For what its worth...Named PFF all roolie team for the first quarter of the season.

Through four games, Barnes ranks second on the team in total tackles with 25. He also has three pressures as a blitzer, per PFF, and he nearly intercepted Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan on Monday night.

Barnes and Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen – who was on the board when the Packers took Jordan Love in the first round of April’s draft – were the two All-Rookie linebackers. No other Packers rookie made PFF’s team.

“I think we first took notice of Krys in the spring just during our virtual meetings, our virtual off-season, that he was, we tested those guys routinely,” Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said. “Not only did he pick it up and know it, but he also could process it very quickly in a way that a lot of the tests that we give you get more points for getting the answer faster. He was a guy who we knew had a pretty good football aptitude and then you never know until you get them on the field, but here’s a guy who has shown to be very instinctive, communicates well.”

High praise from Z

Undrafted rookie inside linebacker Krys Barnes has had a heck of a first month of the regular season. He was signed to the 53-man active roster the day of the practice before the season opener in Minnesota, and then started against the Vikings. Three weeks later, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine entrusted Barnes with the “green dot,” meaning he was calling the plays when he was on the field against the Falcons.

Ty Summers had that duty in New Orleans after starter Christian Kirksey injured a pectoral muscle.

“I feel like it’s trust, man,” outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith said of Barnes being given that duty. “When one guy goes down, we’ve got to depend on the next guy to come in and set the tone for us in the middle because he’s the one with the mic and he’s the one that’s making the call. I feel like he did a good job. There were one or two situations where we possibly got a call in late but, man, for him, man, undrafted, to come in and do what he did, he’s going to be good for us, I can tell you that much.”

Before exiting with a shoulder injury, Barnes made six tackles on 38 snaps.

Yeah, it's nice that Barnes is a pleasant surprise. But Patrick Queen is an early (very) defensive rookie of the year candidate. Gute passed on him for no good reason.  With every passing week, his decision to take a QB in the first round, on the cusp of a season with Super Bowl potential, looks worse and worse.

So here's an article from Bill Huber at SI making the same point I had made, albeit more cogently and with some stats to back him up. My apologies in advance to the Packers fans around here who are not interested in criticizing Gute's last draft or roster-building while the Packers have a winning record.

You mean why wouldn’t people freak out over a roster that is 18-5 over the last 2 years? You are what your record says you are that’s why. The All Time Packer Fan Poopy Diaper Team is a who’s who of all stars that this genius base would have drafted...highlights include Patrick Queen, TJ Watt, Roddy White, Vernon Davis, and many more that I can’t think of at the moment.

Apology accepted.

Times Four is a very good place for snark, sneering observations, sarcastic put-downs, and demolition of straw-man arguments (i.e. "why wouldn't people freak out").  It's not so good for those who are interested in an exchange of views on the Packers, especially if one expresses a view not collectively endorsed by the 20 or so regulars who dominate the board. Which is why I so rarely visit this site and even more rarely post here.

Don't be a pussy and you'll be fine.  Make your point.  You don't see BrainDed complaining and he pisses everyone off.  I love it.

I agree with your point.  Further more, using "we're 18-5" is weak sauce.  GD knows it, he's just a big fluffy snowflake.

I always love the extremes.  Seems to be way things are right now.

Yes the record matters.  But just like the Bucks, the record doesn’t mean shit if you can’t get over in the playoffs.

I’m not even suggesting they have to win it all for the season to be a success.  Win a divisional round game and a conference championship game once in a while.

It’s not a complete team and we all know it.  They have some blind spots - namely no decent receiver other than Adams, no decent ILB, and a pass rush that has been suspect at times.  I also don’t think this team has an aggressive or tough mindset.  If they get punched in the mouth they have a tendency to fold.

The good news is they are competitive.  The bad news is I’m not sure that’s good enough come playoff time.

I would consider myself “one of the 20” and I don’t t agree with any of those asshats.

You either.

What an absolute load of shit dude. You did some snarky fishing for an argument and you got a snarky answer. You don’t want an honest discussion, you just want people to agree with you. We all want that. Don’t be a whiner when people don’t agree with you though, it’s fine, it’s the internet. You’re telling me GB was wrong for not drafting Patrick Queen, an opinion shared by most of this site, me included. I’m telling you that the constant whining about not drafting Patrick Queen or TJ Watt or anyone else is dumb. You don’t get to 18-5 by doing a shitty job roster building. It’s not been perfect, but it’s not been bad.

If you think there’s some major malfunction or inequity on this site then private message one of the 3 fucking owners and we can hash it out. Plenty of other posters have done that and I feel like we’ve gotten on the same page. This shit doesn’t need to derail threads.

