With the pre-season half-way over, current prediction:

OFFENSE

QB (2): Rodgers, Harrell
Cut: Coleman (Practice Squad/PS)
Comments: Harrell makes it by default, since Coleman way too green. Do not like Harrell at all, do not share McCarthy's/Thompson's faith in him -- at least what they say publicly. Still would prefer acquiring Colt McCoy from Browns at nominal cost, having him as a more talented and experienced #2. I do think odds are good Coleman makes it through waivers onto PS.

HB (4): Benson, Starks, Green, Saine
Injured Reserve/IR: Bennett
Cut: Tyler
Comments: Including Kuhn at FB, would mean 5 RBs total. I think justified based on Starks', Green's and Saine's injury history -- especially Starks' and Green's. Tyler may run hard, but overall unimpressive to me. Believe we could pick up a back as good any time. Not convinced worth devoting a PS developmental spot to.

FB (1): Kuhn
Cut: Cooper, Hoese
Comments: Had expected Cooper would show more to earn a PS slot, but haven't seen it or read about it.

WR (6): G. Jennings, Nelson, J. Jones, Cobb, Driver, Gurley
Cut: Borel, Moss (PS), Boykin (PS), Smithson, Gilleylen, Brewer
Comments: Gurley and Borel seem to be jockying for 6th slot. I just like Gurley's size/red zone potential. Moss and Boykin both seem to have potential for developing further on PS. People keep talking about trading Jones, but I think odds are low that happens.

TE (4): Finley, DJ Williams, Crabtree, Taylor
PUP: Quarless
IR: Lair
Cut: Bostick, Cosby
Comments: No surprises. Lair already on IR. Not sure what Packers do if Quarless healthy to return after being on PUP first six weeks. Maybe put him on IR at that point, give him all 2012 to recover, unless one of top 4 TE's gets injured and creates an opening.

OL (8): OT's Bulaga, Newhouse, Taylor, G's Sitton, Lang, Wells, C's Saturday, Dietrich-Smith
PUP: OT Sherrod, G Brooks
IR: OT McCabe
Cut: OT's Datko (PS), Allard, G's Dominguez, Barclay, Van Roten (PS), C's Draheim (PS), Genus
Comments: Sherrod disappointingly starts year on PUP. Brooks already on it. McCabe already on IR. EDS first up at C or G, but Wells provides good veteran depth at G as well. OT Taylor makes it by default, cut when Sherrod makes it back. Would prefer Thompson pick up a veteran OT like Kareem McKenzie or Veron Carey to replace Taylor. Had hoped for more from Dominguez. Good depth on PS to develop with OT Datko, G Van Roten (or possibly Barclay), C Draheim.

DEFENSE

DL (7): Raji, Pickett, Worthy, Daniels, Wilson, Muir, Merling
Suspended: Neal (4 games), Hargrove (8 games)
Cut: Guy (PS), Wynn, J. Jones
Comments: Raji, Pickett, Worthy, Daniels locks. Jones, Wynn easy cuts. Guy hasn't shown much, and since eligible for PS, put him there, give another year to develop. Coaches seem to like CJ Wilson as a base/run-stuffing DE, so he makes it. With two rookies on the DL and Daniels really only able to be a designated inside rusher, warrants keeping 7. Muir, Merling have shown enough to keep, offer strong rotation. If none of the 7 get injured, guessing Neal replaces Merling upon his return, and Hargrove will replace Muir. Jolly unfortunately never given chance to factor into this equation.

LB (8): OLB's Matthews, Perry, Moses, ILB's Hawk, DJ Smith, Lattimore, Manning, Francois
Suspended: OLB Walden (1 game)
IR: ILB Bishop, OLB Zombo
Cut: OLB's So'oto, Jones
Comments: When Walden eligible to come back in week 2, guessing Packers will keep 9 LBs, make cut somewhere else on roster (my current prediction is Richardson at S) . Francois makes it as last LB because he can play both inside and outside. So'oto just hasn't shown anything, and Jones unimpressive to me. Zombo may be eligible for PUP, not sure. Otherwise, maybe worth putting on IR, giving him another shot next year. If NFLPA and NFL agree on allowing teams to bring back one player from IR, and if after surgery Packers determine Bishop could be healthy sometime later in the season, then he may be their choice to use this option on.

DB (10): CB's T. Williams, House, Hayward, Shields, Bush S's Woodson, Burnett, McMillian, MD Jennings, Richardson
Cut: CB's Ross, Merrill, Turner, S's Levine, Pellerin (PS)
Comments: CB Ross, S Levine in 2nd year have shown little. Among rookies, maybe Pellerin worth putting on PS. Supposedly, he can play S or CB. Richardson makes it as 10th DB. But Packers could just as easily put him on PS in week 2 to make room for bringing back Walden, bumping Pellerin off. Sure hoping House's shoulder heals enough next couple of weeks for him to play with a harness. Because if it doesn't, he supposedly would need surgery, likely then go on IR, and compete with Bishop as the player to designate for bringing back later in the season.

SPECIAL TEAMS

(3): Crosby, Masthay, Goode
Comments: Already decided.

