Nice to be able to post this topic on the last day.  Let's hope next year we start even later!

http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/...ded-for-free-agency/

Garza will join Eric SogardAnthony Swarzak and Neil Walker as Brewers free agents.

Garza, who will turn 34 in November, will hit the market for the first time since the winter of 2013-14, when he inked a club-record contract with the Brewers that guaranteed him $50 million over four years and was thick with incentives and options. The deal was so complicated, it took days to finalize after word leaked that the sides had come to terms on the broad strokes of the agreement. It was eventually announced during the Brewers' annual fanfest.

It included a vesting option for $13 million in 2018 that would have kicked in had Garza started 110 games from 2014-17, pitch 115 innings in 2017 and finished this season healthy. He's healthy, but fell short in starts and innings.

Wow!  Didn't realize how perilously close we were to seeing this plug next year!

Short Member.

Good bye Garza, Jeffress, Torres, Guerra.  Resign Sogard. He's a good bench guy and can fill in at SS, 2nd and probably 3rd.  Not sure what to do with Walker. He's a smart savvy  veteran who may have helped win a few games earlier in the season.  I'd bring him back unless he wants outrageous $$$$$. Try and trade Braun for a starting pitcher. We are loaded with young outfielders that can play.  2018 playoffs here we come.

Send cash and sogard to the cardinals or cubs in exchange for less cash.  Jeffress, Torres and Guerra will all be back fighting for spots in the pen, Torres and Guerra with short leashes cause they are old.  I think Walker will walk.  Team might try to bring back Swarzy.  Braun won't be traded.  I can see the bossman telling Stearns to bring in the best starting pitching he can, but I don't see much of a market.  Maybe another skilled reliever.  I can see Broxton traded this summer.

Anderson and Davies and when healthy Nelson form a pretty decent starting trio but I would consider looking at free agency to add another guy to the rotation unless they think Hader is that guy then would leave free agency alone.  Woodruff should also be in the mix his last outing nonwithstanding.

Given Villar's finish and soon to be arbitration I'm not sure what they do with Walker and Sogard.  Both guys played well but Villar's versatility could win out.

Braun was extremely frustrating down the stretch to watch especially with guys on base but I can't see any team taking on his salary at this point so I would expect him to return.

They will need to retool the bullpen but if possible would be great to see Swarzak come back.  He was really good after the acquisition from Chicago and would give them an option to start Hader if they wanted to go that route.

The good news is I don't see a ton of moves being needed to remain competitive.

Looking forward to Garza and Torres being gone. Getting something for Braun would be great, but his salary is an albatross. I think Walker is going to go shopping for the best deal....Don't want to overpay a player like him.

Would think they will try to bring Swarzak and Sougard back.

Agree that Nelson, Anderson and Davies are a solid starting trio. Will be interesting to see if they move a guy like Hader into the starting rotation , or if guys like Wilkerson or Suter continue to develop. Good news is that Sterns is making decisions that have usually been on the money . Could he add a FA SP like Chatwood or  Lynn ?

I know this, we are in good shape not only with Stearns and Counsell at the helm, but Derek Johnson has done a great job developing this staff.

Jeffress signed too.  Jared Hughes thank you and have a nice career.

The Brewers and reliever Jeremy Jeffress also avoided arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year deal with two club options that could keep him in Milwaukee for three more seasons. Jeffress received a $1.7 million salary for 2018 and a $50,000 signing bonus, with club options for $3.175 million in 2019 and $4.3 million in 2020. He can earn an additional $2.2 million in incentives each season for innings pitched and games finished.

I was surprised by his answer

Gallardo is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

https://www.mlb.com/brewers/ne...gallardo/c-263677258

The Brewers are on the verge of a reunion with Yovani Gallardo, according to MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal.

Milwaukee has agreed to unspecified terms with its second-round pick from 2004. The club has not confirmed the report.

Gallardo, who is entering his age-32 season, has spent the last three seasons in Seattle, Baltimore and Texas, respectively, after an eight-year career with the Brewers from 2007-14. The right-hander ranks among the Brewers' all-time leaders in strikeouts (first, 1,226), wins (fifth, 89) and innings (seventh, 1,289 1/3).

And now there is this;https://www.mlb.com/brewers/ne...s-chacin/c-263835490

The Brewers have reportedly made another veteran addition to their starting pitching mix.

With confirmation of the Yovani Gallardo deal still forthcoming, on Wednesday news broke of a two-year deal with free-agent right-hander Jhoulys Chacin. The veteran Chacin turns 30 in January and is coming off a solid season with the Padres. MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal first reported that the sides were in agreement, and ESPN's Jerry Crasnick added that it's a two-year deal that guarantees about $8 million per season.

The Brewers didn't comment on the reports because, like Gallardo, Chacin would have to pass a physical before the contract is official.

Chacin has been a journeyman in recent years, after spending his first six Major League seasons with the Rockies from 2009-14. Since then, he's been employed by the D-backs, Braves, Angels and Padres, and is coming off a 3.89 ERA in 32 starts for San Diego while earning $1.75 million in 2017.

Let's hope our pitching coach has his magic wand polished up!
