What I took away from the game was it was a low intensity performance by both teams. It looked as though Cobb was calling fair catches as the ball left the pointers foot.
I think the Packers were playing not to get hurt, especially after Bishops injury.
I do not know who the Packers had in the game on defense for that last Chargers TD drive but they were playing with a Pro Bowl level of effort. Or maybe the players were simply bad.
It was a boring sloppy preseason game.
afew fumbles, afew dropped third down passes (by guys who wont make it anyway),and a blown coverage on a 3rd and 17 (also by some slappys) other then that some nice things to look at from the game...but it all comes down to Bishop thats gonna be a huge exam this morning...

-Harrell def had some horrible throws but also had some drops as i mentioned, shed the pocket way too early.no doubt needs to play better

-what a great battle between Genus/Draheim/Dominguez....genus was his usual steady self, draheim had acouple poor series but over all looked good,Dominguez cant afford to miss another game......Datko is a solid practice squad player

-Worthy was so-so,nice to see merling putting up a fight(flashed some in family night as well),still not sure what to make of Wilson and Wynn they got to cut on the juice

-is it a given that Walden will atleast be released for week 1 since the suspension and the contract would be guaranteed for season if hes on the roster????

-Perry looks good very good with his hands,Moses is close to a lock,So'oto needs to play in 1st half vs better comp.

-it was always a 2 man comp for the spot opposite 38..House/Shields...Bush's ball skills are just to poor for him to be everydown and then with sheilds hurt it was davons for the taking hope this injury is not serious..opens the door back up for sam

-safeties were bad..poor games by all

-guess at the practice squad after scrimmage/game 1

Coleman QB
Bennett RB
Gurley WR
Moss/Boykin WR
Loser of OL battle
Datko OT
Manning LB
Ross CB
+++++

Perry looked like a legit pass rusher. 1 sack and 1 hold call.

House had a great game.. His job to lose.

Negs...

Safety play was pathetic.

Young WR's didn't impress.

Harell didn't look great, but I will give him a pass because of the tackle play.

Bingo. Just about any positives are wiped out because of the Bishop and House injuries. Awful to have to worry about that stuff this early, let's just hope these aren't too long term.
Negatives:

- Starks really was shaky. Not a good sign with no Ryan Grant on the team.

- Other than Evan Dietrich Smith, it didn't look like there was a single NFL caliber player among the backup offensive line.

- James Jones drop. Would have been overturned by penalty, but still, you've got to help your QB out.

Positives

+ Cobb. But frankly, that's not a surprise. If he gets hurt, it will be a pretty big loss to overcome.

+ I was mentally ready to see a poor performance. I figured between having to start Herb Taylor at LT and travelling cross country this early in camp, we would not see the Pack at their best.
IMHO, I think the offense and defense need to be 'fixed'.
Before our score before halftime, ARod and Harrell combined were something like 3 completions, 20 yards, and an INT. You can generate more power by sneezing.

I was taken aback by Harell's performance. I thought he would be better. There were WR drops, but his accuracy suffers at anything over 20 yards. I seriously wouldn't be surprised to see Coleman pass him on the depth chart ala' Flynn/Brohm.
The only thing Starks did was pass protect.
Taylor and Datko definitely aren't ready to be starters, but neither was atrocious.
It was harder for me to guage the defense overall, but there were a few players that stood out. Levine looks like a football player, and I think House is ready to play. Perry and Worthy are the real deal. Bush stood out too, but for the wrong reasons.
Lastly, no excuses for the fumbles, especially on KO's. I don't care how hard a returner gets hit; even if their helmet is 10 yards behind them with their head still in it, he better hang on to the ball. Ditto for Ray Charles "losing it in the sun". Charger returners didn't have that problem.
Harrell didn't suck. He missed a few throws but the OL didn't help him much and there were some balls dropped that should have been caught.

