@Wojespn: The NBA has suspended the season.

@KaplanSportsBiz: “The NBA is suspending game play following the conclusion of tonight’s schedule of games until further notice. The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic. “

Details to follow I am sure.

Adam Silver gets major props for this in my opinion. Whether they suspend it for a week or 6 weeks, it's the right thing to do until you know what's really going on. It's going to cost them a lot of money, but he just showed that he considers some things more important more than money.

Nebraska coach (Hoiberg) taken to the hospital after coaching in the Big 10 tourney tonight with flu-like symptoms. Team held in locker room awaiting his coronavirus test results.

This may be enough to cancel March Madness altogether.

This is a serious concern for the elderly and those weakened by other diseases (diabetics, immunodeficiency diseases, etc.). It’s a doozy- but it’s not killing healthy people.

Hell, I had one of these last year- was out a couple days, had a cough for a while, then life moved on. China is stabilizing now, so its running its course.

The State of Washington is cancelling/outlawing all events which have over 250 people in attendance. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are in Australia and have tested positive for the Coronavirus, there. Luckily for them, they are in Australia where testing is readily available. If they were in the US and were trying to get tested, they may never be able to do so, with the current state of affairs regarding testing for Coronavirus, here in the USA. South Korea leads the world in getting people tested for this pandemic. South Korea tests over 10,000 people a day for Coronavirus. The US has tested barely 10,000 people, in total, since the Coronavirus came into existence back in Wuhan, China, almost  a year ago.  Trump disbanded the US's Global Pandemic response team just prior to this outbreak.  There are no plans for testing, that have been put into place, as of yet. Any minutes or findings from the Trump Administration's meetings regarding this pandemic are being kept secret from the public. Projections, in the US, for how many people will be affected by this virus fall into the 30 million to 150 million range, if the response is not effective. The numbers increase exponentially. The US has about 65,000 ventilators, I believe, which will be needed for patients with respiratory illnesses and many of those illnesses do not include the coronavirus infected patients. If the virus gets a foot hold, and it looks like it has, in the US, look for MASH type tents around US population centers to be employed by Health Organizations to treat patients as the hospitals will be overwhelmed. The exposure curve we face in the US is closely following Italy's exposure curve on the charts. Italy has many more people exposed to the coronavirus than the US does because they are closer to the disease as it spreads across Europe. Italy is barring travel into or out of the country and will, reportedly, be closing all businesses, stores and shops except for grocery stores and pharmacies. The devastation to their economy will be matched only by the devastation to the numbers of the infected population. All, while we worry about whether or not there will be a sporting event go to. The bungling of the response to this pandemic, in the US, will cost many lives. The best advice we have received from Health organizations worldwide, is to wash our hands for at least 20 seconds; Stay home from work if you are sick; stay away from public places/events; Cover your mouth if you are going to sneeze; do not touch your face; and clean surfaces, doorknobs and light switches in your home with a cleaner containing bleach or another virus /bacterial killing agent. Good luck finding anti bacterial cleaning agents in the stores, now. You might be better trying to order them online and have them shipped to your house, anyway, if the online retailers have any left in stock.

Posted this in the lounge, but I believe it bears putting here. Lots of misinformation out there fueling hysteria. People need to educate themselves. Here is the take from a pretty well-respected Stanford MD.

ER doctor perspective:

At this point, the cat is out of the bag.  The virus will spread and many will get sick.  Currently, it appears that most people will not die from this virus.  However, the older you are and the more health problems you have, the greater the risk for significant issues.

The main goal will be to slow down the rate of infection so as to allow those who are really sick to be taken care of.  Simply put (in example numbers) if 1000 people are infected in a small town, it's better to have them seek medical care over a one week time period than in one day. We will probably not be able to control the amount of people that get sick, but we might be able to control when they get sick.  That is the reason that group gatherings, sporting events, etc are being cancelled.

Hand washing, sanitizing, etc are important steps.  Do the same things you would do to avoid getting sick from any other type of illness.   This is NOT an airborne disease.  It is a respiratory droplet disease.  Meaning secretions from coughing/sneezing get on a surface or on you and then get into your body when you rub your eyes, pick your nose, etc.

Although, it seems counterintuitive, unless you are REALLY sick, don't go to the doctor/ER.  The first step would be to call your doctor and have them direct you regarding the next step.  If they just tell you to go to the ER, then they are not well informed.  Most likely they will have you call your local health dept.  who will ask you a bunch of questions and determine if you need testing.  They will help coordinate this testing if needed.

This going to get worse before it gets better.  Be patient, be kind, be rational. Above all else, remember that the bears and the viqueens will still suck.

When Magic Johnson had/has HiV, they didn't cancel the season.

Unless he was going to have sex on the court with someone or share a needle during the game there was no risk. HIV is not transmissible via contact, sweat, air, etc. It's also a retrovirus, not a coronavirus, that makes a difference. Also, given the drug cocktails he was on (at least when he came back to play in the mid-90s), his viral titers (the amount of viral particles in his blood) were probably almost undetectable. HIV titers are astronomically high the first few days or weeks of an infection, but then in most patients drop to very low levels. Magic probably had a high fever for a few days a couple of years before he was diagnosed and would have been most infectious then (but even then would need to have sex or share blood with someone to transmit). The trouble with  HIV is that slowly kills off all your CD4+ T cells (which are key immune cells to fight infections). You don't die from the high viral titers (or your bodies response to it - which is what happened with 1918 Spanish Flu) as much as you die from it slowly killing off your immune system.

In contrast, coronavirus likely replicates to very high titers and someone who is infected basically becomes a coronavirus factory. Every time you sneeze or cough, it's likely you expel millions (and probably billions) of viral particles from your body.

The problem with this virus is it's almost a perfectly virus to spread through a population and be dangerous to a portion of it. It appears to be incredibly contagious and most people carry it with minimal to moderate symptoms and then recover. However, it looks to be incredibly dangerous to the elderly and those with respiratory problems.

COVID-19 seems to be in the perfect window for a pandemic virus. If it was too lethal too quickly (like Ebola) it would burn itself out quickly because if people die rapidly from it they don't have a chance to spread it. If it was less dangerous (like a common cold) we obviously wouldn't be worried about it.
