the more I examine this signing the more I like it. Saturday graded out at 14.2 on PPF, just 4 points behind Wells, good for fifth among all centers. He's terrific in pass protection, giving up only 2 sacks all last season.

One way to look at this signing is the price paid for Nick McDonald not working out. The team did have a replacement for Wells in mind that they were developing, but he didn't work out. The lack of an offseason may have contributed to that. Anyway, Saturday is not the worst stopgap - we can draft a center in the mid or late rounds to develop.

Saturday also made audible and line calls in Indianapolis even with Manning shifting plays at the line. He's likely a small step back in blocking but they shouldn't lose a step in protection calls to help avoid free runs at Rodgers.

I am really interested to see the 2 contracts now. (BTW, did anyone release the $$ details for Wells.) Wells' contract is obviously longer, but I am interested in the delta. It will be a rare insight into how much TT values bringing in a 38 year old elite center to replace a 33 year old elite center.
in all this draft a center talk, don't forget Sampson Genus is already on the team. who knows, after OTAs and training camp....

That kind of money is what they were rumored to be offering Wells (about 4 million), sounds like Thompson values elite 30+ Centers in that price range. It's a good deal though, Saturday may not physically be what he used to be, but he is probably there aren't many other Centers I would trust to make all the right line calls. This not only allows us to draft a replacement and let him sit for a year or two, but it protects us in case we miss out on one of the top Center prospects.
If Konz isn't an option, I think they look towards Michigan C David Molk. He just seems like the kind of OL Thompson drafts. He has that kind of nasty, mix it up attitude that seems to be a common thread with the OL they draft. On field attitude and demeanor were two of the most frequently mentioned qualities with both Josh Sitton and TJ Lang, Molk seems like he fits right in with those two.

This is a great, great move by Ted! I've always liked Saturday (moreso when Lord Peyton started yelling at him, and Jeff didn't back down). Five time Pro Bowler, two time All Pro...he's a winner, and will solidify the line. Two years $3.5-4 million per with an opt out for the second season....pretty cheap for what we're getting. More importantly, his signing means we can go nuts drafting defense in the draft, and go after a center in the third round. Whoever we get, he'll be able to learn from one of the greats in the game.

I say Saturday has the better shot to win a ring this season. Unfortunately, as good as Manning has been, and has the potential to be, cleared by doctors or not, we are talking about his neck, and I think he gets hurt and doesn't last the season. As far as "coach" Payton goes, may he never coach another snap in this league!
Sounds like a McCarthy-influenced move. He talked about their multi-scheme offense and how important Wells was to facilitating the calls for that offense. Saturday at least has experience with the complexities that Manning's offense consisted of, so perhaps there's less of a curve.
