I was just perusing Acme Packing Co's 53 prediction when I read this:

Also, two contributors cut J’Mon Moore, in part because of comments on the broadcast last night where James Lofton noticed his tendency to leave his mouthpiece out on running plays.

Can anyone verify this? That's a really dumb tell. If Lofton is seeing this from the booth no doubt defenses are picking up on this. This kid likely needs some time on the PS.

THAT IS GOOFY!

After now watching all four Pre-Season games, here's my projection on where Packers will be after cutdown tomorrow (by 4 PM ET) to final 53, and 10 on Practice Squad Sunday. Welcome your thoughts!

OFFENSE

QB (3)
Keep: Rodgers (34), Kizer, Boyle
Comments: I think Gutekunst made right call to trade Hundley, go with Kizer and Boyle. Both last night showed they need more development. But both also showed great potential, represent much higher upside than Hundley. Neither may be ready to win games this year if Rodgers goes down, would still have preferred a true veteran as a #2. But another year of Hundley would have been painful. Appears Packers will keep Boyle on 53 versus exposing to Practice Squad (PS). I think that's the smart play so as not to repeat what happened with Taysom Hill last year.

RB (3)
Keep: HB's Williams, Montgomery, FB Ripkowski
Suspended (first two games): Jones
Cut: HB Bouagnon, Daniels, Hill, FB Kerridge
Practice Squad: Mays
Comments: Mays didn't play in any Pre-Season games, so see no way he makes the 53. Outside chance Packers cut Ripkowski, go with no FB -- and then maybe a third HB or a fourth TE. But for now think they keep him, go with two healthy HBs, wait for Jones to return Game 3 after suspension.

WR (7)
Keep: Adams, Cobb, Allison, Moore (D4), Valdes-Scantling (D5C), St. Brown (D6), Davis
Cut: Jennings, Lewis
PS: Kumerow, Yancey
Comments: Though Davis did nothing great last night, recent comments by both Zook and McCarthy indicate they want him as their return man. So he gets 7th WR slot. Kumerow had this team made, and maybe still does, but his current shoulder injury (severity unknown) and significant injury history with the Bengals allows St. Brown and the potential he represents to take that 6th slot. Hoping Kumerow eligible (again) for PS. Giving Yancey another year on PS as well, but actually believe Packers will pick someone up from another team to use that PS spot for, either at WR or another position.

TE (3)
Keep: Graham (31), Lewis (34), Tonyan
Cut: Kendricks (30), Rader, Smith
PS: Byrd
Comments: Had planned to keep Tonyan on PS, but has shown too much potential, thinks he makes 53 over Kendricks, who has again underwhelmed. Allows Byrd to take that PS slot.

OL (9)
Keep: OT's Bakhtiari, Bulaga, Murphy, Spriggs G's Taylor, McCray, Patrick, Pankey, C Linsley
Cut: OT Bell, C's Day, Davis
PS: OT Light, G Amichia
DNR (Did Not Report): Madison (D5A)
Comments: Murphy's ankle injury (severity unknown) and poor play at Oakland last week makes his status very shaky. Could see Packers putting him on Injured Reserve (IR), or possibly cutting him outright. But assuming his ankle isn't serious, will keep him for now. Spriggs is playing better, hoping he continues that trend upwards. Just not impressed with Bell at OT or G, giving that last spot to Pankey, who can also play both those positions.

DEFENSE

DL (5)
Keep: Daniels, Clark, Wilkerson, Lowry, Adams
Cut: Lancaster, Sheehy, Mbu
PS: Looney (D7A)
Comments: Again, top 5 clear, any of the last 4 could end up on PS. Giving that spot to the draft choice for now.

LB (9)
Keep: OLB's Matthews (31), Perry, Gilbert, Fackrell, Biegel, ILBs Martinez, Burks (D3), Thomas, Morrison
Cut: OLB Odom, Hughes, ILBs Hearns, Porter, Crawford
PS: OLB Donnerson (D7C), Martini
Injured Reserve: ILB Ryan
Comments: Trade for Morrison provides a young veteran run-stopper at ILB, which is also primarily what Martinez provides. Burks and Thomas more coverage ILBs. Still don't know severity of Burks' shoulder injury. Fackrell and Biegel had quiet Pre-Seasons, but since we don't have better right now they both make the 53. Lots of folks like rookie Martini at ILB, but think Morrison took his spot and Packers can keep Martini on PS along with 7th round pick OLB Donnerson. Odom did nothing to warrant a spot, bit of a disappointment.

DB (11)
Keep: CBs King, Williams (35), Alexander (D1), Jackson (D2), House, Goodson, S's Clinton-Dix, Brice, Jones, Rollins, Greene
Cut: CB's Brown, Waters, S's Whitehead, Evans
PS: CB Hawkins
Comments: Love our top 5 CBs and Goodson I thought showed well overall in games, and his Special Teams ability gives him a 6th CB slot. Slight surprise in keeping Greene over Whitehead, but Greene has flashed last couple of games. Could just as easily though stash him on PS, go with an extra RB, TE, etc. Rollins did nothing great but guessing they feel worth holding onto as they may feel he still has upside. Hawkins didn't play well at all last few games, but with his speed Packers may believe he can still development further.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Keep: PK Crosby (33), P Scott (D5B), LS Triner
Cut: LS Bradley (D7B)
Comments: Scott absolutely killed it in KC last night. Exciting. Triner seems to have ever so slightly edged out 7th round pick Bradley.

