Having served as a Board Member for the Boys and Girls Clubs in one of the largest counties in the U.S. and on a public school foundation board whose purpose is to raise funds to plug the shortages left by inadequate government funding, I too am a huge advocate of "teachers."
Teachers today are charged with fulfilling ever-expanding and often conflicting societal expectations, especially since so many parents (or increasingly just the one parent) abdicate their responsibilities vis-a-vis their children.
Teaching should be a cherished and honored profession.
That said, having repeatedly witnessed the unproductive, uncaring, ill-tempered, and, in some cases, outright criminal conduct of a small minority of teachers defended, rationalized, equivocated, and ultimately excused due to the extraordinary powers wielded by unions representing public school teachers in the State of California, I confess to having lost significant respect for the teaching profession.
I refer those doubting the truth of the statement above to the following article from the San Jose Mercury News and editorial from the Los Angeles Times, two newspapers known for their solidly "progressive" takes on the issues of the day:

PS YA you are my favorite poster on this board and I have no doubt you are one of the best teachers in Kern County.
