You just wait....in 2022 5th round Gutey will draft a Hall of Fame LB'er
@BrainDed posted:I'm willing to give Murphy some slack because he gave us MLF.
Strike 1 was not allowing MLF to hire his special teams guy.
If he doesn't allow MLF to move on from Pettine, then we move directly to strike 3.
This is where MLF has some currency now.
Time to put pressure on that big eared Mother fucker -- Gutey should be making these decisions anyway not the guy from the cover of Mad magazine.
Yes the Packers lack SOME (key word here) talent on defense but they also HAVE talent & it's not being used correctly. A coaches job is to put the players in a position to succeed -- yeah even if they suck & having a guy like Preston Smith play out on the edge like a CB is unconscionable.
MLF can easily go to Gutey & tell him he isn't happy with the defense & would like to make a change (if that's what he wanted to do). This sitting here "status quo" as Rodgers turns as old as my 99 year old Grandmother is insanity.
Is anyone going to point out that Mark Zimner has minimal talent on defense aside from a couple really good ILB and worked over GB far more than Pettine worked over MIN with 3 Pro Bowlers on the line (KC, Smiths), a Pro Bowl CB, and a collection of other talent? Not sure how that happens...
Probably a combo of Pettine not being all that great, and that having really good ILBs makes a significant difference.
As we sit today:
Total defense: Packers rank 11th
Scoring defense: 20th 26.7 ppg
Passing Defense: 13th 227.6 yards per game
Rushing defense: 15th **119.0 yards per game
**the main reason GB is not lower then 15th is the Packers O was getting ahead in games (>2 scores) where opposing offenses have no choice but to abandon the run.
I understand there are holes at ILB and the interior DL but defensive coordinators with vastly less talent have produced better results then the above.
The seat under Pettine should be understandably quite hot.
I honestly think the entire team was looking past min to SF. Not an excuse, more of a reason to dump on them.
@Boris posted:Packers offense is already explosive with all of their preferred starters on the field. (Missing Bakhtiari, A Jones & Lazard) - we saw it in the first 4 games. Pretty regularly.
Mehhhh...they played crap defenses. I'd say their offense has been explosive vs lesser teams. And I don't consistently having all preferred starters on the field on a regular basis is very likely.

Or how they limited 17 with a bunch of tomato cans. Did they play zone and just flood all the throwing lanes? I wasn't able/didn't care to go back and look.
22 film review apparently showed Adams triple and at least twice, quadruple covered. That no one else...MVS? EQ? could get open at the WR position is flat out embarrassing.
For the love of God, Adams multiple times was being trailed by an ILB and all the Vikings had left were 8th graders playing CB.
@Timpranillo posted:Crazy how drafting a stud WR in the 2nd round can turn an offense from good to explosive huh?
Davante Adams was a second-round pick, right?
Yes, yes it does include min. We'll see how their D fares the rest of the season.

Jones would have really helped yesterday. Williams is steady but just can't break into the open field for big plays.
The Green Bay Packers’ defense is good at one thing, at least. Burning money.
According to OverTheCap.com, the Packers are spending $116.6 million on their defense this season.
That’s the fourth-most expensive defense in the NFL. They paid through the teeth to add Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Adrian Amos. They opened the vault to extend Kenny Clark. In the five drafts from 2015 through 2019, 13 of the 15 selections used in the first three rounds went to defensive players.

Yes, but 1990s Reggie White is not available.
"None of Kirk Cousins’ 11 completions traveled longer than than 10 yards in the air, yet on a windy day, the Packers safeties played deep and the cornerbacks gave up underneath throws without much resistance."
Here's the deal with Pettine. His calls and game strategy have to come under scrutiny....Playing on an extremely windy day, against a team whose QB is leading the league in interceptions, and who have a stud RB, and Pettine decides to play deep umbrella coverage with light fronts. Brilliant
Like I always say , "Rex Ryans Lackey". Guy held the clipboard while Rex was the mastermind of the Ravens, Jets, Bills, etc....when Pettine went off on his own (Cleveland and Green Bay).....FAIL
Gute is also complicit. It's been 9 months since the ass ream by San Francisco in the NFC Championship game. Raheem Mostert has a record setting day and what do Pettine and Gute do to improve the DL....nothing. Depending on an overworked Kenny Clark along with back-up quality starters in Kyle Lowry and Trevor Lancaster. Hoping that Keke and Montravious come around....is not a winning strategy. And here we are with yet another horrible run defense.
Pretty obvious from the MLF comments after the game that his patience is wearing thin.

No... the kid that had 17 sacks and caused as many fumbles as the Packers defense last year...🤬🤬🤬🤬

He's not even ripping Pettine here. He's ripping the players and Pettine's assistants. Ryan has been kissing Pettine's ass for a couple of years now. He really wants his "protégée" to be the real thing.
I agree. Doesn't say why was he playing a light box with umbrella coverage against that idiot Cousins. Why no halftime adjustments?
The strategy Pettine used on Sunday made no sense with the wind conditions. It makes even less sense when they have a shutdown corner that they can count on to eliminate one side of the field. Teams don't throw at Alexander. The whole point of having a shutdown corner is it frees up your safeties to play closer to the LOS to stop the run and/or shade to the other side of the field or help with backs out of the backfield.

