I think Thompson drafted a lot of guys who weren't good fits outside of specific schemes that weren't what the Packers were running on D. We've now seen what many of us thought: Mucus Hyde is a solid safety but on the Packers he was forced to play corner, where he simply lacked the necessary speed, because they didn't have corner talent. Just a few years before, safety was basically a wasteland.

All teams have strengths and weaknesses but TT's biggest issue is he let certain positions be in utter shambles too often. If the price of drafting poorly is free agency, he truly earned Tightwad Ted in that aspect.

Ted’s fault or Mikes fault?

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards Josh Jackson as the guy.  He fits a position of need.  He has the size you are looking for and most importantly, he has produced on the field.  In short, he's done it... he's not a combine guy that has great numbers that don't necessarily match his production.

Send it in Gute.  Josh Jackson is the right man at 14.

Can’t you picture Sherman trying to snap a pencil after Ted drafted Rodgers but ending up balling up his resume after failing to crush his empty can of Fanta.

Brandt loves to relay the story of the draft party below the war room at Lambeau going full throated booooooo after the Rodgers pick was announced.

They were boing Ted’s lap.

My thoughts exactly.   I was hoping he ran a poor 40 at the combine so that he would be there for us at 14.   The stars look to be aligning, just need the trigger man to squeeze.

Landry would be "more ready" to play right out-of-the-box, but Davenport appears to have a higher ceiling. Struggled in first couple of Senior Bowl practices facing better players, but came on at end of week & made a couple of "splash plays" during the game. Heard him interviewed on radio & came off as humble & articulate. My best guess as to who we end up with would be:

Landry, Davenport, Jackson, or  Vea

Of course if James, Fitzpatrick, Ward, Smith, or Edmunds were there at 14 they would probably take one of them.

Nice listen on the drafting of 12 from Andrew Brandt (note the comment at the 2 minute mark):

In 2005 before the draft, sports radio in our area (not sure of station anymore), was doing an on-the-air mock draft and talking thru each pick as they made them.  They had the 49ers taking Smith.  And Rodgers fell to number 26 - 2 past the Packer pick.  I thought that was interesting since a lot of those teams in-between needed a QB too.  It was just that those same teams had more pressing issues elsewhere.  It was one time TT stuck to his board rather than cave and take the "need pick".  I am not so sure I would have had the guts to do that.

Henry,  I am curious as well for what they will do for the draft.  Do they value corners more than pass rushers?  Will they throw us for a loop and draft a OG/OT in the first round?  Personally and this is only a hunch on my part I think we will be seeing a draft of giving Pettine as many toys as possible.

A lot of mocks have the UTSA edge guy going to GB. Pass rush is huge, but is he more of a combine guy or did he actually produce?

He's productive and has a great skill set to boot. He's a bit raw. He took time to adjust to the level of competition at the Senior Bowl, for example, but by game time he was dominating.

I read on 247 Sports that ESPN has the Packers trading up if necessary to get one of 3 players.  Ward, Fitzpatrick, or James.  So take that for what it's worth.

Again these players mocked to the Packers are based on what the Packers NEED. If there are players there, like these, I'm sure the Pack will take a serious look at them. Right now, all the mock draft sites are guessing as much as we are as to who the Packers will pick at 14. I'd love to see the Packers' board to see what value they place on these rookies as BPA/Need goes.

The scouting reports on Davenport are consistent:

Undeniable athletic talent. Improved every year at UTSA.

Very coachable. Humble kid. High character. Loves football.

Raw skills with incredible potential.

Consistent. One of the best in college when looking at QB pressures per defensive snaps.

He would be a perfect situational pass rusher in GB in 2018. He’s probably getting close to double digit sacks on talent and skill alone. But you can’t draft long term situational anything at 14 in the draft. If you draft an edge guy at 14 he’s got to replace Clay Matthews very soon.

IMO Davenport is a good nfl player with bad coaching. He’s potential pro bowl material with good coaching. Which brings us to Winston Moss. I’m not in love with the idea of entrusting someone with Davenports potential to Winston Moss.

If the top two LBs and the top three Dbs are gone when the Packers pick, I would see them going for LB Rashaan Evans. The guy is solid and would instanly upgrade the defense and could play inside or outside.  Then move up into the last part of the 1st round and grab one of the best CBs still there, maybe Oliver or even Jackson tho I see Jackson going to Dallas.

And Silverstein thinks the Packers will trade back because someone will move up for Lamar Jackson at 14.

What I've seen is not Davenport as a situational pass rusher.  He seems to set the edge fine and actually needs some work on his pass rushing skills.  He has the talent but needs development to be a complete OLB.  I don't know if our staff is capable of that.

Wanted to replay the 1st pick in 2007 - Ahhhh draft memories

That 2007 draft was not so great. Other than Joe Thomas, Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, and Darrell Revis taken before the Packers, nobody else stood out. And those taken after were a whose who of nobodys.

A good friend of mine emailed the other day and he knows exactly what the Pack will do tomorrow.  He knows his stuff and you can take this to the bank:

It suddenly entered my mind, like a spirit whispered it or something.
The Packers will either trade up, stay put or trade down in the draft this week.

I really think this will happen, too.

I'm tellin ya....While #14 is kind of "No mans land" it IS 1 slot in front of AZ & they are desperate for a QB - everyone knows it.

FYI - Cinci will pick Frank Ragnow at #21 - BOOK IT!

Many mocks have us picking Davenport. And may mocks have him listed lower than 14. What to do? What to do? Do we overdraft him or just pick the BPA at that position?
