They went into Seattle and got beat 29-3 against a divisional opponent they know very well
Seahawks rushed for 175 yards and 2 TDs that day and Seattle didn't even have Harvin on the field. Yet somehow Vic Fangio still has a job....and he had 2 All Pro ILBs in Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman on the field that day....

This post somehow perfectly captures the misunderstanding around this Packer defense.

There is an enormous difference between an elite squad having a bad day and bad squad having a bad day…You can't equate the two simply because they both had the same result in a single instance.

Vic Fangio has a job because he has put together an elite defense. The fact that the 49ers, or any team for that matter, has occasionally had similar results with a common opponent doesn't mean Capers is just as good as these guys.

I understand that after every game there will be some overreaction to what was just seen. I think we're seeing it right now with the Packer offense. Did the offense have a good game last night? Not at all. But they are still pretty damn good and have the track record to back it up.

The defense has no such track record, unless you count the 2010 season. What people are complaining about for this defense isn't just about last night's performance. It's about the repeated awful performances over the past three years…the record setting performance in the 15-1 year; the awful playoff game against the Giants, the unreal performance by Peterson and Kapaernick against this team when it mattered most, the 8+ minute drives they routinely gave up in the 4th quarter last year and again last night.

This is a common thread and there's nothing knee jerk about it and there's no sense in excusing it b/c a really good defense may also have a bad day once in while.

Go Packers and enjoy the season in any manner that makes you happy

There's rumors a plenty in Packerland that he was actually fired. Take that for what it's worth, which admittedly ain't a whole lot.

He resigned.... instead of being fired. Didn't think much of Moss' work with the ILBs (rumor).

Wonder if McCarthy would like to have his fire working with the LBs instead of whatever Moss brings.

If I could impersonate TT and I had access to Hawk and Jones cell numbers I'm certain Iast night I would have tried to tell both of them the team was staying an extra day in Seattle and to meet up at the Space Needle at 7am this morning.

I'm off the ledge now.

Satan, I dig your knowledge. Football acumen. And deep seated faith in the Packers.

But  here's the thing I can't get past. Once Seattle figured out GB had zero answer to the read option they knew they could run that at will anytime they wanted. How does a Dom Capers led defense that has been scorched in the past look like they had absolutely no idea where the assignments were. Seattle let up once they clipped 200 rushing yards. That was incredibly tough to watch. Again.

Did GB prep for this game with Cobb at QB and run a read option with Lacy to see if everyone knew assignments? If not then why not?

It does concern me that MM felt the team was prepared for last night. Because what I saw didn't look like a prepared team.

Im hoping that's MM feeding the media a canned presser and he tore everyone a new one.

Its one game. They know the delta between where they are and where they need to be. But for the first time in a long time I don't know if the gap is player or coaching related.

I do expect Geno Smith to run a crap load of read option next Sunday though.

And the Packers will likely bitch slap him around and Packers fan will think "oh good, they got it fixed!"

Hopefully, most true Packer fans understand that Geno Smith is not Russell Wilson, and that Chris Ivory or Chris Johnson are not Marshawn Lynch. Also, I doubt we see Eric Decker running any of those jet sweeps.

Richard Sherman confronted Aaron Rodgers after Thursday's game

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

On our Thursday Night Live pregame fantasy show -- you can watch every week right here! -- we had a caller ring in and ask if we thought Richard Sherman would get in "an altercation" on Thursday night. No idea how many points he gets for altercations in his IDP league, but we didn't expect anything NFC Championship Game-level serious out of Sherman.

And we didn't get much of anything, really, except for Sherman -- who wasn't tested a single time in Seattle's 36-16 beatdown win -- going up to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers after the game.

As The Big Lead notes, Sherman has a question for Rodgers. The Seahawks cornerback has his back turned, but it appears he asked Rodgers a simple question:

"You avoided me didn't you?"

Rodgers had a simpler answer.

"Yup."

At least give Rodgers credit for being honest? The Packers' game plan -- completely different from 2012's approach -- was to throw Jarrett Boykin to the dogs and put him on Sherman's side. The idea is you nullify the defense's best weapon.

The problem is by doing that, you cut the field in half. So in effect the Packers schemed right into the Seahawks' plan.

When the Packers put Jordy Nelson against Sherman in 2012 (primarily, anyway) Nelson was completely washed out. He was productive Thursday, but it's difficult to open up your offense when you limit the quarterback's options to half the field by not throwing at one guy the entire game.

Refusing to test Sherman tells you exactly how the Packers -- and the rest of the NFL -- feel about the Seahawks corner. Rodgers' acknowledgment should tell you even more.

That's bull$hit. Sherman isn't Night Train Lane or Deion for god sakes.

MM's "plan" to not put Jordy over there at least SOME of the time is stupid. Even with Boykin, at least throw the guys way, even if it's over his head. Completely Stupid.....unless.

Think they (Packers) were saving something in case they meet later? If so, that's stupid too

If Rodgers had the skills of  a Blaine Gabbert or he's some rookie like Teddy Bridgewater maybe I buy this plan. But you are talking about one of the most accurate passers in the NFL.

Playing scared doesn't work son. And that's pretty much the message MM sent to the Hags.

I was thinking last night about how Favre/Holmgren were never afraid to attack Sanders. What comes to mind in particular is the 1997 game at Lambeau. Favre threw an INT to Sanders near the end of the first half that briefly gave them the lead (score was 10-10 at the half). In the second half of the game, they kept attacking him, end result? Packers win the game 45-17. We have a guy who is even better than Favre was during his 3x MVP streak peak, and McCarthy had a gameplan indicating they were terrified of a single player, throwing away half the field, effectively.

From the video, I don't think Rodgers liked the game plan, or Sherman, much either. Of course, since he's the guy with the ball in his hand, a ring on his finger, and as one of the best in the game, I wonder why he didn't change some things at the LOS.

With a player like Sherman you need to pick your spots carefully, but I don't care for that strategy and it doesn't keep the defense honest. That probably contributed to AR missing a wide-open Adams on that side for a likely TD.

I think the crowd noise significantly limits how much you can change at the LOS at Seattle.

This will be MM's undoing.  Hanging onto worthless coaches.  Inevitability.

Will be playing more Clash of the Clans until our defense shows they are upgraded like my level 5 Wizards.  Sherrod and Co will be fine once they leave Seattle.

BTW, our schedule just got a lot easier the rest of the year.

Can we build 'Healing Potions'?

after closer examination, here are some other possibilities from Sherman lip reading...

man fedya is annoying.

do we agree on a definition of talent?

do you like big butts and cannot lie?

AJ Hawk sucks.

I can't calculate the square root of a number ending in 3 can I?  At least it can never be a perfect square.

does McCarthy always have that stupid face?

Sherman wasn't doing much talking before the game, he was genuinely worried. Little did he know how much "respect" MM had for him.

I'm so effin pissed Jordy or Cobb didn't line up on Sherman & torch his ass. Eff you MM!

MM may not have designed plays to go to Sherman's side of the field, but Rodgers didn't test him either.  AT the end of the play, Rodgers is the guy throwing the ball.  He has the ability to audible/change play at line of scrimmage.  He ALSO chose not to throw at Sherman.
