The draft should take two days.  Agree that it will be a OT, DL or CB (so a WR or LB is probably what will happen).

I don't have a player I desperately don't want GB to draft this year (like Gary), but I do like the OT from Stanford

Yes! Walker Little would be a great add for the Packers. I think we can get him at pick #92, in Round 3, depending on any trades Gute does, though. I think Gute has plans to move up to #20, to get Newsome.

Found some interesting tidbits on the innerweb at landryfootball.com related to past Packer drafts.  I think most of us know about Mandarich/Sanders and Ray Lewis.  This is the first I've heard about Bart Starr's decisions as a GM. Montana and Lott???  Wow.

1979 โ€” Green Bay Packers scouts wanted to draft Notre Dame QB Joe Montana but coach and GM Bart Starr was not sure about Montana and instead drafted Maryland DT Charles Johnson.

This just the reverse of what I've read.  From America's Quarterback,  Bart Starr and the Rise of the NFL:

Reassured by an intense workout by QB coach Zeke Bratkowski Starr decided to draft Montana in the 3rd round.  Approaching the 5th year of the Packers rebuild, especailly on defense, the defensive coaches urged him to bypass Montana and draft Charles Johnson instead. Starr deferred  to their experience and drafted Johnson.  In later years Starr conceded this was the worst blunder he made as GM.  Too often he failed to trust hi gut. " My most serious mistakes inevitably occured when I failed to follow my convictions and deferred to someone with more experience" Starr stated.

Same.  Historically, the guys I really like aren't drafted by GB or turn out to suck more times than not anyhow.

If I had to guess what Gute is going to do... I think he will consider trading up for Newsome or Asante Samuel Jr, which of course means none of that will happen.

1981โ€”Missing out on Joe Montana, Packers HC/GM Bart Starr had to get a QB to try and save his job and took CAL QB Rich Campbell overruling the scouts who wanted to take USC Safety Ronnie Lott.

1989- Packers GM Tom Braatz and HC Lindy Infante may have lost their jobs by taking Tony Mandarich over Barry Sanders

1996- The Packers Ron Wolf was ready to select Miami LB Ray Lewis at #27 but the Baltimore Ravens jumped ahead of them and took Lewis. The Packers then took OT John Michaels out of USC over Texas DE Tony Brackens.

Contrast that to the 1958 draft class:
3 HoF Picks

Latest Mock, I had a choice between Darrisaw and Tucker. Tucker can play just about anywhere, so I took him. In truth, neither one of those players is likely to be there, but who knows?

29: R1 P29 G Alijah Vera-Tucker - USC

62: R2 P30 CB Paulson Adebo - Stanford

92: R3 P28 WR Dyami Brown - North Carolina

135: R4 P30 S Caden Sterns - Texas

142: R4 P37 LB Charles Snowden - UVA

173: R5 P29 DL Ta'Quon Graham - Texas

178: R5 P34 CB Ambry Thomas - Michigan

214: R6 P30 RB Elijah Mitchell - Louisiana

220: R6 P36 LB Justin Hilliard - Ohio State

256: R7 P28 EDGE Malcolm Koonce - Buffalo

I have no idea but it's clear something weird is happening to Fields draft stock that can't be explained by what happened in the college season and workouts.  He was #2 all year then made the championship game, losing to an Alabama team that was going to beat any team in college football.  Not sure what's made him drop.

I don't know much about scouting QBs but Wilson, Lantz and Jones have huge red flags.  Lance and Jones played just one season.  The opposing defenses that Lance and Wilson played likely had a combined zero future NFL starters (at least no more than a handful).  Jones played with a collection of offensive talent that was probably only matched by Ken Dorsey (with those early 2000's Miami teams) and Tua (in 2019).  The fact all that gets discounted is just weird.  But again, I don't know how to scout QBs so maybe they all see something I don't.

Iโ€™m not sure there are any clear cut canโ€™t miss guys like Joe Burrow - and that includes Lawrence.  Heโ€™s probably the best prepared and equipped but Lance, Wilson, Jones and Fields all have question marks.

You take a guy top 5 and you better hope heโ€™s at least solid enough to compete week in and week out but if you look over the last 10 years there have been a lot of swing and misses with QBs.

Honestly, if I were a GM I might take Fields 1st overall.  Heโ€™s easily the best athlete of the group and he can make all the throws.  Heโ€™s also played against really good competition and done well.

His mechanics need a little work, but thatโ€™s something that can be improved upon with coaching and development.

The one possible red flag on Lawrence is his moxie - is he totally committed to his craft?   He almost seems too laid back and relaxed.

