-Like everybody here I have been anxiously awaiting who will be our new DC because it will start to shape the 2018 draft board.  Here are my thoughts on the implications of each hire!

  1. Vic Fangio (the clubhouse leader) - almost certainly will beg Gute for a long lean pass rusher like Aldon Smith (SF) or  Floyd (Chi)  - Celin Ferrell or Arden Key looks the part  Dark Horse Marcus Davenport could  mean a trade back.

  2. Gus Bradley-  (Hail Mary candidate) - would probably love Daniels and Clark , Perry and perhaps Lowry as his down 4 and move Clay or  Fackerell  to SLB (I think either of these two might be very good )  in this role duking TE's and not getting pounded by tackles all day.  He might make Josh Jones a star as a weak-side LB and Martinez playing a modern MLB role.   Definitely would want situational rushers and could be happy with a 2nd or 3rd day pick to help the pass rush.   Probably wants taller corners so again might be happier with later pick to find his Richard Sherman.  This would make M3 happy-  he could get a competent RT (if Bulaga is iffy coming back) or one of the top WR's at 14.

3). Mike Pettine - (WhoTFK candidate) as Packer Notes reminds  me from the Rex Ryan tree, wants fleet feet on the field so again Josh Jones could be prominent in his scheme-  I don't know enough about his recent work as he was in an advisory role for two years so who knows what he likes!  Definitely would be aggressive- but is it Slovick aggressive or Jimmy Johnson ??

Maybe in yards, points spell out something different and points are what really matters. Nobody freaks out about a defense giving up 500 yards but only 3 points. Maybe he is great and has had bad luck with teams he’s been on...The Factory of Sadness ruins all coaches good and bad and the end of Rex Ryan’s time in NY was a disaster beyond saving by even a brilliant Coordinator. Pettine has faced Rodgers once and allowed only 9 points (2010). Something to be said for that.

Pettins style is different for sure, complete 180 to Capers. He’s energetic, in your face, and calls defense from the field. Players may respond positively to him. He’s a Packer now that and has my 100% support.

I’ll always be bothered by the fact wade Phillips was unemployed in a stretch while dom wasn’t... not that he’d come here since in 2010 the packers were the coach killlers.

seems like a smart hire, an intelligent, motivational coach; leading a very young defense. Retaining joe Witt is key IMO.

I hope they get after it, My gut feeling is in 1265, new GM tells old HC, the way it is... you have 12; do you want to be Shula, or Landry?

I thought I read that GB had an interview set up with Fangio today ?

I read somewhere that Fangio and Capers were close pals...and that Fangio would come to GB only if Dom gave him a favorable opinion of the Packers.  So...??

I know it was Cleveland and all... and their D was pretty good all things being equal, it seems a bit underwhelming. Apparently Fangio not interested, or maybe he wanted a bidding war.

Crazy part- Wikipedia already updated. Wtf...

WTF? What's the rush? Well Pettine must have kicked ass in his interview, or given MM the secret Pennsylvania handshake. If MM believes he's the guy then let's roll.

Moving quick means our new DC will get his pick of best available assistants, assess the roster, bust out of his silo and tell MM, Gute et al his wishlist for the draft and free agency.

Wow, when was the last time we thought the Packers could be making a serious play in free agency? I don't even care if we get a shiny new overhyped/overpaid playmaker, how about a few assignment-sure, savvy vets to help the rooks get up to speed. YES, I love this off-season!

I think this is key!

Interesting Packer connection.  Don Majkowski was the Virginia QB in 1985.  While Pettine is not listed on the 85 roster he is on the 86 and 87 roster.  So he must have been on the team when Majkowski  was there.

First Wikipedia and now Google search? What a world we live in:

I like this hire a lot.  The guy brings a no nonsense approach to being aggressive on defense.  I know some may question why the Packers jumped so quickly at him perhaps it was because he was highly sought after.

I for one like the guy and how aggressive he is so hopefully that "edge" rubs off on the players.

Wonder how many of the points against were because these guys gave up a pick-6 or a short field? 3 and out?

My guess is that the subject of potential changes in the way GB runs it's defense ( among other things ) has been a back burner issue for quite a while prior to Capers being let go. I guess Penttines defensive philosophy fit the powers that be vision going forward = done deal when Penttine became available. But who knows. With all the smoke and mirrors involved with coaching changes ( on any given team ) it's hard to say one way or another.

From JSonline:

“History tells you they like to pressure,” the play-caller said. “Interestingly, I read that he has been spending time with Pete (Carroll) up in Seattle. That defense is much simpler from what he ran in the past.”

According to the source, who asked not to be identified, general manager Brian Gutekunst is going to have to pick players who can handle the complexity of Pettine’s defense. The assistant coaches are going to have to be excellent teachers and the talent should be 3-4 in nature with the ability to play multiple positions."

Old assistants need to go.  I would be nice to see Pettine bring in Seattle concepts but I can't imagine he'll deviate from what he knows.  Nice pedigree but I'm on the wait and see train.  More than anything I'm waiting to see how this overall power structure change shows up on the field.  I had confused Pettine with Marrone, who is an asshole, so at least he's got that going for him.  He's not Marrone.

I cannot wait to see what Pettine brings to our Defense. Anyone know where his draft wants lie? D Line? DBs? LBs? Pass Rushers?  The combine is just over a month away. I'm sure some draft wants will clarify themselves a lot there.

Yes I think it's likely his defenses have been on the field a lot due to crappy offense. His best two defenses were in NY when they ran the ball like crazy with Thomas Jones, LT, and Shonn Greene, so you would imagine they kept the defense off the field quite a bit with that kind of ball control. Pick-6's probably skew the stats some, but that's not that common of an occurrence to think it was impacting stats in a major way. Overall I cut him slack because he's coached on some real sh*t show teams, but those numbers are concerning.

Even #52 has to admit that he’s probably past the days of bringing it from the edge. And with Perry a versatile player (when healthy) he plays DE, they could go even and Matthews is the SAM. I agree with the idea that Jones plays a wild card, but they also need to assess Burnett’s long term with the team. He gets hurt an awful lot, and they need stability in the secondary more now than ever. Could a Eugene Robinson like signing be in store?

GD:  I am all in on Pettine as well and I hope he does great!!  As I have said many time's Rodgers would be near orgasmic not needing 24 a week to win.  You made me think when you mentioned that 09 game against the Jets.  Remember it was played in a gale and Jennings dropped a sure TD in the 4th Qtr.

Now we just need to get him Revis II to own the left side of the field and we should be set!

That defense had the right players at key positions also. It has a smart veteran FS in Jim Leonard, two good ILBs (Bart Scott, David Harris), a good NT (Sione Pouha), and 2 good CBs (Revis, Cromartie). Calvin Pace was their best pass rusher and he only had 5 sacks. We have to get better at FS, CB, and ILB next to Mart. That’s the priority.