I think the staff may have made the decision that they were only likely to be able to play Jones and Bakh 1 of the 2 games with the short turnaround and decided that it was better to give them another 4 days rest to recover rather than rush them a bit on Sunday.
“My defenses never played like that. And I know, hey I get it, all the cheese in Wisconsin. But that’s Swiss cheese. It stinks and it’s got tons of holes in it."
What a fucking wordsmith he is. There's a reason Captain Vajankle isn't anywhere near a coaching staff.
@fightphoe93 posted:So I don’t know where the radio guys get their stats from but there is 1 that is a concern for the D going forward. Supposedly after 5 games last year, the number of QB pressures by the D was around 140 pressures. This year the number is closer to 70 QB pressures.
If that’s correct, wow that is a huge decline in performance. Let’s hope that gets turned around soon. They need to get some pressures on Watson this week as he does have a number of receivers that can take it the distance.
Preston Smith has been getting some pressures, but little, if any, sacks. Same with Gary. These two need to play better, or be schemed better, by Pettine. You know Zadarious is being double teamed, as is Clark up the middle. We need M. Adams and Lowry to step up, in a big way. Keke, too.
The whole key to this defense, probably any defense, is to win one-on-ones up front. Last night we were able to win some of those and it made all the difference.
They were playing against guys that will be cleaning my car at the car wash this weekend.
Hey congrats you won a couple matchups last night.
This defense is coached like dogshit & while they don't have ultimate talent in all positions, they have enough to be a top 10-16 defense.
I really don't think I'm asking for the moon here. All the Pack needs is a HALFWAY decent defense. They don't need to be 1996 Packers. If they can be just a middle of the road defense, that's all Rodgers needs plus a healthy Aaron Jones & Lazard (Obviously Davante too) Game fucking over!
“When a team says that we’re going to go out and we’re going to punish the Green Bay Packers, we’re going to be more physical than the Green Bay Packers, there is no resistance. Not a little resistance. There is no resistance that they put up to physical football teams up front.” - Ryan Clark
The thing that struck me last night was watching how SF D closed on the ball carrier and made the tackle, vs. GB D. We all know there have been issues with this all season but it was really highlighted during the last night's game.
One example. When GB ran the ball, you'd see holes and certain amount of spacing between D players. When Jones wasn't doing what he does or Ervin was carrying the ball, those voids in the D would close quickly by multiple defenders and then there was almost always more than one guy making the tackle. Same on pass plays. When SF ran the ball, those voids in the GB D didn't close as quickly and it was often one guy making the tackle while the others would kind of hang back. SF D lets you know you're being stopped. They just seem to have better fundamentals.
Packers are not the best tackling team in the NFL. And the seem especially poor at or behind the LOS. Too many times they have offensive players stopped for a loss or no gain only to give up yards. They do, however, seem to lead the league in "almost" sacks.
Some video in defense of Pettine. This is what prompted Rex Ryan to rip on our ILBer coach.
Some really great coordinators turn out to be really shitty head coaches. But they can still be great coordinators. Matt Patricia might/should be available. Any interest there as a possible Pettine replacement?
Matt & Matt?
I'd be okay with Patricia, and would even consider elevating Mike Smith to the DC spot if they moved on from Pettine.
At the risk of being called a homer may I suggest Aranda or Leonhard. Over their years in Madison it seems to me that they have coached up many a hard hitting linebacker, something that has been lacking in GB.

I'd rather go with Leonhard as he was in the NFL and I think that makes a difference. He got to play under defensive coaches like Chuck Pagano, Rex Ryan, Vic Fangio, and Jack Del Rio. Aranda has never been in the NFL as a player or a coach.
Of course, Leonhard played 5 of his 10 years with Mike Pettine as either his DC or Head Coach, so maybe not?
Has MLF?
My point was these 2 seem to have good to great linebacking every year.
I'll throw a couple more names out there from the "I sucked as a HC but was damn good as a Def Coordinator":
If Atlanta goes away from interim HC Raheem Morris, he could be a pretty decent pick up. Atlanta hasn't had the best defenses, but he was pretty good in TB.
Speaking of Atlanta, Dan Quinn is looking for a job and he was pretty solid as a DC.
If the Bears launch Nagy in the way of Fox, Trestman, etc., Chuck Pagano has been pretty good over a couple stints as a DC.
Anthony Lynn could be shown the door in San Diego LA, so that would free up Gus Bradley. Could be a good candidate.
If the Broncos realize the HC mistake in hiring Vic Fangio, his services would be available in a role he's done well in over his career.
I know these are "retread" coaches, the same old guys who are always getting another chance (with the exception of Morris). But as I mentioned in a previous post, some Coordinators are great coordinators but shitty head coaches. Anyway, just my two cents.
I suspect that Matt might prefer a younger coach that he is familiar with. But unless Pettine is promoted to HC somewhere else I suspect that he remains. Still, it’s nice to ponder the options.
