Ok, gimme your top 6 predictions at the top of the draft. How does this thing fall now that the Jets trade happened?

  1. Browns
  2. Giants
  3. Jets
  4. Browns
  5. Broncos
  6. Colts

It all depends on Cleveland's QB thoughts, but as it stands,

1. Josh Allen

2. Sam Darnold

3. Josh Rosen

4. Saquon Barkley

5. Baker Mayfield

6. Bradley Chubb (with three seconds, Indy has good shots at Wynn and Hernandez if they want top OGs)

all depends if the Browns see the top 3 QBs as all the same, then they should draft Barkley first.  If not, A qb will go off the board #1

I agree with this.

Josh Allen is the wild card here. Not sure if he's lumped in with the other 3 guys or stands apart. With the Giants signing Solder & Eli not getting any younger, are they locked in to take a QB?

The other scenario I looked at, is the Browns drafting Barkley #1 overall, then taking the "left over" at QB at #4 as Bong points out here.

Main reason? Paying a QB #4 overall money instead of #1 overall. We've seen it pay dividends in Seattle & Philly with each winning a Super Bowl.

  1. Josh Allen - I think he stands apart from the other QB's & goes #1 overall
  2. Saquon Barkley - Gettleman ain't stupid, he won't reach for a project at QB, also Saquon ain't the only 1 getting paid!
  3. Sam Darnold - Jets like this pick - I think he'll bust but it's classic Jets
  4. Bradley Chubb - Edge Rusher here
  5. Josh Rosen - Elway will crow about how "They got the #1 player in the draft"
  6. Quenton Nelson - Colts needs to start protecting Luck

I keep going back to the Tyrod Taylor trade in my mind and trying to suss it out.

On one hand, the Browns have a metric crapton of picks, and later a crapton of contracts that will come due simultaneously. They also have money to spend now, likely before they're ready for a serious run.

On the surface, they swapped out a pick this year for a next year, spreading out the load, and getting a bridge QB that can eat some cap this season.

The part that keeps bugging me, though, is why not sign McCarron, who Jackson is familiar with, instead of trading with a team needing ammunition to potentially gum up your plans?

It comes down to the type of QB Taylor is vs. McCarron. What if Dorsey's plan really is to roll with Hugh and their offense building on R/PO concepts. In other words, what if their QB target is Lamar Jackson?

In theory, they could take Barkley #1 and Nelson #4 and still maneuver to get Jackson while the Giants, Jets, Broncos and Bills grab the "big-name four".

Actually, Old Home is the one I was thinking (the now Pickle).  Brat Kabin was across the street.  Pioneer still there, so is Shenan's.  The Cam burned down and Dooley's was built in it's place.  House of Rock just recently closed.

I was invited to the employee Christmas party for Clancy's bar.  And I didn't work there.  Impressed the hell out of my then girlfriend (now wife).    Only because I was there about 4-5 nights a week.  Back when you actually wrote checks, I looked back and for one stretch, out of 75 checks I wrote, 70 was to Clancy's Bar.

Is The Stable still there?

Rookie cap and salary slotting, this really isn't an issue. Just over $600k diff from #1 to #4.

Hue Jackson, laughably, is still the coach

Dorsey is in a no-win situation, if he fires Hue before the season starts, then he gets the blame, and when Hue fails, the media will pile on Dorsey for not giving Hue enough talent

  1. Cleveland Browns: Sam Darnold QB
  2. New York Giants: Saquon Barkley RB
  3. New York Jets: Josh Rosen QB
  4. Cleveland Browns (via Houston): Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB
  5. Denver Broncos: Josh Allen, QB
  6. Indianapolis Colts: Bradley Chubb  Edge

Stable is gone.

The guy that owned The Stable also owned Old Home back in the 80's. Stable was infested with cockroaches for awhile. Dive bars. Old Home was great because they had the old timers there from open to about 2:00pm. After 2:00pm. the place was overtaken by college students. Then they raised the drinking age to 21 and that ended the draw of Water Street as a place to get drunk for underage college kids.

Bob McGinn has been really good at the pre-draft game and his series has been interesting thus far. Aside from the four QBs Barkley, Nelson, Fitzpatrick and Chubb, he also lists Vea and Edmunds as likely to be gone by 14. He then drops the group projected to be available for the Packers first-round pick and players expected to go before their second, then has the group likely there for their second-rounder.

The only potential first-round TE he lists is Hayden Hurst. He also has Harold Landry listed in the second-round group with Lorenzo Carter, Malik Jefferson and Josh Sweat.

For a couple of bucks it's worth a subscription even if you just get the draft-only one.

Draft experts: what say you about this guy?

14. Packers — Mike Hughes, CB, Central Florida: An unsuccessful bid to pry Kyle Fuller from the rival Bears highlighted Green Bay's desire to repair a precarious outlook at cornerback. At 5-11, 191, Hughes just barely clears the minimum size requirements the Packers have typically demanded at the position, but he thrives with a physical approach

Where did you see that? Hughes isn't 5'11", he's barely 5'10", ran "only" a 4.53 and looked average in agility drills at the combine, so no. Potentially good return guy, though.

