Positive Pollies/Negative Nellies Packers vs Skins

About Franklin, Joe B mentioned that there were some packages with FRanklin they were expecting today.  My guess is that with such a nice game by Starks, why put that out on tape?  Save for later in season and catch em by surprise. 

 

Big picture positive, the Dline rotation is paying off big now and will later in season.

 

Negative for me continues to be the center postion, on all the negative run plays you can bet the farm on the reason why it was a negative play....EDS.

McCarthy has said before that they go with the hot hand. Starks was clearly the hot hand today. The most encouraging thing about Starks yards, IMO, was that they came on the edges. That was, and will continue to be, HUGE for keeping the pass rush down. The Tackles, despite a couple sacks, had a strong day again and their best efforts came in the run game. Don Barclay especially was good when run blocking.

As far as my "going for the throat" negative, I'm not advocating running up the score. Running the ball 3 times and punting only to put your Prevent D on the field is the kind of recipe that led to the Colts comeback from 2012. The game today went from 31-7 to 38-20 in a flash because the Prevent D was on the field too much. McCarthy realized it and they went back to shredding the D, but it just took a while. Running to close the game is fine and playing Bend/Don't Break D is fine, but I don't think it's good to play both at the same time. Gotta keep the foot on the gas with one area or the other. That's I'm saying.

For all the angst about the defense, when the game was competitive in the first half, they played very well.

+  Starks is faster than I thought. Once he got a head of steam up, he was hard to catch.

 

-  The one thing I was mad about was that McCarthy didn't let Rodgers go for the record. Come on - one freaking yard was all he needed!

 

MM said in his post game presser he wasn't aware of that record even being approached by Rodgers. He had no idea he even tied it. So hard to let AR go for something he knew nothing about.

Negs:   I only got to see the first 35 minutes of the game before I had to go to an anniversary party hosted by people who don't watch football.  Ugggghhh!!!!!

 

Positives:   Just happy the Pack got a win even though I couldn't see most of it.

If there are no injuries from today's game, I don't know how you can say anything negative about today's game.

 

James Starks, Jordy, James Jones, Cobb...wow. If this offensive line improves at all, Rodgers might have a better season than he did in 2011 when he won the MVP. 

Positives were many that have already been listed. 

 

Negatives were Lacy's injury but he may only miss one game, if that.  Biggest negative that could have major impact are the four sacks given up.  Can't keep letting Rodgers get hit that often.  If he goes down then ???

Biggest concern with Lacy is that he received a concussion at all. More likely to get another once you get one. And that would really suck given the first was was delivered by a freaking dumbass headhunter.

 

As far as I can tell, yesterday will likely result in "helmet to helmet" fines #5 and 6 for Meriweather. Should see another $100k fine along with a suspension. Possibly two games. This moron doesn't get it.

+ I like Starks, it was good to see him get a chance. Stepping out of my Zen Pajamas, I loved the blow he delivered to Merriwether. Instant Karma is a b**ch.

 

+ Being able to listen to the game on the net versus  my 93 lumina parked in the backyard...I felt less white trashy except for the Rheinlander and pork rinds...

Being the a-hole that I am, I was really friggen pissed off by all the Packers going over to this POS and patting his ass, gently stroking his arm, and giving sympathy to this "injured warrior" as they walked him across the field. This asswipe had put one of their teammates in the locker room with a cheap shot and then tried to do it the same thing to another one. Screw that noise.

 

I heard on the national ESPN radio feed that Rodgers/Starks numbers were the first time in history with 450+ yards passing and 125+ yards rushing in a game.

 

Also that yesterday's 3 QBs with 400+ yards passing w/o an interception was a first timer too.

 

You'd lose the farm.

They’ve come in with a lot of criticism recently but it’s only fair to recognize just how well the Packers’ offensive line played. They regularly dominated the Redskins at the point of attack, getting the kind of lateral movement that set up big cutback lanes for James Starks to reach the second level and make Washington pay. While the unit would pick up a +6.3 rushing grade, the star of the show was T.J. Lang (+4.8). Featuring a near-flawless display, he was perfect in pass protection and added some good work in the run game. Whether it was sealing at the line or getting to the second level (Q1, 13:08) he was a big part of the Packers breaking their 100-yard rusher drought.

Great for Starks to have that game, but I don't feel any different about him as a runner. He isn't very good. The league is filled with guys that have had good games. The consistency is and always was lacking with him. Hope to see Lacy back soon.

Lacy's the better back, but Starks' real problem with consistency is consistently being able to stay on the field. The talent really has never been the issue. 

I always thought his biggest problem on the field was his first two steps were slow, then he accelerated. The best backs have the ability to hit the hole at speed from step one. Meaning the Packers OL has to hold those blocks longer than they would for  a high quality back.

I am starting to see a pattern... When EDS blocks air, we score a TD..

EDS just made a fantastic line call on that score - the original play went to the left, but EDS whiffed on purpose to force Rodgers to his right where he had a better match-up

Why isn't EDS backing up & holding the center gap???

Not sure which was my favorite: Starks in midair, Lacy in midair, or RG3's helmet rolling oh so lonely around on the field... 

No- it's vision. Good running backs have the ability to see the hole, however small. It's an innate ability that is as rare as the QB that can read a defense, process the info, and anticipate the throw.

 

And just like QBs, there are lots of RBs who are athletic, lots who can throw. But the mind is either there, or it isn't. Starks doesn't see the play- he has little "feel". He has all the other tools- speed, strength, he can cut... but if the hole isn't smacking him in the forehead, he gets buried.

 

I think Lacy have that "it" factor- but we won't know for a while because he got cheap shotted by one of the dirtiest players in the NFL...

 

 

It's always been my impression of Starks that he's great at getting 4-8 yards but lacks the burst, moves, or power to do much at the second level.  Lacy has the ability to accelerate, punish the second level smaller guys, and not go down.  That kind of ability brings the safety down to try to stop him before he gets a head of steam.     

Here's another positive- Aaron Rodgers throws for 480 and 4 TDs and they let up on the pedal in the 4th, and no one cares. The talk was all about RGIII and his mechanics, Payton Manning and his 2-0 start, Chip Kelly, the coach in Tampa...

It's the quietest 480 and 4 TDs in NFL history. Yup, keep overlooking and underestimating... we like it like that.
