I see we're starting to shit on guys in the second year now.  McVincePlant sniveler squad needs to get crackin'.

Shawn Mennenga was, like......

No, agreed on that one.  Difference being Mennawhogivesashit has shown to be completely incompetent in his first NFL coordinator job (thanks Murphy).  You fail this bad it's time for the Ray Rhodes treatment.  ST are tremendously bad and that's saying a lot considering some ST units in the past.  He makes Zook look like a certifiable guru.  The only guy who hasn't melted down is Crosby.  Opie just fell of the fucking map.

Pettine is still attempting to resurrect this horrible defensive history in Green Bay.  If you're stepping back to take a look, Pettine is making progress along with Gerkin's FA/draft moves.  It also doesn't factor in ST are always scrubs and getting a guy to run a correct assignment or not commit a stupid penalty isn't quite as steep as rebuilding a titanic mess of a defense.

There's a huge hole in the middle of the defense, goes without saying.  Burks contributing nothing is a huge problem which I would assume would be the next issue to address.  Considering Gyoza has already dropped a ton of cash on OLB and S it's going to be a game of patience.  Pettine has still made a lot of chicken salad out of chicken shit.  1 3/4 years in, I'd say it's a significant improvement.  Kind of hard to see why shitting on Pettine in the second year when the team is 8-2 would make any sense.

McVincePlant snivel crew disagrees.  No, Packdog isn't part of the McVincePlant snivel crew.

I don't disagree with most of your post.  But I would say the above is absolutely a factor into why ST is a problem to fix.  Getting a bunch of "scrubs" to run a correct assignment or not commit a stupid penalty is a problem.  They don't seem to have that ST's 'ace' on either side to help things out - the gunner or the return man which is something previous ST Coaches have had.

And I'm not poopin' on any of the coaches. But the big plays the defense gives up is a problem, especially after the FA (and draft) capital spent to fix it (and it's noticeably improved).  Can't really pin this all on the pass liability at the MLB position, can we?

Gyoza

I love Gyoza when Wifey & I go to the sushi restaurant.

I have a feeling Tremon Smith is an OK returner. The ST's needs to get their act together. Hey....maybe we'll get lucky & it'll start on Sunday Night

A good point was made yesterday on sports radio. Between the 2 teams, the 49ers need this game far more then GB based mostly on:

1.) They are at home.

2.) Their remaining games are a murderers row vs GB's.

Likely a reason they will try like hell to have guys like Kittle play even if he's not close to 100 percent. Bakh said on radio he's preparing for a physical, leave everything on the field type battle. Hard to argue with that.

Pettine doesn't get a free pass but yes I would say ILB is the biggest part of the problem.  If Pettine is constantly putting safeties up on the line pick your poison, underneath or over the top, with over the top likely giving up points.

Obviously the ugly stats on big plays, etc point out a problem but I'd rather look at the W-L and how that indicates adapting to the situation as best possible and producing the best outcome.  If some team throws for 500 yards and only scores 17 points I don't give a shit.  This defense is a couple of players away from making everyone stat happy.

Also, I am very aware these weaknesses could be the ticket for an early playoff exit.  So could the lack of WR depth.  Take your pick.  I'm hoping any issues are offensive since a steady D will keep you in the game.

There is no doubt that the middle of the field continues to be a problem for the defense.  I'm certain we'll see examples of that tomorrow night versus the 49ers.

I'm not giving Martinez a pass, but you can't just look at one dude and pin it on him.  There are many factors involved.  While I love the additions of Amos and Savage, they have to do a better job covering  the middle of the field.  The scheme is obviously an issue as well... Not many linebackers in the NFL can cover Kittle.  Why would anybody, including GB's coaching staff, expect Blake Martinez to be able do it consistently?

This got me thinking a bit about Packer teams of days gone by.  When the mid-90's Packer defense is brought up, most people talk about Reggie, Jones, Butler, etc.  All great players indeed.  But the one guy that rarely gets mentioned is Wayne Simmons.  That dude absolutely destroyed opposing TE's and took them out of the game... loved that mean SOB.

Simmons was a heck of a football player but a complete scumbag off the field.  He’d fit in perfectly with Ray Rice and Tyreke Hill.

It is pretty amazing that we still talk about him 25 years later.  There have been a lot of players and wasted draft picks on LBs over the years.  By pure chance or law of averages you would have thought GB could have found a decent inside backer since then.

Having a roaming, athletic safety cover the middle of the field can’t hurt but we’re still waiting for Nick Collins replacement as well.   Savage has the physical tools to be that kind of player so hope it all translates eventually.  He’s faded a bit since an encouraging start to the season.

Did I miss something last offseason? Did Murph hire Mennenga? Pretty Boy has done a great job (so far) but it's OK to bust his chops on some things.

Agree 100%.  28th in yards, 14th in points.  I've always wondered why yards is the default category when we talk about defensive rankings.

Yes, you did miss something.  Murphy didn't want to pony up for one of the best ST coaches in the league, a guy Mayo wanted.  They ended up with that other guy who came from Vanderbilt or some shit.

Pay attention clown school.

Here's Murphy's response to the media reports of his meddling in staffing decisions. What isn't addressed in his denial is if any financial constraints were placed upon the hires (that was the primary accusation as I remember it).

Thank you, I did miss that somehow. That is ridiculous…

EDIT: Ridiculous but maybe a good thing when it is all said and done. Maybe Murph  will learn to stay in his lane. Would I bet that he does? No…

Kittle, Samuels and Sanders are all going to suit up. I don’t think that we can overcome that. But if we can out score them then we have a good chance for an upset win.

Pretty sure if we can out score them there's a 100% chance for an upset win.

Or Russ Ball, whoever was fucking that deal up.  The guy comes, states he wants 3 mil, they shoot back some stupid offer, he walks.

Flashback to Dec 31, 2017.

A friend of mine had an extra ticket for SF @ LA Rams game. That was year Jimmy G was traded to 4ers mid season and I wanted to get a look at him and Jared Goff.  McVay rested his starters and they were one and done nest week in playoffs...stooopid.

Anyways I remember impressed with JG's arm and presence in a new offense so I looked up his stats. 20/33 for 292yds, 2 TDS and 2 INTs vs backups. Not as impressive as I recalled.

JG doesn't seem to have improved that much since then (shaky in crunch time vs Seahags) so I'm looking for steady pressure on him to create some INTs for Packer secondary today. Let 'er rip!

That alone was bad enough but then they come back with J/K bro, we will pay you what you were looking for.

That's some bush league bullshit there.
