WR, ILB, OT, DT is absolutely the need list. Spot on.
Watching last night. GB absolutely needs to once and for all fix the ILB position. They desperately need more speed on the 2nd level. Oren Burks is wildly frustrating. As much as he regularly flashes on ST, almost always first guy on the scene, he can’t seem to find a way to get on the field. He’s clearly got the speed GB needs at the position but it’s not translating into PT.
Also, GB needs a Debo Samuel, Mecole Hardman Jr gadget/slot/go fast WR to go between Adams and Lazard. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gute made a FA play for AJ Green either.

Pressing needs are WR, TE, OT, ILB in any order.  Need another DL and RB, but those can be grabbed in later rounds.  Another sneaky/under-the-radar need is OLB.  I don't know if Gary is a true OLB or not, or he maybe slides inside.  I think Fackrell is gone - he's a decent pass rusher, but cannot set the edge.  Z. can play snaps outside, but is more effective inside.

Huge need on offense.  Between WR, RB and TE we have 14 players:  2 are #1's (Adams, Jones), 2 are 3rd stringers (Jamaal Williams and Lazard), and the rest are just guys.

Last night showed the lack of talent in the middle of the defense. Between interior line and MLB we have 9 players:  1 is a #1 (Clark), and the rest (including Martinez) are just guys.

Those are the areas I think Gute attacks in the draft/free agency.

With Graham and Lewis almost aged out, it's time to consider adding another weapon to the arsenal.

Bad year for TE, however, a guy I really like is Washington H-Back Hunter Bryant. He is on the short side, 6'2 but his speed will probably be the best of all TE in the draft. He will stretch defenses in a big way. You could even line him up as a slot (which he did in college in various packages). I believe he will be available in the 2nd round when we pick.

FB seems to be a position they really want to emphasize going forward. Vitale is talented, but seems a bit injury prone.

We can upgrade, and it might not even cost us a draft pick.

A kid I am very familiar with because I've been watching him play since HS is Fresno State RB/FB Josh Hokit. Not a lot of highlights on him due to the fact not a lot of people considered him an NFL prospect, but he is based on athleticism alone.

His career at Fresno was really mis-managed. He was a walk-on because the old staff pre Jeff Tedford didn't like him...largely because he played 5 different positions in HS...QB/RB/OLB/ILB/SS

He signed a wrestling scholarship with Drexel (3 time state champion wrestler at 190lbs) but when Fresno State added wrestling he decided to stay home and do both.

The old staff started him at LB but because of piss poor recruiting had no choice but to move him to RB his true freshman year and the kid shined. He was the lone bright spot in a 1-11 season. 2017, his sophomore season, he was a workhorse at RB and kept his weight about 205-210 because he was going to wrestle at 190 right after football season. He is naturally more of a 235-245lbs kid. Junior year, 2018 he continued his strong campaign at RB, and then transitioned to wrestling with no problems. In fact, ended up becoming an All American, finishing 5th at 190lbs in NCAA tournament. Coaches had plans to let him go up to 240lbs, redshirt 2019, and transition to MLB to help his NFL prospects. He also decided to move up to heavyweight class for wrestling. But once again, injuries forced a bad decision for his NFL future, and the coaches asked him to play RB for us in 2019...which he did willingly...although this time he was up to 240lbs and so he quickly cut weight and played most of the season at 225lbs. Now he's back up to 240, wrestling very well. Last person to ever do both at a high level at Fresno was Lorenzo Neal. Hokit doesn't have the speed Neal had, but is fast enough. He also has better hands than Neal.

Best part about him...he has never missed a game in HS or college for injury. He is an absolute battering ram. I feel like if he gets in an NFL strength and nutrition program he's going to flourish. Mike Alstott comes to mind when I watch him.

He's the epitome of a "prospect" somebody will take a chance on and draft higher.  He wasn't a dominant TE at LSU but there was too much talent at WR for Burrow to throw to so he was kind of an afterthought in the pass game.  But I saw him flash once or twice a game when I was able to catch LSU late in the season and in the bowls.  I'd probably take that risk.

Hoping they look at ILB, OT, CB, or DT in R1 and then WR only in R2. So many WRs it’s hard to accept that there won’t be a good one available in R2.

We will likely are more UFA additions, so the list of needs will shift.

This.  After last night, ILB and DT are the biggest glaring needs, followed by OL and slot-type WR.  Wouldn't complain about TE or RB either.

If the run defense isn't fixed we're going nowhere.

Just going to say this now. When Mostert went untouched for a 36 yard TD on a 3rd and 8 inside trap against dime D it pretty much took the wind off the sail for 2019. The gap discipline and eye discipline in the secondary was awful. Counted two horrible angles by the secondary. To be fair. SF dialed up a great call and blocked perfectly at point of attack. But that call can’t go untouched against a dime defense for 36 yards.  GB needs real 2nd level 3 down ILB speed. If SF can find Fred Warner in round 3 then GB needs to find their Warner early. This ILB failure year after year has to end.