They may keep Jones, he can play inside and out and is a good special team player.
They may cut Saine and keep Gurley again a special team move.
They will keep Datko, the rest of the leaque is desperate for o-line man, he will never make it through waviers.
MM says Ross is in the running to be one of thier starting CB, I do not think they will cut him.
Taylor is gone. If they need another tackle they will move Lang CDS to Langs spot.

Of course any injurry will scramble things a bit.
The Packers will cut Jennings he just been on the bubble to long. The will also cut Rodgers becouse everyone knows former Jeff Tedford QB's are always busts.
Also, I like Harrell the player but he is no QB in my mind. That throw away pass against the Browns that almost was picked off showed his arm strength is not there. McGinn pretty much says in article today he would be unable to make throws in wet, cold and snow. We won't win the SB without AR so either aquire a guy or go with Colemann and dump Harrell.
You could clearly work for a political campaign the way you take a sound bite out of context and turn it into something crude/dirty. I know if you only use part of the post you can get ur mind in the gutter but I was talking about his arm strength. He is well liked by teammates and he isn't beating up any girlfriends so I suspect he is a good teammate. That said would you trust him if AR was out 3-4 weeks to win 1/2 his starts? Not me.
Just for a little background the Palm Beach Post had an article about the process the Dolphins are using to build their 53. I'd assume there's a chance the Packers use the same process

Deciding Dolphins roster requires lively debate from coaches
palmbeachpost.com

By Ben Volin on Sunday, August 19th, 2012

At weekly personnel meetings, Philbin has the two coordinators – Coyle and offensive boss Mike Sherman – rank the players on his unit, 1 to 44. Then Philbin asks the position coaches to rank the players at their position. Sometimes, Philbin asks the coaches to make a mock 53-man roster by ranking players 1-25 on both sides of the ball (plus the kicker, punter and long snapper).

When the rankings are complete, the arguing begins. The coaches debate each others’ lists, with Philbin and Ireland serving as the tiebreakers, and by the end of the meeting, the Dolphins have their new depth chart for the week.

Philbin said that he and his staff already have had four such personnel meetings, the first one in June, a little earlier than usual.

Philbin said he wants his staff to take the initiative in lobbying for the players they think are best.

“I told the coaches, they are the head coaches of their position,” Philbin said. “You’re here to evaluate on the productivity of your players, so don’t wait for me to tell you what to do.”

Philbin said he wants his coaches to rely more on their instincts than on practice stats.

“I’m not interested in a bunch of stats – ‘He graded out at 82 percent in this scrimmage, and was 76 percent in this scrimmage,’ ” Philbin said. “Can the guy play? Do you want to coach the guy? Do you want him on your team? Do you trust him? That’s what I look at.” continue

And DD has done what, specifically, so far? I can remember one pass thrown his way . . . the 4th down try . . . and there was zero separation. Just sayin . . .

I think the 40 receptions and 450 yards in 2011 earned him strong consideration to be the #5 WR. Especially considering the contenders to unseat him have shown very little.
I agree that he is the clear #6 and another team would grab him, but the thing about Boykin is that he's not an incredibly talented WR that would be a terrible loss. His best attributes are his solid route running (and ability to adjust) and very reliable hands. He's not a speedster and he's not exceptionally strong/physical or tall so to me there's not really niche that he offers. Borel is very athletic and is a former QB and Gurley is tall and can jump, Boykin has reliable hands and is a good route runner. He's a good guy to develop as a #5, but I absolutely think you can find another Boykin in the draft next year.
From Peter King at MMQB:

"I think the other thing I noticed is how many teams are in wide receiver trouble. Miami's in the biggest trouble. Seattle's in trouble. San Diego's thin. The Jets, especially without a banged-up Santonio Holmes being able to get on the field, could use help. The Rams are incredibly green, except for the slot (Danny Amendola) and whatever Steve Smith, formerly of the Giants and Eagles, has left."

Plenty of vultures will be flying over Lambeau field looking for scraps...

I'm confused. I thought Jones was going to the Brownies in exchange for Colt McCoy and Joe Thomas. TT may have to throw in J. Bush, though, to get Thomas. Cool

Back to Donald Driver. I love the guy and what he has done for the Packers. He is a HOF Packer for sure. But the NFL is all about production, and I thought DD was a non-factor last year at a very visible (for the Pack especially) position. Then the Gints covered him with a LB in that fiasco of a game in January and I came away thinking we need younger blood behind Jennings and Nelson. If DD sticks I pray he proves me wrong. I just hate to lose a young talent like Gurley/Borel/Boykins to keep an old and non-productive one, even as proven-in-the-past as DD is.
Demovsky
Gurley seemed to come up with most of those 50-50 balls last summer. Now it's, we'll, 50-50.

Silverstein
Gurley fails to come up with deep ball from Harrell that Hayward picks off. Gurley has to get to that ball.

Wilde
Nice INT by Casey Hayward on deep sideline pass from Harrell to Gurley. Went up and got it against bigger WR

Not sure what the deal is with Gurley in camp this year. Hayward has done this to him a few times in practice. I would feel better having DD on the 53 instead of Gurley if it came down to one or the other.

What production have you seen from any of the youngsters ?

So far, its all potential and lots of hand-waving but none of them has done squat in practice / games to jump up and earn a spot on a Championship roster

Driver's continued presence is a testament to his current talent and an indictment of theirs...The Packers know what they are doing.