@BobMcGinn
Some scouts cut #Packers' O a great deal of slack for lousy showing. Pointed out almost nobody game-plans for exhib., especially Wk. 1.
Dezman Moses! makes the team for STs if nothing else. Right before the half did you see him drive his blocker into the returner for the tackle? I damn near jumped off my couch. naturally, the announcing morons had better things to talk about. I'm so glad I don't get MNF. and what's with calling a Thursday nite football game Monday Night Football? branding is sooo stupid. gruden is unbearable and torico is more interested in anything not football - what a kiss-ass. if my boy wasn't watching with me I woulda muted the broadcast.

House - hope he's alright. he's definitely taken the next step!

I'm praying for Bishop's knee... DJ Smith did not look very good last nite for some reason. Tyler ran with more authority than Starks.
Tough to gauge the performance of a defense or offense with so many players out.

Datko looked like a rookie but I think he has a chance on the PS.

House looked really good before his injury, especially in run support.

Bush looks lost in coverage but I have a bad feeling GB has plans to put him out there a lot this season.

Harrell looked better as the game went on.

Merrill (sp) can't play.

So'oto looked decent against scrubs.

Starks looked pretty bad.

The winner of the perceived Borel vs. Gurley camp battle won't matter at all. Probably best to keep 5 wr's and add a body elsewhere.

Perry looks like he might be a good one.

Did Worthy take all his plays off? He didn't stand out at all. Muir did show up at times though.

That's the problem with preseason games. We get excited about one player and down on others. The issue is the level of competition they are going against. Big difference between playing in the 1st quarter vs. the 3rd and 4th quarters.

**Not necessarily talking about Muir. Just competition in general that most of us fans lose sight of in the preseason.
Packer fans represented very well last night and at one point Rodgers was inciting the crowd during one of the many
" Go Pack Go ! " chants

The players have to enjoy hearing that in an opponents' stadium....and lots of grumbling from Chargerfan

I can't imagine Lambeau ever being 40% opposing fans
Some perspective... August 13th, 2011

quote:

(CLEVELAND) - Colt McCoy was sharp in his first preseason action of 2011, completing 9-of-10 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown to help the Cleveland Browns topple the Packers. The former Texas Longhorn capped his first drive -- an eight-play, 71-yard march -- with a 27-yard touchdown pass to receiver Josh Cribbs. He highlighted another scoring drive with a 37-yard pass to tight end Benjamin Watson. Watson finished with a pair of catches for 56 yards and Hey El-Ka-FFL: Peyton Hillis ran five times for 16 yards and a touchdown. The first-team offense undoubtedly left a good impression on new head coach Pat Shurmur, who replaced the fired Eric Mangini in January. The Browns defense played well under new coordinator, and former Green Bay assistant, Dick Jauron, forcing three fumbles and recovering one. The unit also had five sacks. After a three-and-out on his first series, Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers finished 6-for-8 passing for 74 yards and a touchdown. Running back Ryan Grant, who saw his first game action since being injured in the 2010 opener against Philadelphia, rushed three times for 13 yards. Randall Cobb led the Packers in receiving, catching three balls for 60 yards, including one for 28 yards. Defensive back Charles Woodson and tight end Jermichael Finley did not suit up for the defending champions. Mason Crosby knocked a 31-yard field goal attempt through the uprights and tight end Spencer Havner caught a three-yard pass from Matt Flynn to give the Packers a 17-14 halftime lead. In the second half, however, Titus Brown took a fumble return 43 yards for a touchdown, and Jeff Wolfert added a pair of field goals -- a 46-yard kick in the third quarter and a 44-yarder with 1:52 remaining to seal the win for the Browns.
GREEN BAY - 7 10 0 0 - 17
CLEVELAND - 7 7 10 3 - 27
1st - CLE - Josh Cribbs, 27-yard pass from Colt McCoy (Phil Dawson kick) CLEVELAND 7-0
1st - GB - Greg Jennings, 21-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers (Mason Crosby kick) TIED 7-7
2nd - CLE - Peyton Hillis, 3-yard run (Dawson kick) CLEVELAND 14-7
2nd - GB - Crosby, 31-yard field goal CLEVELAND 14-10
2nd - GB - Spencer Havner, 3-yard pass from Matt Flynn (Crosby kick) GREEN BAY 17-14
3rd - CLE - Jeff Wollert, 46-yard field goal TIED 17-17
3rd - CLE - Titus Brown, 43-yard fumble return (Wolfert kick) CLEVELAND 24-17
4th - CLE - Wollert, 44-yard field goal CLEVELAND 27-17
Positives:

- Cobb had some really good catches
- Thought Perry had a solid showing. He looked really strong against the run and I liked how he moved in coverage
- Saw some good things from Worthy. It's going to take some adjustment for him I think, but he showed some quickness and power
- House looked really strong, as did Williams. House covered Malcolm Floyd really well...that's a big positive considering all the big receivers in our division. I liked some of the things I saw from Hayward also. He had some rough plays, but he looked like he belonged.
- DJ Smith had a strong showing. He flew all over the field.
- We got a little bit clearer picture of who can play and who can't IMO.
- Loved what I saw from Coleman. He needs to improve his accuracy, but his passes had a lot of zip, he looked decisive, and honestly I thought he looked better than Matt Flynn did as a rookie.
- Loved the energy and effort from Muir and Neal.

Negatives:

- I would never feel comfortable with Herb Taylor starting at Tackle for us. Datko either.
- Harrell had some good throws, but he had some really bad ones. He says his arm is stronger and his passes did seem to have more zip, but he still had to float the longer passes. He may have the offense down and he may be a smart guy, but what good are you if you can't get the ball where it needs to go.
- I thought Starks was running way too high. He was decisive and hit the hole well, but he got stood up on a couple different plays because he had ZERO leverage. He needs to lower that shoulder.
- I knew there would be some tough moments with MD Jennings. I hope he improves before the Saints game because Jimmy Graham will eat his lunch.

Not to mention Vernon Davis in week 1. I would imagine Woody might have to cover those guys somehow though.
But, it seems that they look good in practice, and all the bad things show up during the games,so I think they need these games against real opponents instead of against the same guys every day. Players get hurt in practice too. I think the Deadskins lost somone for the season from injury in practice.
Appreciate the replies, just disagree they are necessary. Make it 2 pre-season games at most.

If people are going to get hurt, make the game count, IMO. If some teams aren't ready, that's their problem.

The game has changed a lot since this kind of schedule was implemented.
Ding! Correct again.

The owners love receiving full pay for a product that sucks on the field (Pre-season)

They're trying to do something about it while not losing any of the money which is why 18 regular season and 2 pre-season seems to be on the table.
If they go 18 I can see losing a lot of folks earlier in the season, especially those whose teams are out of the playoffs. Then you'll see empty seats, and TV ratings, merchandising, etc., all drop (which it has started to do already). Part of the NFL's appeal now is the seemingly do-or-die immediacy every week. With a 16-game schedule more teams are in the hunt longer, so more people stay tuned.

I'd favor one less preseason yuckfest and keep the 16-game season, and I know it won't happen cuz it would be the smarter thing to do. And the owners won't give up the $$$.
The NFL was really pretty clever on the preseason side

Instead of sticking themselves with the responsibity of selling an over-priced and over-supplied product, they pushed that onto the season ticket holders

page after page of cheeep tickets on craigs list is the ticket holders taking it in the shorts, meanwhile the clubs get full price

pass the buck, or in this case pass the loss
For just one year, every ticket holder and fan of every team should just boycott, take the hit and not sell their tickets, not go to the game and basically have no one at the preseason games. You can bet your ass with the owners taking a loss in concession sales for 4 weeks, they might encourage the league to make some changes.

Just a thought

We went to the preseason game planning to spend zero dollars on concessions. Brought our own food and water. In a moment of weakness at the start of the 3rd quarter I walked out to the beer stand to find that if you wanted an actual beer, (and not the ratpiss they sell as coors/bud ) - it would be $ 11 for an under-poured 12 oz tap.

That helped me to see the error of my ways and I went back to my seat empty handed. Dear NFL, ****-Q...
