Somebody will have to go when Bak comes back, either an OL or maybe Benkert.  Whoever it is will go to practice squad.

Well, since the PS is over except for the crying, there's no better time to take my stab at this.
I really hope my cypherin' is correct, and I haven't forgotten anyone.

I just think they don't want to expose Benkert to waivers at this point.  Maybe when Bak comes back and most practice squads are set.  I also think we will see a couple of vet free agents on D. Maybe not right away but after week 1 when $$$$ are more flexible.

As an aside, the league is keeping the same PS rules as they had last year. Among them 16 players, including up to 6 with 2+ accrued seasons, and being able to protect 4 of them each week from other teams.
Incidentally, players that go on IR can return after 3 weeks, and there's no limit on how many players.

With this in mind, I think the Packers have a good chance to have some solid depth and developmental players, perhaps moreso than in recent years.
Players I'm looking for:
WR ESB
WR Begelton
OT Nijman
OL Braden
OL Van Lanen
OL Cronk
RB P Taylor
TE Kaufusi
CB Ento
CB Jean-Charles
CB Denmark
CB Farris
S Uphoff
S Gaines

I think most teams have their own version of Benkert right now that they want to develop. What some teams are lacking are a legit backup QB and Benkert isn't that.

My thinking on Benkert was that they need someone to run the scout team now that Love is primary backup. It sounds silly, but Love doesn't have time for that any longer, and I think MLF will want to get him as many reps as possible during practices.

I still haven’t gotten over the Marc Wilson release. That one devastated me. I thought he was the answer at QB.

And I thought shitberger was the 2nd coming of Paul Coffman. It happens brother. 😂

It only takes 1 injury to a QB to make Benkert that legit backup.  Be it a starter or a backup.  He is probably better and more experienced than many teams practice squad QB.

Just read whee Tim Boyle was injured today, a thumb injury to his right thumb.  It was cut and bleeding so he did not return to the game.  So there could be 1 chance for Benkert to be signed if Boyle's injury is long term.

I honestly had forgotten he ever was with the Pack in any fashion. Training Camp 1988, right in the heart of some of the suckiest years the Pack has ever had.

He's definitely more experienced. This is his 4th training camp. He's still a fringe roster/practice squad guy. I'm guessing that right now there's a total of 0 NFL GM's sitting on the edge of their seat waiting to see what the Packers do with him. Now if we are talking about a guy like Patrick Taylor that might get the attention of someone. I'm not sure that anyone else getting cut would get claimed quickly if at all.

When you have guys like Blake Bortles sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring, the name Benkert isn't getting tossed around in serious discussions.

BTW, on Boyle I thought I read something recently where the Lions were liking David Blough better after a couple of preseason games?

I had watched the Loins 1st game on a stream, and looked at some of the Detroit press last week to see how he was doing, and it wasn't pretty. I doubt he improved much this week.
I'm disappointed he didn't show better, especially with the opportunity available, but glad to know we didn't have to depend on him last year.

It will be a shame if the Packers use/waste a roster spot on Benkert. I mean, he's Kurt f'ing Benkert. The guy is a "dime a dozen" player in the NFL.  And he's a third stringer.  If another team wants Kurt f'ing Benkert, let that team have Kurt f'ing Benkert.  And then go find the next Kurt f'ing Benkert for the PS.

Kurt f’ing Benkert says “f you”, but you probably don’t give a fuck.

Oh frick, can we please just pull the plug on the ESB experiment? People, it didn’t work. Let it go! Ditto with Dexter boy. Move on. Nothing to see here.

Put Benkert on the PS.

I’d also put Jean-Charles there. He’s not ready for prime time.

Van Lanen I think might make the 53 though. Denmark might just too. He sure surprised me, considering I thought he was JAG.

And I hadn’t read much about this Wilborn guy, but he showed some good stuff too.

Man I’d hate to be one of these fringe kids. They’ve gotta be munching antacids and praying for good news over the next few days.

Don't see the team going with three quarterbacks. Just an indication of how far Sternberger has fallen that I haven't even seen him listed as a PS candidate. Dafney is easily a better player and I'll be surprised if he's not the fourth TE.

I'm hoping we can trade for one of the two punters the Rams have on their roster: longtime vet Johnny Dekker or Corey Bojorquez, an ex-Bill who yesterday kicked 67, 48 and 70 yard punts. LATimes story today hints that Rams will trade one.... Opie should be gone.

Zero chance Benkert makes the team.  He will be sent to the PS and if he gets claimed by someone they will just sign Bortles to the PS.  Remember, you can  sign up to 6 vets on the PS now.  They're not going to take up a roster spot for someone who will never suit up, not on a team this deep.

I'm thinking they should sign Bortles anyways.  He's not a horrible option and maybe he pulls a Rich Gannon and comes on later in his career.

They need legit vet back up options.

Yeah, I didn't get all the hype around Boyle. He's a JAG.

Benkert is a JAG. The only interesting Packers QB not named Rodgers for the past two years is #10. I guess you could add in the short stint by Bortles and James.

Stars of the preseason. Boy, Newman is looking like another late round OL gem.

Nice write up.  I wouldn't call Newman a late round gem.  He's a fourth rounder.  Those middle rounds are a great spot to pick up slobs.  Oline is one of the surest bets in the draft if you know what you're looking for.

Speaking of oline, that new cut block rule is going to be interesting.

Found on the internet: – Remember this name as the Packers build the practice squad next week: Stephen Denmark. He looked like the defense’s best cornerback on Saturday.

Former Bear. Fast.

I don't know.  Something rotten about him.
