New Year, let's start up a new thread here and keep it pretty limited to coaching search, interviews, updates, and how Pat Fitzgerald is a meathead that shouldn't come anywhere close to Green Bay, unless they schedule a game there with the Badgers

I am watching NW play Utah.  I want to see what a Pat Fitzgerald coached team looks like.  Short throw offense and runs that don't go anywhere - so far.  Looks like he will fit right in.

(got to post in duplicate - didn't realize that one of the three "New HC" threads was closed)

Bears expecting to lose? Thought he couldn’t be interviewed until eliminated from playoff or the week before Super Bowl I’d make it that far.

Edit: Apparently if they win they can interview with stipulations. In the event of a win, assistants can interview before the divisional round but only in their current employer’s home city. The assistant’s current team can also dictate which day the interview takes place.

Jan. 6Assistant coaches under contract to playoff clubs that have byes in the Wild Card games may be interviewed for head coaching positions through the conclusion of the Wild Card games.

Interesting...coordinators in the playoffs can only do one interview a week until they are out. That McNumbNuts™ has chosen the Packers speaks loudly.

If that’s the case, why does Fandango have two scheduled next week?

i still think Mcdaniels is the choice. He would have credibility with Rodgers because of the Tom Brady relationship. Rodgers and Brady both think highly of each other and Brady has said Rodgers would flourish in that system. Rodgers would probabaly buy into it so his last few years could be as productive as Bradys. We also start a new trend of going from Mike to Mc

Munchak is underrated. Steelers OL has been epic since he took over. He had total garbage QB at Tennessee.

Munchak is easily one of the top 2 OL coaches in football. He is an OL coaching great. I’d be cool with him as HC if I thought he could attract a great staff. I just don’t know that he can.

IMO McDaniels is probably the best bet to attract the kind of young offensive minds this team needs and he’d likely retain Pettine. GB has requested an interview with Lafleur as well. Another good candidate and kind of a break from the “experienced” candidates Murphy and Gute contacted initially. Good to see Murphy isn’t painting a small target for the kind of coach he wants.

This coaching search is as much about how the entire power structure of the Packers changes as it is about bringing in a HC.  A lot of uncertainty.

When you put it that way, my first thought is Dorsey/Wolf. Can't say I'd want Eliot at the top, simply due to age and limited experience, but I'd be a heck of a lot more comfortable right now with Dorsey leading this search.

Lots of names being floated out there.  I'm a hard no on Fitzgerald.  College guys usually don't do very well when they make the jump to the NFL.  That may not be fair to Fitz and company, but whatever.

GB is flying to NE on Friday to meet with McDaniels and then to NO on Saturday to meet with Campbell.

I hope they land McDaniels, although I have a few reservations.

Packers planning? Or Murphy planning? This franchise is the crown jewel. Let the right candidate come to you.

I think most of us think GB is the "crown jewel" ....but I also think Murphy and company would be foolish to make that arrogant error.  Be aggressive, search for the right guy and go get his ass.

You make a good point. I just interpret that as a reach. Maybe I'm reaching by assuming that, but if the guy publicly stated he has no interest in the NFL, who or what is the impetus behind this report? And it comes with the territory that pitching to someone who's said they have no interest usually means tossing in some incentives that normally wouldn't be offered,

I agree with being aggressive. TT was aggressive and saw the components he was looking for in MM. We can't say it was a terrible marriage for a good while. I just think I'd be more confident if it was a football guy having final say. We don't know about Gute at this point, but he's been in the organization and he knows the standard. He seemed to handle himself decently in his first draft, and I think he deserves more handle on the reins with this decision. Maybe the concern is all for naught, but Murphy is clearly on the business end of things, so I think it's perfectly natural for so many of us to have trepidation about his football acumen.

Good coach,  but NFL stress might literally make his head explode.

**** that guy.  College coaches have enough concern coming into the NFL.  I would sing the praises of Fitzgerald before Meyer.  Let's leave the shitheels of college coaching where they belong.

I really like the idea of LaFleur more and more.  As others have pointed out, Campbell has proved his mettle as well as an interim and positions coach.  These are definitely the guys I'd like to see.  Munchak, Zimmeresque.

That whole Fitzgerald push has to be Murphy 100% considering he hired him at NW.

What are Fitzies strengths?  O?  D?  Staffing? Would he be a HC game runner and let his coordinators alone?

If you figure out what his strengths are please let me know.  I get that Murphy hired him so there is that connection but I just don't see him as a candidate for one of the best jobs in the NFL.  He is good for NW and that is just where he needs to stay.

Urban Meyer? oh god no.  I am stuck in O$U country and I watch all of their games and I would be hard hell no list for him.  He is another college coach that his offense wouldn't work in the NFL and he doesn't care about defense that much.

I am with Henry on thes two coaches (and college coaches overall) that they need to stay in college where they belong.

Urban Meyer was highly successful in college because he could recruit and he had the best resources available to him most of his career.  He won’t have those advantages in the pros which I think would really hamper his ability to win.

We saw it with Kelly and Spurrier and Petrino as well.