I’m also a huge fan of Sternberger. TE is a luxury pick GB can’t afford to make early in the draft given the need to improve ILB, OT, and WR.

I remember thinking at the time what a poor angle Savage took on that play. Fackrell was on that side and sort of fell down trying to avoid getting blocked by the TE, which had the effect of allowing the TE to block two guys at the same time. Even then, Savage needs to make that play 10-15 yards downfield.

Nick Collins, who had similar 40 times to Savage coming out, used to make the same mistakes his first couple of years. There is a lot of upside to Savage.

Alexander got too flat and Savage got too vertical on their angles.

I love Savage. He’s going to be fine. But GB needs a 3 down ILB like Kenneth Murray that’s 6’2” 245lb with legitimate 4.5 speed that can go boundary to boundary with anyone.

It’s a bitch to play back end run support if the 2nd level in front of you is invisible.

"... For NFL Draft purposes, Proche lacks size and tends to get swallowed up by more physical press corners which could limit him to slot work. His best attributes are a great feel for when to break off routes, quick feet, above-average agility and he catches the ball well outside his frame. His lack of size and top-end speed means Proche will likely be in the Day 3 mix."

Needs...

WR, ILB, OL, DT

I like it.  The beauty of all of this is that our GM will absolutely be a player in the FA market.  My hope is that Gute snags a WR and ILB at a minimum come mid-March.  That's not to say you don't draft a WR or ILB as well, but there's money under the cap to spend.

I like the thought of OL, in particular a C unless the plan is to move Jenkins there at some point soon.  While I'd absolutely resign Bulaga, it's time to draft a T.

DT is needed.  Lancaster is terrible and Lowry isn't much better.  Clark is a beast but GB needs to find more fat guys that can play.  Adams doesn't appear to be that guy.  Keke might develop.  Gary is 22 years old and 278 pounds.  Do we feed him cheese curds and line his ass up at DT?

Cutting the fat (Graham, Taylor, and Linsley are candidates).

I love the off season.  There's much to build on from the 2019 squad.

Draft is in Vegas this year. Wonder how it will work out? Hopefully get to see the new stadium.

Definitely more help on LoS. Both sides of the ball.

I read in the paper Sunday that they will be closing down the strip like it's New Years Eve.

If you take a cab / uber from the airport ask them to take the 15 to your hotel.   Can't miss the stadium as its right there at the start of the strip corridor but the opposite side of the freeway.

SF ran 24 plays on 1st down yesterday. 2 of those plays were passes. They averaged over 5 yards on 1st down. Running it 22 times.

SF blocked Kenny Clark. That was the game plan. Block Clark and get the RB to the 2nd level. That’s a pretty good game plan.

Gary should have had more than 3 defensive snaps.

He hasn't earned the snaps.    It's the same argument with Burks vs Martinez.   Anti Burks crowd says he hasn't earned the snaps in practice.   Same must apply to Gary then.

I imagine they will let Fakrell walk in FA so Gary should get those snaps next year.   But thats not gonna be more than 20 a game.

Don't know how much we can afford for free agents this offseason.  They are currently $18 million under the cap, assuming they cut Lane Taylor (6 million) and Graham (11.6 million) they get another $18 million.   The guys not re-signed  (Fackrell, Martinez,  etc) will cancel out most of  the cost of our draft picks.

However, Kenny Clark is likely to be somewhere in the $14-18 million range, so that eats up half the available cap.  Signing Bulaga is likely plus $10 million a year.

Not a lot of room for big splash free agent.  Drafting impact, immediate contributors in the first few rounds will be crucial.

Cutting Graham saves 8mil (3.6 dead)

Cutting Talyor saves 4.6 (1.4 dead)

If you want to get Crazy you can cut Linsley and save 8.5.   I don't think he is the source of our Inside problems though, I think it's Turner.   He can't be cut because we save nothing.

So realistically we have 12.5 million extra from cutting dead weight.   That's going to, or at least should, go directly to Bulaga.    That leaves 32 million after all the other FA's walk.  Over the Cap estimates are rookie pool will cost about 7.5.   That leaves us at 25.5 to extend Clark, sign our FA's and improve roster via FA/

https://overthecap.com/draft/
https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/green-bay-packers/

Summary

  • After cutting Graham and Taylor we are at 44.5 million under.
  • 12.5 to Bulaga puts us at 32 million
  • Rookie class puts us at 25.5 million
  • We have 14 open roster spots if we do not sign any of our other FA's and keep all our draft picks.
  • Certainly some of those will be kept at a discount because they are restricted.   Lazard, Sullivan, Kumerow, Tonyan, Redmond.  That's about 4 million leaving us at 21.5 with 9 roster spots left.
  • Mason Crosby needs to be signed,  Thats 4 million off leaving 16.5 and 8 roster spots.
  • Maybe M. Lewis at 2 million puts us at 14.5 million with 7 spots.

There really isn't a ton of space.   Maybe they do cut Linsley.   I'm pretty sure we can get close to his production for much less than 10 million.   It would save 8.