I've been in the message board game for a long time.   Ran a Brewers site for several years that was pretty popular before I got tired of policing it.

People can typically be grouped into a couple categories.

White Knights
These people are here to defend their heroes honor at all costs.   No matter the evidence, they will always support and find excuses for the coach or popular player.    On this board, it's the guys who loved the AJ Hawk contract extensions and defended McCarthy to the bitter end.

Instigators
They are not trolls, but they flirt with the idea because they understand that this is not real life.   They're not afraid to voice unpopular opinions because they don't care if they are proven wrong on the internet and some white knight links to their post from 2013.   They are on the web to have a little fun and burn a little time talking about a topic they like.  These are the people that make the message boards worth while.   Without them, you have an echo chamber of White Knights and Trolls egging them on.

Analysts
The fanatics who just can't get enough and are willing to sift through all the bullshit from the White Knights and Trolls just to get that one spec of data or theory that they have yet to uncover from the 100's of articles they have already read on the topic.   Everyone thinks they are in this group, but very few are.

Trolls
The Jaymo's of the world  comes in to the board and gets enjoyment by getting the White Knights all emotional over the internet.    The white knights can't comprehend that the troll will say anything just to get a rise out of them.    They take the bait every single fucking time.   The Troll laughs with joy as he has successfully frustrated strangers on the internet.

And Oren Burks, 3rd round pick, is passed on the depth chart by Ty Summers, a 7th rounder 2 drafts ago, and now an undrafted rookie.

Getting kinda hard to look past the failures of the Gutekunst draft resume...

I like our coach,  but I am definitely not sold on Gute. I wasn't before this draft and certainly not after. It was just a bizarre draft. I'll never get it. I'm hoping the defense gets stronger as the year goes on but I just can't believe what we went into the season with in terms of talent at the DT and ILB positions.

The thing that bothers me isn't so much that there wouldn't be an emphasis at certain positions but rather he just completely abandons those positions like they have zero impact.

Let's throw a bunch of shit at wall with mid and low round WR picks.  That didn't work?  Let's sign frickin' Funchess.

They don't have to be big signings.  I liked the Kirksey move but one injury prone guy doesn't cover two spots and depth.

So many said Aaron Rodgers was the only reason the team stayed competitive for years, but now recently have said he's in decline. So either Rodgers isn't in decline and is the only reason we're competitive or Gute/MLF's program is working in spite of their declining QB.

Time will tell I guess. Rodgers has been outstanding in all but one game. In the bad game he had, we were annihilated and embarrassed.

Yeah, everybody thinks I'm a crank, but I'm still intent on proving that I'm right and you're all wrong.

The team has spent a crapload of draft capital on certain positions. DL/DE in particular over last 10 years.

Gary was R1 in 2019, Adams was R3 in 2017, Clark R1 and Fackrell R3 in 2016, Thornton R3 in 2014, D Jones R1 in 2013,  N Perry R1 and Worthy R2 in 2012, M Neal R2 in 2010.

Outside of Clark and Perry that’s a brutal return on your investment.

Defensive backs might be worse.  Randall, Clinton Dix, Josh Jones, Quentin Rollins, Josh Jackson were all R1 or R2.  Jaire Alexander looks the part.  Maybe Darnell Savage figures it out but the hit rate is awful on DBs.

What’s shocking is how little they have invested in the LB and WR positions high in the draft.   Thankfully they hit on Cobb and Davante but not a lot of high draft picks spent on those positions the last 10 years.

Agreed, it can’t be both though. 18-5 didn’t happen by accident. I’m not saying there haven’t been missed opportunities in the draft, I seriously doubt there’s ANYONE who would rather have Jordan Love than Patrick Queen right now. Maybe in 5 years we’re signing a different tune, which is fine too, it’s possible to be right from both perspectives. 18-5 is a hard record to ignore though. You can call the drafting absolute shit, which it may be, but something is working. In the end, what does it really matter? If we win a SB this year, is anyone going to bitch about Patrick Queen? These types of discussions are for retrospectives in February or pre-draft, not after week 6. What if Kamal Martin comes out like a banshee and makes Queen look like a bitch? Is everyone going to pipe up about Gute’s savvy? Fuck no.

Its one thing to say they didn’t get Watt or David, or White, or whoever, but hey, they got “this” guy.

But they don’t have that. Their evaluation process seems to suck- or maybe it’s their gambles are not paying off- because they need talent and depth on defense and it ain’t coming from the draft. If Summers and Barnes are the best they can do, they’re in deep shit...
