket and no pressure. Force him to throw early and he's very inaccurate. You won't stop OBJ, but if you can disrupt him at the line and then bracket him, you can limit his impact like we did in the first game.

As usual, the one person on X4 who actually watches the games before he speaks.

Agree on your assessment of Brice. Spot on.

As far as OBJ, I think that Gunter is the best player on the roster who can jam and frustrate him. I would love to see OBJ have a fit and get flagged for it.