His style (Physical with WR's) probably fits with what Pettine wants to do. Seems like a reach at #14 overall in the first round but seeing more mocks with him getting drafted higher. Maybe the GM's have been keeping him under wraps.

Bucky Brooks has him going #13!

Oh.

Hell.

No.

I like Chubb but those picks are very important this year. For things to go well, Gutekunst needs five immediate "contributors" from this draft, including a starting corner or two, an offensive lineman who can play right away and a meaningful pass rusher.

I think WR needs to be mentioned as well but just have the feeling that’s gonna be ignored. Aside from DL this team needs help in every category, Thompson didn’t  leave this team in as great of shape for Gute as many of you are led on to believe

WEAKNESSES

Has played just two years of college football with just one season as a starter. Not as natural with mirror and match footwork as he will need to be on next level. Lacks height and gets high-pointed by capable wideouts with size. Plays too tall in his backpedal and from off coverage which slows transitions on the throw. Allows physical receivers to knock him off the top of the route. Needs more practice and game experience for improved pattern recognition. Coverage balance is hit-or-miss. Has room for improvement as a tackler.

I know we need DBs and Pass Rushers but Calvin Ridley may fall to us since other teams seem to be jockeying themselves for a QB.  If Ridley is there at 14 and I am Gute, I don't know if I could pass on him. I'd have to think Ridley could be the best player left on the board at #14.

I'd sign Tramon Williams. Draft Marcus Davenport at 14. Draft Donte Jackson in rd 2. Trade back into the end of rd 2 for BPA. GB has the 1st pick in rounds 4 and 5, 5 total picks in those two rounds. I wouldn't give up a lot to move up in round 1. But they can give up less to move back into the end of round 2.

Gut Reaction here. I agree with the first part of your post Chilli. I would sign Tramon and maybe even House too and then simply let the draft come to us. There are good players available at the spots we have and if  we trade draft picks I hope they are only the most later ones, like the 6th and 7th.

Why do they have to take a receiver early? We have a pretty good top 3 in Adams, Cobb, and Graham with pretty good depth in Allison and Kendricks. There's some young developing talent in Clark and possibly Yancey (more of an unknown) also. I think this squad could get away with waiting until the mid-rounds to draft a developmental type this year especially when you consider we've seen Rodgers churn out numbers with less talented depth (Jarrett Boykin anyone?).

Unfortunately they need to draft CB early and possibly often.

I ran an interesting Fanspeak mock this morning and I think I would be thrilled if it turned out this way even though "need" got sidetracked with DB runs just before the early picks. The Cleveland trade loomed big in this simulation, IMO.

1. Tremaine Edmunds LB (it was either him, Davenport or Mike McGlinchey as BPA)

2. Leighton Vander Esch LB (O-line and DBs went extremely heavy between picks, next best CB was Quenton Meeks, who's a 3rd IMO)

3. DJ Chark WR (Meeks, Anthony Averett and Austin Corbett (OL) went just before, Donte Jackson, Nick Nelson and Isaac Yiadom are lower on their chart to target top of 4)

4a. Donte Jackson CB (I'm now completely cool with missing out on earlier DB runs. I think the Cleveland trade made this possible)

4b. Isaac Yiadom CB (really liked Dalton Schultz, Kalen Ballage and Scott Quessenberry here too and picks were really close together.)

5a. Dalton Schultz (TE over interior OL from a bodies standpoint. Again probably Cleveland trade got me a guy I wanted)

5b. Holton Hill CB (With two solid character CBs on board the talent was worth a flier here)

5c. Kentavius Street DE (Fumagalli and Durham Smythe were still on the board but a potential early sub-package pass rusher was too tempting)

6a. Durham Smythe TE (Fumagalli gone, but Smythe is a better blocker, IMO)

6b. Cole Madison OT (Kind of lean, but a good pass blocker already, he's the Spriggs pusher/replacement)

7a. Jamil Demby OT/OG (Wanted a guy who has also played some Center but oh well)

7b. Michael Joseph CB (I really like him as a late CB prospect)

They don't have a true #1 WR at the boundary.  I love Adams and he can do some things on the edge but he's not prime Jordy.  After him we have a bunch of slow slot guys who are easy to jam with nobody to draw deep coverage.  Graham is supposed to eat up the middle the middle of the field, and that will make our wide guys' jobs easier, but he's no spring chicken and will see plenty of S attention.  I'm as excited about Clark as the next fan but I wouldn't bet on him being a #3 this year, at best.

Jarrett Boykin flashed for 1 year as a #3 while prime Jordy, J. Jones and rookie Eddie Lacy were on the field.

I disagree.  Adams is absolutely a legit #1 WR.  He's got a much different skill set than Jordy, but he can still dominate a game.  And with Jordy gone, he should see even more balls.  I'm excited to see his production go to the next level.  Even though he's had 10+ TDs the past two seasons, I think he can still improve.

Adams isn't the deep threat/game breaker receiver lined up very wid, not that he isn't a primary guy. Jordy was surprisingly good at getting open deep which I think the team needs.

I'm really starting to think Rollins might get his shot at Free Safety this season rather than back at corner if they draft heavy at CB.
