I think the thing that probably saves him is that Crosby is comfortable with him as a holder.
Unless they shank 21 yarders constantly, the difference between an average punter and a good punter is negligible in terms of their effect on a game. That is why you should never waste a draft pick on one. One or two extra missed FGs during a season because of breaking in a new holder is not worth switching punters at this point.
Simply can't have that level of inconsistency from a fourth year player. Hope Gutey doesn't make the same mistake with Scott he made with Jimmy Graham.

How about training a backup RB or QB to hold for field goals? They could prove valuable if there’s a botched snap and run or pass if necessary and do a better job than a punter could do. Just sayin’….

I think every new GM in the league goes through this. Thinking drafting a punter/kicker in the mid to high rounds is a good idea.

Yep, that ended his career as a FG holder.
The mud held the ball in place for Favre, and it was a game-winner nonetheless.
No idea if the new punter will work out, but glad to see the organization move to attempt to remedy an obvious mistake.
Very strange story, I never understand talented specialists like this that can't hang in the NFL. It doesn't really seem as mentally taxing as the other positions, so if you can physically handle the job then what's the problem? Certainly he demonstrated a ton of skills at Bama.

Green Bay is a tough place to kick. A lot of southern players have done really well in Green Bay, Scott was not one of them. He looked like an Alabama kicker who got off at the wrong bus stop. I worry about who will hold for Crosby, but anything will be a punting upgrade.

I'd settle for a punter who forced the returner to cut back towards the middle of the field on a long return instead of not even getting over to the sideline.
Scott grew up in Denver so he wasn't a stranger to cold weather and I think his inconsistency was more of a mental thing. Perhaps a change of scenery will put his career back on track.
Wouldn't be the first punter to have a slow start to his career then turn into a reliable player.
Opie did well his first year, and then I think he started listening to Mennenga.
I just wonder if maybe NFL Punters have to hurry a bit more than they do in college as better, faster athletes are coming in for the block.
Especially when a guy like Scott has tremendous talent around him at Alabama, maybe he could “take his time” getting a punt off as the blocking around him was top of the line.
I think I remember something about a coach changing his timing, like he would start his forward steps before he caught the ball from the long snapper, or something like that, in order to get the punt off quicker.
I could be totally mistaken, tho.