THAT IS GOOFY!

That's an easy fix, too bad that's not his only prob.

McCarthy quoted over at JSO saying they want production over potential at WR. Said they’ve learned their lesson on that.

Ghost of one Jeffrey F. Janis still haunts.

I think Kumerow makes the 53. He’s ready. Rodgers likes him. Kind of the bottom line. The rooks aren’t. One of them goes to the PS, and if he doesn’t make it through waivers, so be it.

Reporters are making too much of Kumerow’s injury. It didn’t suddenly become serious just because it’s cutdown time.

My candidate for the PS squad: J’mon Moore. The drops aren’t a new or temporary thing for him. He’s been dropping them his entire college career.

Can it be fixed? Of course. Should productive football players who outplayed him all camp be exposed to waivers in the meantime, just because he was drafted ahead of them?  No way.

100% agree

If you’re keeping the best 3, Tonyan has to be one of them. I think Kendricks has some trade value but I also wouldn’t be shocked to see GB keep 4.

I think they will, and should, keep 4.    I don't see the point of keeping a less talented player at a different position.

Keep the talent we have.  If / when injury makes us thin at the position we cut, there will be plenty of options on practice squads across the league that would equal the talent of whomever was cut to make room for our 4th TE.

All three rookie wideouts ooze upside and I wouldn't risk exposing them to waivers. Move that makes the most sense to me is attempting to move Kumerow to the PS. If another team wants him on their 53, I could live with that.

The one who really should walk is Davis.  I’ve been assuming they were keeping him for ST’s, but if it’s true they are shopping him, I consider that good news. His value as a returner is overstated, IMO, and I kinda thought that was the bonus we were getting with Alexander.

Jaire wants the ball. Give it to him.

Kumerow has splashed in Traning camp for 3 straight years. Kumerow has gotten injured in Training Camp for 3 straight years.. Gotta be available. The upside on the rookies to too great to risk cutting them.

I am not impressed with our run game and our run defense. The RBs looked average at best and the Dline looks weak. Perhaps it’s all due to backups and vanilla game plan. At least I hope so.

On another note, MM looked a bit pissed in last nights presser. Maybe he agrees with me?

I’m surprised you feel that way, Patrick.  I actually think our running game this year could be the most solid we’ve had in a long time.  Jones/Williams/Monty is looking like a formidable cadre.  You’re Right in that the preseason games haven’t had a lot of explosive runs,  but i do think you chalk some of that up to vanilla schemes, 2nd, 3rd team OLinemen, etc.  Plus, if you tally the runs vs. passes in our preseason games, it’s kind of amazing how many more pass plays we had.  Guessing that’s because the coaches felt they knew what we had in the run game, but really wanted to test the rookie WR’s to see if they are for real (See J’Mon Moore) ... and backup qb’s to see how they meshed with the WR’s.

I agree...keep purging Teddy's draft reaches and roster dead weight

Ok, we let go of Odom, Donnerson and Biegel. I am just spitballing here but it almost seems like Gute expected Mack to be a Packer, and made the moves to clear out the OLB,s in anticipation. I know that these guys are not exactly all pro but who else do we have ? Why else thin out the position if another player was not expected to sign. And it sure is thin now.

Are those 3 guys any better than someone they can find on the street right now? Those are the talent level of guys that sit on practice squads all over the league. Based on what he's shown in games, I'd have been fine with moving on from Mackrell as well.

Because they all suck.

True that.

still, that position is thinner than my wallet after my last divorce.

Friggin' Gutenchrist...blowing up my predictions...
There was some surprises with the IR designations, but no way we could know what their condition/prognosis were. Don't know what to think of Rollins going to IR; is he really worth keeping another year, could an injury settlement be in the future, what? His salary shouldn't be a concern (1.2M).

Bigger surprises (kept) were only 2 RB, plus we don't know Monty's availability, Crawford at LB, and Whitehead and Greene at S; and the release of Biegel.
Kendricks making the roster, and the cuts of Ripper, Pankey, Goodson, and Evans are mildly surprising.

Oh well. Maybe I'll get a little redemption with PS players, when Jones becomes eligible, and/or who may be IR-DTR...

Its a weird roster.

Ah the mystery of the cutdown roster; expect it to look different on Thursday!  The one I ponder most about is Moore.  He has frightening ability and stone hands.  In my lifetime I have seen many of these "soul crushers"  going way back Homer Jones more recently Corey Bradford and now Ja Mon.  Maybe he proves me wrong and even excellent receivers drop an important pass (Think Jordy in the Buffalo game with a potential 94 yard game winner) but I just don't see the necessary attitude to improve.  Time will tell and I hope I have to eat a lot of crow so  my order on Amazon for  spicy crow seasoning is still pending!!
