A big reason for the improvement in recruitment rankings at UW has been Jimmy L.  I mean, he has instant credibility with recruits.  Unheralded guy coming out of HS that came on the scene and became an All-Big Ten performer then went on to have a solid NFL career and is arguably one of the best assistant coaches in D1.

Still, I’m not that concerned about the Badgers recruiting efforts although Jon Budmayr also left the program and he was instrumental in landing top rated QBs like Graham Mertz and Deacon Hill.

The cupboard won’t be completely empty though if JL joins GB.  Joe Rudolph is as good as any recruiter in the country for OL and DL.  Bob Bostad returning to the Badgers to coach LBs has also been a godsend as he also has knack for finding really good prospects and also has the background of coaching the best OL in Badgers history 10-15 years ago.  John Settle has done a nice job with RBs and Mickey Turner is becoming one of the better recruiters in the country especially on the East Coast.

I’ll say this though, what Wisconsin has going for them is a 20 year history of producing very good OL and RB and TE and LB that have been drafted and some have performed very well in the pros.   They also showcase a pro style offense which tends to translate well to the pros.

So the bottom line is if Leonhard did want to join the Packers I don’t think the program will collapse like a house of cards.  If you look at defensive coordinators previous to Jimmy L they did fairly well and parlayed their success into promotions.

Personally, I’d be surprised if Leonhard didn’t take the GB job as it seems like a perfect fit.  But like Giannis with Milwaukee, he may not always jump at something bigger or better.

His official bio mentions Dom!

Before joining the Rams, Evero spent the 2016 season as the Green Bay Packers' defensive quality control coach after spending five years on the San Francisco 49ers' coaching staff.

While at Green Bay, Evero worked closely with defensive coordinator Dom Capers and was responsible for breaking down opponent game film and analyzing their offensive tendencies, playbook development, compiling team and player reports, and coordinating the opponent scout teams the starting defense will face at practice. In 2016, Evero was a part of a Green Bay team that finished the year on a six-game winning streak, earning them a playoff in the NFC Wild Card game. It marked the team's longest winning streak to end the season since a nine-game streak in 1941. Defensively, Evero helped contribute to the team's top-10 league rankings in interceptions (fourth, tied), sacks (sixth, tied) and rush defense (eighth).

There’s another angle to consider as well.

I’ve mentioned the fucked up wonky leadership structure in GB, and it’s possible that Leonhard was turned off by it given how coaches exist within the reporting structure.  I mean, it’s pretty stupid.  In just about any other normal situation, the coaches report up through the GM or some VP of personnel.  Not in GB.  It’s right to MM.  Then there’s Russ Ball lurking in the background having full control over everything except coaches and personnel decisions.  This structure is bound to create internal dysfunction as we’ve already seen with McCarthy and Thompson’s health and retaining Pettine and the debacle of special teams coaches.

The defensive scheme the Rams played last year is very close to what Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio ran in San Francisco and Chicago and it may be what LaFleur wants to run. Evero learned the system last year under coordinator Brandon Staley, who left to become the Los Angeles Chargers head coach last month

More speculation from JSonline.  I think it's Silverstein bullshit.

Another thing possibly working against LaFleur is the way he seemed to blame Pettine for the botched call at the end of the first half in the NFC championship game against Tampa Bay. Sources said Pettine was told to play man coverage instead of zone and another source said Pettine misunderstood LaFleur.

Either way, LaFleur had a timeout left and could have stopped play before Brady threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Scotty Miller.

LaFleur blamed himself in his season-ending news conference, but the impression after the game was that he was laying blame at Pettine’s feet and Leonhard may not feel good about that given his friendship with Pettine.

So the question that comes to my mind is why didn't the Rams promote this dude to DC?

I don’t think there’s something about GB that turned Leonhard off like money or uncertainty, I think he’s just good at UW. He gets paid well, they have success, and he’s well liked. Hard situation to walk away from considering the demands and expectations of an nfl coordinator.

Probably interviewed to see if it was a perfect fit for him. Must have felt it was not. I bet he is a power five conference head coach in 2022

I'm curious as to how much Leonhard plays into the recruiting process.  UDub could throw some serious cash his way.

Still the proverbial home town boy becoming DC for the Packers would be hard to pass up.  I gotta think even Barry and Chryst would understand that.

As Bongwater stated, HC at Wisconsin isn't going to be available any time soon.

Per a friend of mine in college athletics...

Everyone, including the Alabamas and Clemsons of the world, are having to tighten belts. "Available cash," is going to be a bigger issue for colleges this year than pro leagues.

Additionally, Alvarez has been known to, on general principle, draw a line in the sand financially for things.

IMO, IF the job is offered to Leonhard he will turn it down for one of two reasons...1)Team Penny-Pincher didn't think he was worth Pettine money or 2)He is truly happy doing what he is doing.

But I will say this...IF it is true he turned down the Rams DC job last year, and he EVER wants to work in the NFL as a coordinator, he will accept the Packers DC job. If a guy turns down his first ever NFL offer, a second one seldom comes. You get a reputation that's hard to live down.
