It would have to be someone who runs a 3-4.  We got too much invested in edge rushers to consider going to a 4-3. I don’t follow the league enough to know who that would be.

That said, what is Pettine doing or not doing that makes you think a coaching change is needed?

I would think that if there's a change, it's because LaFleur thinks Pettine isn't getting it done and he wasn't MLF's choice, as mentioned above.

I listen to the fan and sentiment there is that mlf is not a huge fan of abm- I like Jim Leonard buy not sure...back to abm- some very subtle stuff with how mlf never really praises the defense or compliments the defense game plan or coaches? I don’t really see that but it was boredom scuttlebutt I am sure.

I noticed that too particularly when he had to light a fire under their butts at half time. Absent a Super Bowl appearance or victory, I think ABM is gone especially if the defense lets us down like they did last year.

Seriously.....I said it all week long -- stop the run & make Jimmy Cousins beat you. ABM seemed to refuse to even consider the run even when they were getting gashed. Disgusting display of run defense.

The other side is Shanarat knows the entire Packer coaching staff. Probably knew exactly what they were going to do & when. That's a problem MLF is going to have to overcome. Their (Niners) coaching staff has WAYYY too much familiarity with the Packers.

I really don’t think this applies anymore. Every DC runs variations of 3/4 and 4/3. I would say your “defensive“ scheme is more about roster building than alignment these day.

Starting with second half of Saints game, Pettine appeared to change his thinking, at least for that game & Falcons, by going to a run-heavy defense. I'm thinking either / and two factors played into this; 1) Without Clark they couldn't hold up with only 2 interior d-lineman 2) King & Alexander have shown enough that Pettine doesn't feel he needs to help them as much. Going to be interesting to see what he does moving forward.

As I mentioned earlier this year, everyone concerned about SF and right now that’s not even a playoff team.    Take a look at their next 7 games.  Rams twice, at Pats, at Hawks, GB and Buffalo at home and at the Saints?  Heck, they could lose all 7.

Seahags and Rams look like the teams to beat, right now. 49ers are not playing well and I don't think it is because Garapollo is out. I think teams have figured out how to play them and win. Their Defense isn't up to par, either.

Did you watch the Seacocks against the Vikings? Their run D is worse than ours and their OL couldn't keep the heat off Russ. GB would throttle them. They remind me of the 2014 Packers...lots of excellent QB play, really good receivers, but major holes that will hold them back from contending.

I am in the minority that ABM isn't going anywhere.  The defense is missing its main cog in Clark and still hasn't found anything at ILB.  I think he will still be there going in to next year.  But, if he doesn't stop the run next year then I think he could be gone.

Looking at their record. 5-0 is pretty good. Yeah they have a porous O Line and their run Defense isn't great, but they are 5-0 and at the top of their division. So, in that regard, they are the team to beat.

I know the stats are not great, but I just don't have many complaints about him.  This coming from a guy who typically doesn't have a lot of love for coaches.

We're not seeing broken coverage or mental mistakes, we're not seeing a ton of penalties, we're not seeing horrible play calls, and  over the past 2 years they have closed out a lot of games.

The one complaint I have is overuse of exotic stuff on early downs.   In his defense, when you have shit for talent at DL and ILB, why not get creative?    He's gone away from it recently and with good results, so will see what he does going forward.

I am encouraged by Pettine adjusting starting after halftime of the Saints game and through the Falcons game, with a D plan that stifles the run better than his old look. If he isn't playing for his job, he ought to be, as the poster above who says MLF is building enough credibility as a coach to make a change after this season if things go south is, I think, seeing it correctly.

Disagree on nothing at ILB. Barnes and watch for Kamal once he's back. I think those two will be serviceable. Summers, maybe. Burks forget it. Kirksey, no.

I think they're good, I just don't think they're the class of the NFC. I don't think GB would have less of an issue with Seattle than they did with NO. Right now GB is the team to beat in the NFC and the AFC is kind of a question mark as the Mahomes Show got throttle by Vegas who had previously throttled Baltimore. Until someone steps up and shows they can slow down Aaron Rodgers savvy, Aaron Jones effort/speed, and MLF's game planning then GB is the top dawg. Maybe that happens this week with TB's defense, but right now GB is #1 in the league IMO.
