I appreciate the Packers had many holes. However, Protect The Franchise was an extremely high priority for me. Rodgers came off his second collar bone injury. This year he had the knee injury. This year, Green Bay is 24th in sacks per game. For comparison, New England, with a statue at QB, is 5th.
Rodgers is 35. I think he is the best QB to ever lace them up.
So what level of priority did Brian Gutekunst have for protecting the franchise?
Here is a look at Packers offensive line personnel from 2017 to 2018. First, the rosters.
Offensive Linemen
2017 – 10
David Bakhtiari - LT
Lane Taylor - LG
Corey Linsley - C
*Jahri Evans - RG
Bryan Bulaga - RT
Jason Spriggs - RT
*Kyle Murphy - LT
*Don Barclay - G
Lucas Patrick - RG
Justin McCray – RT
Jahri Evans – signed April 2017. Unsigned for 2018 (he was 35).
Kyle Murphy – 6th round draft choice 2016. Placed on injury reserve 2018.
Don Barcley – undrafted free agent signed in 2012. Released with an injury settlement in October 2017.
2018 - 9
David Bakhtiari - LT
Bryan Bulaga - RT
Corey Linsley - C
Lane Taylor- LG
Justin McCray - RT
Jason Spriggs - RT
*Byron Bell – G/T
Lucas Patrick - RG
*Alex Light – G/T
Byron Bell – FA signed by Packers in 2018. Played for Dallas in 2017, but not resigned.
Alex Light – FA signing.
Next the draft. The Packers invested on a whole (read: one) offensive lineman in the 2018 draft. Cole Madison who never reported for personal reasons. So the Packers do not have three OL from 2017 and added two free agents for 2018. Not one offensive lineman added via the draft (I certainly do not blame the Packers for Cole Madison).
Gutekunst drafted three WR’s, a long snapper, and a punter. I cannot conceive of a his approach. MUCH more priority should have been given to offensive line. Something along the lines of one less WR and one or the other of punter and long snapper where the Packers then draft two guards and a tackle – three offensive linemen instead of one.
Gutekunst gets an F in my book. I see no way to justify his astonishing disregard for protecting the franchise.
