It sure feels like the "year after year of spending " has been devoted to the defense for an eternity. A lot of that is compounded because of all of the misses (Ugh)...but at this point the defense only used 27.65% of the Salary Cap in 2019(ranked 30th NFL). Certainly that can and will change quickly...but @#%

 

Agree that it will be a challenge to patch everything. As good as 13-3 was, the strong needs at ILB, ILB, DE, WR, TE, (RT?), etc...are apparent. 

What % is the D at if you subtract ******' contract?  Just curious but he is a field tilter in this respect also.

Did great work with Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris. Sendejo played better under him in MIN than he did in Philly also. It's weird to see coaches hired instead of just promoting interns to take over major position groups. 

New blood is almost always good. Get someone from outside who can come in and tell you a different perspective.

Hey, I'm for any coach that challenges the status quo, questions other coaches, and who pushes the envelope. Just as players should never get too comfortable in their jobs on the field, coaches should never be too comfortable in their headsets.

I think MLF wants Gray to stand up to Pettine when the situation warrants it. Pettine will know that Gray could be the DC, very easily, and that Pettine had better not sleep through a defensive series, or a game, like they did in SF. 

I like the hire, MLF sends Pettine a message, Gray adds experience and options. 

Or maybe they wanted an experienced guy to teach the young secondary 

A slow start for the defense in 2020 & Pettine could be history at the bye.

I prefer to think of it as though the spermheads aren't smart enough to keep good coaches.  There is no denying what he accomplished with their DB's and I think he will be a huge positive for Amos and Savage.

I prefer to think of it as the spermheads holding onto the problem.  It's alot like McVince firing and hiring coaches at the end.  Zimmer is going to run out of coaches at some point.  Then Spieldope and ZimDum can go down in flames together.

Many, many years ago, I was a manager for a fast oil change franchisee. I had been on the job for 6 months or so, and was approached by my boss, asking if I wanted to take on an ex-manager that had just recently resigned.
I could've looked at this 2 ways; become paranoid that the company wanted to 'plant a spy' or set me up to take over my job, or jump on a unique opportunity to add experience, maturity, and skill to my staff.

I chose the latter, and never looked back. It worked wonderfully well, and benefited me (and the company) greatly.

Yeah, or he's just a good coach also and those are valuable. I don't think there was any intent to put anyone on notice, just adding a good coach to your staff.

If competition between players is considered a good thing, why not between coaches?

Yup, I want a coach who will challenge the status quo. I wanted someone to step up and tell Pettine and MLF when there's a disagreement. MM at the end especially had all cronies who just went with the flow. I hope Gray, and whoever else, serves as a rock in the stream to stir things up with new ideas and insights.

Because coaches aren't players? Competition implies there will be a winner and loser. For players they're competing against each other for playing time and roster spots? What's the winner of a competition between your DC and DB coach get? Coaches should push each other to be better and make their position groups better and work as a team, I'm unclear on what a competition between coaches accomplishes?

Another thing, Pettine isn't hiring or firing anyone.  It was one of McVince's turds who "left" that made Gray's hiring possible.  Pettine was saddled with McVince yes men as much as anyone.

Not necessarily power struggles. You don't want guys working against each other trying to get ahead of the other guy. You want them working together to push each other to get better, to challenge them. For example, I wonder if anyone stood up in the defensive game planning meetings and challenged Pettine if stopping the pass should really be the top priority vs SF. Healthy debate is good. But if one guy gets stuck and the other guy is right more often, see ya! first guy.
