It's like holding onto a pair of tightie whities for 25 years.

You call holding on to a DC too long and having a crappy backup QB a "metric ton of evidence" to incompetence?

You know the defense is half of the team right?  Plus, you forgot the main thing I have an issue with, his coaching staff.  Go ahead and reel off those wunderkind.

Comparing MM to Belichek and Lombardi.  Okay.

Oh for heaven’s sake, Henry.   I wasn’t comparing MM and Lombardi.    It was simply an amusing perspective-giving anecdote about how some fans find fault with even the best of coaches.  Drink a beer or twelve, will ya?

Just saw on Twitter that apparently we’re shopping Cobb. Clearing space for Rodgers or possibly a new pass rusher?

Not sure who takes his place? Kumerow? Allison?

geez I just saw on that salary cap site, we would gain 9m to cut him outright...he's getting paid 12m this year...bravo for him.

My guess after last night is they keep both Hundley and Kizer and attempt to sneak Boyle through to the PS. Think he didn't play last night because the team was afraid he'd put something good on tape.

My updated view after three pre-season games. As always, welcome your thoughts.

OFFENSE

QB (3)
Keep: Rodgers (34), Kizer, Boyle
Cut: Hundley
Comments: Hundley marginally better than last year, but that's not saying a lot. Very impressed with Kizer. Bigger. Much stronger arm. His accuracy has been a real surprise. He stands in the pocket better. And he has so much more upside. Once he gets to know this offense and the benefit of more of McCarthy's coaching he'll be that much better. Boyle showed so well in the first two pre-season games that I think they need to make room to groom him on the 53, otherwise I think the odds of another team grabbing him off our Practice Squad -- like Taysom Hill last year -- are high. He seems to have that "it" factor that makes him worth keeping.

RB (3)
Keep: HB's Williams, Montgomery, FB Ripkowski
Suspended: Jones
Cut: HB Bouagnon, Daniels, Hill, FB Kerridge
Practice Squad: Mays
Comments: I think the Packers go with only 3 RBs to start the season, wait for Jones to return Game 3. Can always pull Mays up off the Practice Squad. We haven't seen enough of Mays to know if he's worth keeping or not. Williams, Jones fine, but Montgomery keeps getting nicked up. But they need to keep him for another year.

WR (7)
Keep: Adams, Cobb, Allison, Moore (D4), Valdes-Scantling (D5C), St. Brown (D6), Kumerow
Cut: Davis, Jennings, Lewis
PS: Yancey
Comments: Think we have 7 receivers worth keeping -- which doesn't include Davis, who I don't believe is worth a roster spot even though he may still be our best returner. All three rookies have shown they belong, Kumerow (assuming his shoulder injury isn't serious) can play, and Allison, despite his lack of speed, gets open and catches everything. Don't feel strongly about devoting a PS slot to Yancey, but for now he sticks around.

TE (3)
Keep: Graham (31), Lewis (34), Kendricks (30)
Cut: Byrd, Rader, Smith
PS: Tonyan
Comments: Graham and Lewis have looked nothing short of awesome. While it would not be a shock to see Kendricks cut and replaced by Tonyan, I think Tonyan can be stashed on the PS. Offers more upside than Byrd.

OL (9)
Keep: OT's Bakhtiari, Bulaga, Murphy, Spriggs G's Taylor, McCray, Patrick, Pankey, C Linsley
Cut: OT Bell, G Amichia, C Davis
PS: OT Light, C Day
DNR (Did Not Report): Madison (D5A)
Comments: Murphy was awful vs. the Raiders, but guessing he still sticks. Spriggs nothing great, but has improved his overall play and may still have upside. Bell looked terrible at both Tackle and Guard, so see no reason to keep. Patrick appears to have beaten out Day as the backup Center, can also play Guard, so he stays. Pankey has quietly shown well at both Tackle and Guard, makes it as the 9th OL. Amichia hasn't shown anything. Really sucks that Madison never reported (guessing he was rattled by the suicide of his college QB teammate). He may have emerged as our starting RG or third OT.

DEFENSE

DL (5)
Keep: Daniels, Clark, Wilkerson, Lowry, Adams
Cut: Lancaster, Sheehy, Mbu
PS: Looney (D7A)
Comments: No surprise on the five we keep. Adams looking like a good 3rd round pick. Packers may keep Sheehy or Lancaster over draft pick Looney for the PS.

