"Love Ya Blue"
RIP Bum.
Sad.
Bum definitely marched to the beat of a different drummer, and was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise too-stodgy NFL. Love his NFL Films clips!
"There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired." On Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula: "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n." On Campbell's inability to finish a mile run: "When it's first-and-a-mile, I won't give it to him."
awwwwh, heck.
hate to see a good guy pass on.
See you on the flip side Bum.
RIP Bum
Who knew that statement wouldn't be derogatory?
Second favorite team growing up (colors same as my high school). Plus I loved Earl Campbell.
I've always hated the Steelers... Double sweet revenge in the SB.
the NFLFU could use a huge infusion of guys like Bum.
characters like him is what popularized the game.
RIP and enjoy you ol' cowpoke.
Loved the comment he made about kicking the door to the Super Bowl down. Funny that he worked in the same state as the ultimate button down coach (Tom Landry). He seemed more Texas than him.
So many great comments from Phillips. A few for Earl Campbell...
On his inability to finish a mile run: "When it's 1st and a mile I won't give it to him".
And then this: "I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but I do know that when that class gets together, it sure don't take long to call the roll."
Bum was sure no bum. He may not have been the world's greatest coach, but he knew how to coach, and he knew his way around memorable quotes, as so many have noted here.
