I can't think of many things in life I'd rather NOT come across that a mama bear with cubs. He's lucky that turned out well.
Had mama decided to give chase, she could've run him down in just a few seconds...

I live in the Catskill Park preserve, where the state owns some 40% of the land, although a lot of that is farther west in Ulster County.  It's nice to have no real neighbors on three sides, although there are of course disadvantages.

So lots of people here (and in Adirondack Park up north) are quite close to a fair bit of nature.

I live in a mountain town at about 8500 ft elevation,  I've had bears on my second story back deck a few times and the one night I forgot to close my garage door I had a mama and 2 little fellas in my garage.  We see them often crossing roads and resting during the day in the trees. 

All in all they are pretty good neighbors.
