To add, per Ryan Wood, who got a chance to talk to J. Alexander, Alexander immediately noticed Degura's work ethic. Like him, Degura goes after every single play again and again and again and dissects every damn thing about the play and what he could have done better. Per Alexander, he's almost obsessive about it.

He said it's rare to see that kind of initiative in a rookie. Who knows, just maybe we won't be wondering why this dude was a 3rd rounder after all.

I think this Draft and UDFA class may prove to be a very good one, when all things shake out and the draftees get to play, on a regular basis. I was upset with Gute for the picks he made, at first, pretty much like everyone else was, but now, I think his decisions were very sound ones and he drafted some playmakers.

I'd guess Josiah is why they only gave Tonyan a 1 yr deal.

Not so sure about that, they really play different positions despite being in the same room.

GB's maxxed cap needed a cheeep year from Tonyan in 2021, the last season they'll get him for less than he's worth.

Deguara's skill set is vital to the MLF offense, but he's really not a seam-buster like Tonyan/Sternberger. I've never seen an athletic profile like his though, he's down in the 4th percentile for height among tight ends.

Didn't matter when he took out 2 vikes with one block at the 2 minute mark

He's already done more than Turdburger and hasn't played a full NFL game yet.

TE Josiah Deguara - 2 targets, 1 catch, 12 yards, 0 TDs

And lets not forget his one block that put him out for the season.  He must learn to block and not get injured in the process.  If he can't stay on the field (and I think the jury is out on this), his versatility doesn't do anyone any good.

TE Jace Sternberger - 15 targets, 12 catches, 114 yards, 1 TD.

Of his 3 targets that he did not catch, one was a crossing route on which he was wide open that he dropped in plain sight of everyone.  Up to that point he was getting more opportunities.  I think that is what most base their opinion of him from last year.  I know I remember that over anything else he did last year.  Still, he has plenty of room to improve in his blocking.  And he has had injuries too.  Even last year he dressed for 12 games and he was lightly used.

These two did more for opening the door for Tonyan's good season than anything else by their absence.  And I think both Jace and Josiah have plenty to prove and improve upon this year.

He got hurt on special teams, BTW. His block against the Queens was sensational. Iā€™m crowning the motherfucker.

so is MLF and his position coach:

ā€œGetting Josiah on board with us, it just adds another dimension and brings the offense alive,ā€ tight ends coach Justin Outten said. ā€œGoing back to the Atlanta days with Matt (LaFleur) and being able to use the fullback role and put him in different spots, you see the success Juice (Kyle Juszczyk) has in San Francisco.

ā€œAs he progresses, I just feel like heā€™s going to open up some more things for us, just being as universal as he is. Excellent pro as far as being in the meeting room and having the right questions. Really good attitude throughout this whole process. Heā€™s a joy to be around. ā€

here's an article from the internet talking about how the 49ers use 21 personnel and beat teams with it whether running or passing. They force teams into base defense and then force them into no-win decisions

Its got some clips too - showing how they deployed Juice-chek and how MLF is likely to use Deguara.

https://touchdownwire.usatoday...its-of-21-personnel/

Putting this together we see how Shanahan and the 49ers remain effective out of 21 personnel. They have the ability to throw the football with success, but even when they keep the football on the ground, personnel and alignment puts them in positions to gain yardage in the running game. That makes them an extremely difficult offense to defend. How well the 49ers implement that 21 personnel package in 2020 ā€“ and how often ā€“ will be critical to their success in the season ahead.

They key is to have a guy athletic enough to be a threat in passing game and stout enough to block in space. The hope is that Deguara is that guy and the early returns are positive.
