I want Jennings back for a number of reasons: 1) Cobb's great, Jennings is still better. 2) Why not continue to give Arod the best receiver corps in the NFL? 3) Jennings and Arod have great chemistry, especially in important games. 4) We may think we have an overabundance of talent at WR but look at the injuries this year.

Can some of you numbers people figure out how it can get done and still pay Arod, Mathews and Raji?

I have no idea what anyone makes but we are probably losing Wood, Driver, Saturday, and hopefully Hawk. Does that do it?

The only real way to do it is to franchise him which pisses him off and isn't the Packers way of doing things, but I say tough cookies. If ever a guy was made for a 1 year franchise tag it's Jennings. A long term extension is going to be much too expensive when the bonus money is factored in.

You could also cut Finley and use that money for Jennings. My guess is they'd rather have Finley because he serves a different role in the offense and there's no one else who can do what he does. With Jennings you have Cobb who isn't quite as good at some of the things Greg can do but is better at others. There's no other TE on the roster who can do what Finley can when he's playing at his best.
His best game this season came at the same time when Cobb was out. He played the same slot position Cobb did and excelled. MM said post game it was good to see GJ back in the slot position.

The problem is you have 2 WR's who play that same position. Except one is in his early 20's, has more upside, and comes a lot cheaper.

Jennings could be utilized in other ways but then you're taking away positions/time played that James Jones has been terrific in and there again. A little younger and also much cheaper.

We know what a healthy Jordy is like. And while it was a very small sampling, at least as a returner Ross looked very good.

Beyond $, I just don't know that in 2013 there is a place for him here. I'd love to see him back but I don't see TT franchising him and you know some team like the Vikings, Redskins, Bills, or Cryboys will pay way more then TT is willing to.

I think either Raji or Jennings has to go

In Cobb, you have Jennings younger, cheaper replacement and you lose essentially nothing. As long as Cobb stays healthy he has every bit the upside to be as good as Jennings if not better in some areas (e.g. used out of the backfield).

In Raji, there is no one to replace him. He's not expendable. He needs to be extended.

...so long as no one gets hurt. If we're talking about a one year deal the routes aren't even close for Cobb (or almost anyone else in the NFL). Cobb gets open cause he's good at reading Rodger's mind. Greg gets open cause he's technical with his routes. Greg can play inside and outside and the deeper you are at WR the more you can put pressure on the defense not just in scheme but in effort and high quality reps.

I think how good the defenses are in the NFC needs to be factored in as well. SF and SEA have young, talented defenses. This team is in a Superbowl push window right now and you need as much talent as possible to create problems for those defenses.

That said I think 85 is 100% gone next year.
It's been a luxury to have 4 WR's as good as Jennings, Nelson, Jones and Cobb. With a hard cap, you can't pay a premium for such luxuries, which is what paying Jennings would be. Raji, CMIII and the other FA's coming up are not luxuries, they are every down players that are impossible to replace in the short term. Jennings, on the other hand, is replaceable, as we saw this year. We are better with Jennings, but not enough to warrant the money he wants.
Man, I sure do miss cpheph1.

I think there's too much risk, from a potential injury viewpoint, to franchise him.
I don't know the tag # for WRs, but I'm guessing it's in the $12M neighborhood? That would be an awful big hit if he were to have another season like this one.

Generally speaking, TT's M.O. is to go for 2-year deals in similar circumstances, and if a deal could be worked out, I'd expect it to be just that.

You'll still need a better mind than mine, Hud, to get your real answer, but it's also possible that a bump in next year's cap could offer some release. The only thing I've seen so far read that it wasn't expected to be a significant increase, but another $1-2M availability could be the difference.

Yeah, but that whole article was strictly in the context of the playoffs. He was talking only about where he'd rather play in the postseason.

As for the OP, I think they franchise him, and then see if they can work out something longer term or get a good offer on a trade. He's worth the franchise tag for a year even if we don't extend him or trade him.

There's no doubt the offense takes a step back losing a player like Greg Jennings. It's a calculated risk though when you consider the other players at the position. You can only spend so much money at one position.
If there's a way for TT to sign Jennings. He will. If it's not possible, I'm not sure the next guy isn't already on the team in Jeremy Ross. The kid can play.

AR has told plenty of stories of Jeremy Ross calling him and asking to spend time going over film, talking about routes, playing WR, D recognition, everything.

I think Ross is another TT star in the making.
I want Jennings back terribly. His YAC is incredible, and it definitely showed last week. He still has the potential to be a big threat and our No. 1 receiver next season if we kept him.

That being said, I think the only way we keep him is if Jennings agrees to less money. I would love to see the Packers throw him the cash (goodbye Finley), but I think they are satisfied with their receivers without Jennings and the $$ it would cost.
