Ok, so I used to be a huge Brewers fan back in the 70s and 80s and 90s and MLB guy too.  But then for a long time I got down on MLB and the Brewers.  I would usually check box scores for daily updates.  But never read much or watched them unless I was back home in La Crosse.  Yet, the last couple seasons I began following them a little more and then last year unexpectedly after Braun's deceitful drug debacle, I found myself regaining some of the genuine interest I once had.  Perhaps, because I sensed that with Braun and his dishonesty, MLB and its players finally got the "wake-up call" and were sick of all bad press and other shady issues that have plagued MLB for decades.  So this year I got myself a MLB online account and I listen to the Brewer broadcasts as much as I can.  I had forgotten how good of an announcer Bob Uecker has been and I regret that I didn't sign up to listen years ago.  As Milwaukee Brewer fans, we really have been treated to hearing one of the best there has ever been.  This past week I got to hear Daryl Hamilton, Craig Counsel and Jerry Augustine (who I used to ice-down his shoulder and elbow after he pitched games for UWL back in the 70s).

So...since I have been relatively out of touch.  I cannot for sure say, but it sounds and appears to me that this year's Milwaukee Brewers are one of the best teams of recent memory and maybe even better.  At least so far and at this point of the season.  17 games over .500 and the best record in MLB near the end of June.  Best road record too.  Their lineup is solid with almost no glaring weaknesses.  The starting pitchers and their Bullpen is stalwart as well.  It seems that any or all players in their lineup can contribute positively at any given moment.  And maybe most important they seem to have some good chemistry brewing as well.

This past road-trip certainly showed us and the rest of MLB that the Brewers wont bow down to anyone or any team.  Sweeping the Rockies in convincing fashion.  Should have swept the D-Backs too.  Still, there is a long ways to go.  The Cards, Reds and others still have to be dealt with.  Yet this Brewers team seems to be special.  And at some point in this season, hopefully playoff fever will catch fire.  Hopefully Roenicke can keep this group grounded and focused.  And I said before, I have to give a nod of acknowledgment to Doug Melvin for what he has done lately.

This afternoon I was at Coors Field.  Lots of proud Crew fans there.  Many stayed until the final out as Rox fans began leaving after the 7th.  It was good to see and hear them cheering as the last out was made.

I didn't miss those appearances and games.  But I will admit I did not follow them closely throughout those seasons.  I remember some of their wins and streaks too.

But this team seems to be a team that plays well together.  From top to bottom.  No C.C. to hitch their hopes to this season.

Just wanting to know how the Brewer Faithful rate them so far.  Or am I casting a bad omen?

1. K Rod scares the hell out of me. It's just like watching TOG. You always wonder what will go rong.

2. Braun's defense in right has not been as good as when he played left.

3. Lucroy is the best catcher in the NL.

4. Gomez has been outstanding so far. Legitimate MVP.

5. I hope they can win a pennant for A Ram before he retires.

I rate them below the 1982 team, but not far below.

Peralta has been fantastic.

Smith for Aoki has worked out well.

Davis stopped trying to pull everything.

Garza has underwhelmed.

I thought signing Loshe was a mistake.  I was wrong.

Scriekie Weenet has been very good at second.

Mark Reynolds plays much better defense than I ever thought he would.

Segura may not be the hitter he was last year (before the AS break), but he is still a controllable skilled SS.

The can score three runs on a passed ball with the pitcher at the plate.

Kinda sums it up, huh?

There was a late pop-up behind 2nd.  Weeks couldn't get to it and Herrera was off too.  But Gomez had to cover about 175' from where he was playing deep in CF and ended up making it a simple catch.  Pretty impressive.

Defense has been key, but I believe this team's success is attributed hugely to its pitching. Starters have been rock solid except for Estrada of late, and bullpen overall has been lights out. I don't have the stats, but it keeps you in a lot of games when your starters keep the opponent at 3 runs and under. That's how I believe they got off to their hot start, and now the  offense is starting to catch up and compensate for any slippage the staff may be having.
