I happened to be driving a lot today and listened to multiple sports shows talk about NIL.  (name, image, likeness for those living under a rock). I personally do not have a problem with athletes wanting more $.  College sports, football in particular, are huge money generators.  My biggest problem with the situation is how it got to this point in the first place.  Why does getting a scholarship to attend a college/university have anything to do with sports?  It feels like the plot line to a movie where a guy gets a job just because he can play on the plant softball team.

I played D3 soccer so maybe I'm jaded because I didn't get a dime, team meals, private tutors, etc.  I played because I loved competing.   I understand/hope that the money generated from college athletics improves the institution's ability to advance learning, but I wonder.

See this LSU library vs. football locker room article.

I am not naive enough to think that players haven't been getting paid under the table, given new cars, etc. for a long time.  Now with NIL coming around I truly and honestly have no issues with players getting a piece of the pie.  But, what I think needs to happen is that there needs to be some sort of control over what they can get and where they can get it from.   Not sure how that can be done but I wouldn't trust the NCAA to do it.  They would never say it but they want the big time schools having the best players going there because they can offer more NIL deals and in turn the NCAA just keeps printing money.

An example of how it possibly is out of control is what a top ranked QB recruit at O$U got just by showing up to campus. Ewers (who has since transferred after one year) got a brand new Ford 250 Tremor that cost $55,000 not counting all of the extras the dealer put on it for free.

Pretty sure John Clay was a Prop 48 guy so no big surprise he wasn’t interested in going to class.

The issue with NIL is it’s not an even playing field.  The legacy programs with donors and boosters and alumni will always be able to outbid and overpay.

To me, they should establish some limits but as with everything in life people will cheat and find loopholes.  Not that it wasn’t already happening.  See Reggie Bush, Cam Newton, O$U, oh wait β€œallegedly” lol

Why? Isn’t that the way life works? Don’t they currently go to the biggest programs anyway?
