IMO, the difference is that an extension for Raji would be much more expensive, so it makes sense that TT would want to hold off for as long as possible. It gives him more time to decide if Raji is worth a huge investment.

Agreed, but it's quite possible that he's a dumbass.  I think in a physical sense he's potentially special - he closes on the ball like no DB I can remember in GB - but he may be a guy who gets fat and happy with a big deal.  I think Ted just wants to see him perform for 8-9 games and he'll get done.

..agree, in addition Raji has displayed an inconsistent "motor". Looks like "top 10" $ one game, but not the next.

Good for Burnett, hope they get the deal done quickly.

Regarding Shields and Raji: Shields had a rough 2011, then in 2012 House was actually playing as the starter until getting injured in the pre-season. While Shields played well down the stretch in 2012 he did (I think) miss several games mid season due to an ankle injury. So, TT is likely waiting to see what he can do in 2013 and if he can stay healthy before inking him to a new deal. Smart on TT's part.

Raji, as I read earlier today somewhere, has been all over the roadmap, very different years in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He has played a ton of snaps each year though. But, there may be concerns he might throttle back once he gats a big deal. So TT again could be looking for more maturity and consistency before doing a new deal. Again, a good move for TT to wait.

Both have indicated they want to stay in GB. So, for 2013 they have to earn the right to stay with new deals.

Burnett is definitely worthy, and he's young.

Raji is wait and see, but if you consider DL that will likely be on the roster next year (packerupdate has an excellent post on this), it would be difficult to let him go.

Burnett is a guy who has been largely available over the last couple of years and therefore adds stability. Not to mention decent performance.

These are the guys that are going to get extensions.

B'boy789's comment applies here as well. Jones = available and production. Neal = not so much.

We shouldn't be too quick to dismiss Raji, IMO. Inconsistencies aside, Pickett's not going to play much longer. I can't judge Neal's availability (still) or even if he may "switch" positions. Beyond Jones potential development, we just don't have another stud to play on the end or inside. I won't say he is a lock to get extended, but I will say he has the best chance of anyone along the D-line.

As much as losing Cullen Jenkins in 2011 affected our DL, I hope we don't make the same mistake and let Raji walk.  But I guess I'll trust Ted & Mike.  Maybe Raji came in to OTA's out of shape and they want to motivate him.

Don't get my wrong, I'm all for keeping Burnett.

Also, I want to say here and now WATCH DAVON HOUSE!  I told my son I thought the kid was a diamond in the rough before we went to see our first game at Lambeau last year, in which DH blocked that Jacksonville punt that we recovered for a TD.  Play of the game, IMHO, in a game which we could have lost due to lackluster play and missed kicks by Mason "Crooner Bing" Crosby.

I would have held out for $24.8M.  Gotta have some money to tip your waitress at Applebees!

Packers traded up to grab Morgan Burnett in the 3rd round, jumping just ahead of the safety-needy bears

bears landed S Major Wright instead...LB.Navorro Bowman and Saints TE Jimmy Graham were still on the board at that time; very glad neither of them ended up in the Windy City

What would be a fair contract for both sides?

Lets get this one done soon, then another one or two of the guys with expiring contracts shortly thereafter.

Packer Update was pretty darn close.

Seems like a very fair contract, and if Burnett becomes a Pro Bowl caliber safety, this will be yet another bargain for the Packers. The more you see Ted operate, the more you still can't figure out the Hawk contract.

This is a classic TT type move.  Sign a player on the upswing before they hit the open market.  While Burnett isn't a dominant player, he's certainly a guy that is reliable and continues to improve.

As for the Raji and Shields discussion, I think both players are a risk from the standpoint of personal motivation.   Raji is the more difficult guy to replace because of his size/ability, but it's been well understood that at times he does not play up to talent.   Shields is sort of the same thing.   He's shown flashes of being really good but the consistency hasn't been there.

It will be interesting to see where they end up on both of those guys

When you factor in the last year of his rookie deal at $1.3M, this essentially becomes a 5yr deal worth about $5.2M per year. FWIW, PFF said his play last year was valued at $4.6M per year, so those numbers line up closely.

Also, ESPN MKE pointed out that Butler, Sharper and Collins all made their first Pro Bowls in Year 4. Something to watch.

I like this signing.  He's done nothing but improve since he came to GB.  I have to believe Raji is next in line.  Shields?  I just get the feeling he'll be playing elsewhere next season.

That would be a dream from heaven

This is a pretty talented group of DB's when you also consider both Traman Williams and House should come into TC and into the season fairly healthy. That should allow some very good competition at CB.

While it's hard to put alot of pressure on a rookie like Datone Jones, when you consider his pass rushing ability plus a healthy Nick Perry, Mike Neal who can now be available 16 games, ??? Johnny Jolly plus Raji in a contract year...

If GB generates the kind of pass rush they should, it could be a banner year for our DB's including Burnett who would be on the receiving side of some very ill-advised throws.

Tramon will be 31 entering the final year of his current deal in 2014. $9.5 million cap hit with $2 million in dead money. Unless House can't show the ability to stay on the field I don't see GB breaking up House, Hayward, and Shields as the core group of DB's for the next 4-5 years. IMO Tramon is the guy who's time in GB is coming to a close.

That's the part that was missing last year, the plethora of turnovers. MM said he "wouldn't play keep away" on offense, but take away makes all the difference on D