All of the Field โ€œplummetโ€ is just a media invention that is driven by BS from their โ€œsourcesโ€. Fields is head and shoulders the 2nd best QB, personally I think heโ€™s QB1, in the draft and should be the NYJ pick unless theyโ€™re stupid...which they are im sure. Fields certainly wonโ€™t drop past 3 to SF. Shannahan knows QBs and knows there is no QB with better tools and offers such a broad array of skills. His system can make any QB look anywhere from adequate to MVP, so take an elite talent and youโ€™ve got a winner. Itโ€™s not complicated. If they pass on Fields then theyโ€™re idiots. Shanny will have any QB play well, but he will have Fields outplaying everyone.

One! This is the lying season. We don't really know where fields will end up

Two! Fields is not a sure thing.

With SF moving that far up with what would seem to be a 3 QB race at the top you can bet your sweet bippy it's lying season.

The one rumor apparently is "he's lazy".  I saw ESPN talking heads discussing Trevor Lawrence saying he doesn't have a chip on his shoulder and how if it was Fields everyone would explode.  Maybe he's lazy, maybe it's bullshit.

Posters were joking before but if Fields drops I'd put money on Gunt drafting him.  Considering he's half assing trying to get to a Super Bowl now it's probably a really good move.

I think the biggest blindspot by draft evaluators and media type is that a lot of "busts" become busts because of poor fit, poor coaching, poor scheme, and poor supporting cast.  Example is Darnold vs. Jackson.  If Jackson went to the Jets, I would bet he'd be a bigger bust than Darnold is being called.  And if Darnold went to the Ravens, he'd be viewed in a much different light.  But the opposite happened.

IMO, QBs fall into three categories: can't miss prospects that will be great no matter where they go (Luck, Manning, Elway, etc.), prospects that would be disasters no matter where they go (Russell, Leaf, Lynch, etc.), and prospects that need to go to the right spot to succeed (every other QB).  Burrow seems to be in the first category and I think Lawrence will too.  Every other QB in this draft is likely in that third category.  Wilson with the Jets has a higher bust potential than Fields to the Panthers.  But the opposite is true too.

I have to sit and wonder what would have happened had the Packers drafted Montana.  If I am being completely being honest I truly believed that era of the Packers would have would have screwed up even Joe Montana.

You got that right Fields is by far the best athlete of the top tier of QBs.  What I think is hurting him (at least in the pundits eyes) is the lack of success from O$U QBs over the years.  I don't think that is fair at all to him but I can see that being the case.

I agree with you if I was a GM I would give some real thought to taking him #1 over all.

Everything has been easy for Lawrence his entire career and I really am curious how he handles the adversity of Jacksonville. State champ, #1 recruit, stacked team around him, Natty winner, #1 pick, I'm sure he's expecting that it won't be long before he's MVP and a SB winner. Unfortunately for him he's going Jax, where QB careers die on contact. Urban might end up being a home run, but so far he really seems like he hates the NFL as much as Spurrier, Saban, and Kelly did. I really don't think he will last long as he actually has to 1) coach instead of unleashing elite athletes to ball and 2) make hard decisions and find a way to sell players without under the table cash and escorts...which means that the owner will probably hire Jeff Fisher after Urban has more heart trouble, the Jaguars will suck, and Lawrence's career will go the way of Marcus Mariota...if he's lucky he will forge a Ryan Tannehill path. More than likely his career will mirror Andrew Luck meaning early success, lots of injuries, broken spirit that leads to early retirement.

Digger, I can see it being tough for Lawrence for all the reasons you mentioned.  He is going to have a tough time getting started in Jax for the reasons you mentioned.

Urban is going to be interesting and I totally agree with you.  Urban won't be able to out recruit a team anymore and put out better talent.  And the biggest thing for me is he is not going to be able to run the same offense he ran in college.

I live pretty close to Columbus and I have seen almost off of Urban's coached games.  I truly believe he is not going to be able to run the same offense he did at OSU.  Some read/option works in the pros but he runs the quarterback a lot and I think his offense at times is to much finesse.  You are right he really has never had to coach real hard and that is going to be exactly the opposite in the NFL.

The problem I see with Urb is he thinks heโ€™s got it all figured out .  Like when he went off the rails about free agent visits and the accelerated schedule and basically whining about it.  I mean, thatโ€™s amateur hour BS.  You arenโ€™t going to be able to roll up and flash your national championship rings and players fawn all over you.

Youโ€™re right Urban, no one asked for your opinion because this is the big leagues now.  You havenโ€™t earned your stripes so go prove it on the field.  Until then STFU.  You wanted to run the show in Jacksonville so itโ€™s yours.

I donโ€™t see this any different than a boom or bust draft pick.  Either heโ€™s going to become wildly successful, or heโ€™s going to implode in spectacular fashion.  All I know is the track record isnโ€™t good for college coaches.  Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll come to mind but Urb isnโ€™t like either of those guys.

If you havenโ€™t figured out, Iโ€™m not an Urban Meyer fanboy.  I think heโ€™s got a bit of scumbag in him, and I donโ€™t believe a word he says.  That approach should work well with leading grown men.