LB (9)
Keep: OLB's Matthews (31), Perry, Gilbert, Fackrell, Biegel, Odom, ILBs Martinez, Burks (D3), Thomas
Cut: OLB Hughes, ILBs Hearns, Porter, Crawford
PS: OLB Donnerson (D7C), Martini
Injured Reserve: ILB Ryan
Comments: Holding our breath that Burks' shoulder injury isn't serious. Even if it's not, I'd add Navarro Bowman to this ILB corps. Thomas looks like a good player on the inside. On the outside, Gilbert the obvious #3, but Fackrell, Biegel and Odom have all been underwhelming. Could cut all 3, but can we find better anywhere? Donnerson and Martini have both flashed, so have them on the PS, but have either shown enough to warrant being on the 53?

DB (11)
Keep: CBs King, Williams (35), Alexander (D1), Jackson (D2), House, Goodson S's Clinton-Dix, Brice, Jones, Whitehead, Rollins
Cut: CB's Brown, Waters, Evans, Greene
PS: CB's Hawkins, Pipkins
Comments: King, Williams, Alexander, Jackson, House all looking good at CB. Biggest surprise for me has been Goodson, who like Jarrett Bush before him, I thought was a good Special Teams player who couldn't cover. But I think Goodson has looked very, very good the last two games -- and much better than either Hawkins or Pipkins. So I have the latter two going to the PS. Packers seem to really like Whitehead, so I think he's a lock for the fourth S slot. I have Rollins as a 5th, but he could easily be cut, is likely the 53rd ranked player of 53.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Keep: PK Crosby (33), P Scott (D5B), LS Bradley (D7B)
Cut: LS Triner
Comments: Scott a bit inconsistent, but overall looking good. Not sure who's winning between Bradley and Triner.

Not to mention, it seems Ty Montgomery is made of glass more often then not.

Monty needs a big year. To 1.) stay healthy 2.) be productive and find some role on this team. I really don't think it's at RB, he's going to get hurt. As a returner, he's fumbling. As a WR? I don't where he fits there either.

His contract is up at the end of the season.

I get why they did what they did with Monty to RB. But after drafting Jones, Williams, and Mays I figured they'd put him back at WR. His size and twitch seems a fit for the slot.

Just spitballing here, but why not cut Hundley. If he really is that bad and nobody wants him, he can still be available later without wasting a roster spot, he could be ending up in the limbo squad of arena football or something like that.

After listening to Guties last presser, It looks like Gute prefers the QB position. He said so in his last presser. But who would you rather keep on the 53, Kumerow or Kizer? It’s going to come down to that. So unless an unlikely trade happens we are stuck with three QB’s and lose a decent WR.

I think if Kizer had jumped Hundley on the depth chart they probably would cut BH, but the two are seemingly indistinguishable in terms of skill. I don’t know why they’re messing around with either guy. Put Boyle on the PS and acquire a veteran backup. Maybe Hundley is great in the meeting room, great, but if you can’t take the concepts from the meeting room and use it on the field then you’re pretty useless. Same with Kizer who has been less impressive than Taysom Hill at this point. Cut bait and get a reliable solution in there.

Hey Joe, I think you and the links are right. But I think it’s a wrong decision. I wish they would cut bait and look elsewhere. Heck, there will be better QB’s cut soon. Why not consider a veteran from another team after cut downs?

Packers feel like they've made a significant investment in Kizer and are unwilling to move on quite yet. Fits the pattern with the team (see: Fackrell, Kyler).

Cut Monty and Hundley. If Monty can't stay healthy we could use Bourgon and/or Mays to go with Williams... or maybe cut Monty after Jones comes back and resign Hundley. He'll probably still be available.

I feel bad for Monty in a way.  I think he's got the talent to play in the NFL but the Pack and this "he's a RB", when he ain't, ain't furthering his career at all.  Would he be constantly hurt if he was playing WR?  We'll never know.

Excellent.

As some of us pointed out months ago, until the 53 was set, Hundley was a potential trade asset. Having him in during OTAs and camp also probably helped Kizer and Boyle -- younger guy explaining stuff to the newbies while 12 conducts his graduate level work. Plus ensured Kizer knew that nothing was guaranteed for him.

After trading Brett Hundley to the Seahawks, the Packers plan to keep both DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle as backups on the 53-man roster barring anything unforeseen in Thursday's preseason finale, per a source.

Rob Demovsky, ESPN Staff Writer

Boyle has too much upside to lose and I like that move too.
