Nice article this morning in the NFP featuring Datone Jones.

The best potential pass-rusher from the rookie crop might well be Green Bay first-rounder Datone Jones, former NFL end Chuck Smith feels.

Smith, who played most of his career in Atlanta, spends much of the offseason working with rookie and veteran defensive linemen, fine-tuning their pass-rush technique. His verdict from among the first-year players he tutored this spring? “Datone Jones is the most explosive guy of the bunch, (and he) really comes hard with that first blast and has natural (sack) instincts,” assessed Smith, who has been a defensive line coach with two NFL teams and also at the University of Tennessee.  “I think he’s the best rusher. He uses his hands really well, and uses his length to kind of create leverage. I’m really high on the guy.”

From the same article

It would be hyperbole to assign the term “alarmed,” but Green Bay officials and coaches were less than pleased that several of the club’s defensive linemen reported in less than optimum shape for minicamp work. . . .

Not a peep about Datone Jones signing

One guess is that they will announce it at the Shareholders meeting on 7/24

They announced Rodgers' new deal during the draft,  they may do something similar with Jones and introduce him at the shareholders meeting

Last time I checked there was a cluster of 8-9 guys picked 22nd-30 that were unsigned. Datone Jones was in the middle of that group. Might be a case of agents waiting for a couple of those deals to go final before the others fall into place.

It is fun knowing Minny has $7 million in cap room and still has to sign 3 1st rounder's. Good times!

He runs a camp for middle and high school age players too. I've seen the disposable yard signs in the landscaping of a couple of restaurants in Johns Creek, GA.

With the rookie slotting salary cap I'm sure the amounts of those deals for the remaining unsigned 1st rounders are already set up. There really is not much to negotiate for rookies anymore. And, with all the other draft picks signed the teams and players know whats left in the pool for them. Plus, the signing bonus part is pretty much established as well, as is guaranteed money based on past deals at those respective draft slots.

The only point of contention, as I understand it, is "offsetting" language in the contract. IOW, If the player gets cut before the contract expires and he signs with another team will his guaranteed salary be "offsett" or reduced by the amount recieved from the new team. Thats the hold up with these guys, teams want offsetting terms and the player/agent dont.

Expect to see Datone signed before camp starts as the issue gets worked out either one way or the other.

Datone will be there, no question about it. No concerns there

I'm just guessing the Packers will use the Shareholder meeting to announce it - give Datone a chance to see what this organization is all about and let him hear his first cheers at Lambeau Field

It would be even cooler if they trotted out the entire rookie class...

I'd make a joke if it wasn't tragic.

BTW, I was like 145th in my class----it got me preferred status at U.W.M.

I told Boris that you don’t have to give the people of TimesFour a reason to think about banning me or anything like that. If you ban somebody, you ban them to make the Board better…simple as that. I’m cool with that. I’m all about that. The people of TimesFour deserve to have a guy stay on topic. It’s simple as that. It goes further than that … If I can’t stay on topic, I can’t stay on topic. Glad to hear he's finding ways to improve himself. He's a guy we NEED to take the next step this year. Daniels is a good interior rusher, but Datone's size and athleticism allow for so much flexibility on the DL. He should be a 3 down player who players with power at the 5-tech and speed/quickness from the 3-tech.

It's time for some ROI.

Couldn't agree more. He really does need to take the next step up in his game, or he's destined to be Vonnie Holliday Part Deux.

Right now, I can't pick who is more underwhelming, Nick Perry or Datone Jones.

Yeah Vonnie had a nice career actually, not a superstar, but was always a positive contributor. We don't need Datone to be a superstar, we just need more consistency and reliability from him. We have stars in Clay and Peppers, we need Brett Kiesel-type grinders who just do their freakin job.

I'd really like to see GB use 3 DL more frequently

And with 5 DBs on the field the vast majority of the time, that means "only" 3 LBs

3-3-5 nickel instead of 2-4-5 nickel seems a better way to stuff the run

But that's just like my opinion, man
