In last 10 seasons, #Saints been shutout 2 times in the 1st half (reg and playoffs) entering today. This is the third. #seahawks

Since the start of the 2007 season, teams to shut out their opponents in the 1st half of a playoff game are just 4-3.

@TomPelissero

Percy Harvin is OUT with a concussion

Saints last pts vs Seahawks came with 8:45 left in 2nd qtr in their Week 13 game. So through half, Seattle has blanked Saints in last 68:45.

Have to hand it to the Saints, Armoured wherever you are. They played a lot tougher than I thought they would, especially on defense. Nice work, and a good season. You were probably one Carolina win away...

Marques Colston's final play lateral was called by Saints coaches

cbssports.com

by John Breech on 1-13-14

Saints coach Sean Payton didn't really answer the question when he was asked about it after the game, but he did it answer it on Monday.

Payton said Colston's lateral was planned and that the Saints called the play because they saw something on film that made them think it would work.

Payton did concede that he might have called the play to early. There were 13 seconds left when Brees took a third-and-2 snap from the Saints' own 49.

"We're probably maybe a play early from [needing to call] it, but with no timeouts... " Payton said via ESPN.com. "We'd kind of seen something on tape, Marques has got a pretty good arm. You know, hindsight, [it was] a play where he could have caught it, stepped out and then maybe [we throw] a Hail Mary to the end zone. But it was a play we had put in a week and a half ago, prior to this game, which was a deep throw to Marques and then across the field to Cadet. So, yeah, he wasn't freelancing." continue

Thanks Fandame.   Overall, this season exceeded my expectations (my preseason prediction was 10-6 and MAYBE backing into the #6 seed.  A 10-6 record is not a guarantee for the playoffs in the NFC, as shown by the Cardinals).  If position coaches and coordinators could qualify for Coach of the Year, Rob Ryan would definitely be up there.  Turning around the worst defense in NFL history was nothing short of incredible.  If we continue to draft well and not go over the cap (Loomis is among the best in the business at crunching the numbers), I like our chances going forward.  We need to upgrade the secondary, bolster the O-Line and find a reliable kicker.  Also, I believe we should part ways with Mark Ingram and go with Khiry Robinson.  Aside from the occasional flash of brilliance, Ingram hasn't done nearly enough to earn his starter role.  Of course, the first order of business is locking in Graham to a long-term deal.  Brees has said he's willing to restructure his contract, so every little bit helps.

Sounds like this might be the new way of looking at QB contracts.  Hit the Jackpot (Brady, Brees, AR, Wilson/CK??) and be the highest paid player for a year or two, and then talk about a restructure.  That way the QB can save face and say he is the highest paid player at the position, and then look good in 2-3 years, about "giving $$$ back" for the good of the team.  Except we all know that the QB won't give $$$ back, so when do these restructures, actually hurt the team.

In Hockey they would back load the contract knowing full well, the player wasn't going to get $35M in 2020.  I think with the new CBA they are not allowed to do that anymore.

just a thought...but...maybe Payton was smarter than we think....it might've been a genius play call...if it worked....since most Defenses would NOT expect the lateral play at that juncture...on the next down (last play of game) then, they would assume a Hail Mary or a Stanford-Cal type play...but not with 13 seconds left...

If you watch the play again...notice the back in the backfield look at Brees and wait...and try to time his pass route up the other sideline...he just timed it wrong...

the play assumes that the LB in charge of the back will look at Colston after Brees throws the ball...once he turns his back, the RB takes off....

the play also assumes the DB's and Safety will slide over to Colston and watch only the WR's coming across the middle...thus, forgetting about deep help on the RB.

IF the DB's and Safeties get fooled and if the RB waits a tad longer to circle his route and go to the other sideline...the pass might've been backwards and no one would catch the RB racing into the endzone...

I think it's a great play call.  It just didn't work because it wasn't executed properly.

One interesting thought on that WR throw across the field is this:

IF a team is low on time at the end of a game, they will often forgo throwing over the middle and the defense will be more than happy to allow them that space unmolested knowing it will run down the clock.

But- what if a WR catches the ball over the middle and throws it slightly backwards towards another WR along the sidelines and it goes out of bounds over his head...wouldn't that be a way to stop the clock when you are out of time outs ?

I assume you'd get the ball at the point of launch ( last possession)or where it went out of bounds ? and that the clock would then stop.

He can't just toss it out of bounds though- it has to look like a pass attempt

Might work in a desperation situation

Man I have always been under the impression once you're past the LOS you can only throw a backward pass. Throwing a forward pass beyond the LOS is paramount to advancing a fumble ala Dave Casper IMO.

What do I know.
