This rumor from January is really depressing in retrospect. Can we turn back the clock and give them Burnes and Peralta?

https://reviewingthebrew.com/2...mgarner-makes-sense/

Where does the trade package start?

The Giants are rumored to want one of Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff, or Corbin Burnes plus extras. Of the trio, only Burnes should be off limits. Peralta posted a 4.40 ERA with a 4.76 BB/9 in as a starter last year. Woodruff posted a 6.32 ERA in four starts last year, and ended up back in Triple-A before returning as a reliever. While they both hinted at their potential, neither really had a breakout season. Peralta will turn 23 in June, and Woodruff will turn 26 before Opening Day. Of the two, Woodruff makes the most sense for the Milwaukee Brewers as the centerpiece of a deal.

I’ll readily admit I’m not a Peralta fan.  He’s a one dimensional guy (fastball) and hasn’t developed a second reliable pitch much less a third.

Woodruff has been solid but Burnes is just puzzling.  He’s got all the right stuff but has regressed big time.

You wonder what DJ could have done with these guys as pitching coach?  Lots of guys have taken a step back this year.

I've been thinking the same as this season has progressed. It just seems strange that the majority of the pitching staff has forgotten how to pitch. Was he just getting these guys to over-achieve for a year?

I’m trying to figure out why so many of the pitchers have struggled this year and I keep going back to the fact they didn’t bring back their bullpen coach that was well liked and Derrick Johnson went to the Reds instead of staying in Milwaukee.

I would really like to know why that was other than money.  Seems to me DJ in particular is worth his weight in gold.

Makes you wonder if there’s a scenario (and when) for the Brewers to become sellers?  Grandal and Moose could net them some resources in return.

Ryan Braun only has one year at 17 million on his contract left next year and a 4 million dollar buyout after that.

He's on a pace to hit 22 HRs and drive in 73 this year. Might this be the time to  move him for some mid-level prospects and payroll relief?

The problem is that its very unlikely they'll fall too far behind to be at least in the mix for the wild card game in the next two weeks. They are only a half game back of that right now.

Gotta believe they're thinking they're still in it. Given the play of the NL this year, they are. Sure doesn't have that feel.

Playoff push with a pen of Matt Albers, Claudio, Freddy Peralta, etc...does not exactly inspire confidence.  If only Knebel doesn't get hurt, and one of Burnes/Peralta steps up it's a different season. Boohoo

You have to think that any buying this year can't be just to win the division, you have to acquire enough to beat the Dodgers.  We have an MVP and some real up and coming talent, but the pitching sucks balls.  You have to thing Grandal, Moose and Thames have something to offer a contender (even if you don't see a lot of midseason catcher trades).

So, you're saying you think the season is toast and you're disappointed they haven't been even worse?

Shame on you!

Dodgers look even better than they were last year and Milwaukee still couldn’t beat last years version.  Offensively, this team is as good if not better but the pitching is far from playoff caliber at this point.

Realistically, they need two starters and probably at least one if not two relief guys including possibly a closer.   The Brewers would have to empty their minor league system to get there + Hiura and I’m not sure that would still be enough to get them over the hump.

If you knew that Nelson would come back to 2017 form and at least one of the youngsters other than Woodruff could make the leap then maybe you consider making a couple of bold moves or additions.  Just not sure this is the right time or situation to do it.

I do have a lot of hope for Jimmy Nelson to come back, and I feel the same way about Shaw (I know it is only 5 games, but the Crew is better with Travis Shaw)

I’m not quite ready to give up on Shaw.  He’s had a rough season, but is showing signs of getting back on track. You look over the course of his stint with the Brewers and he’s been pretty damn good.

As for Nelson, I hope you are right.  It sucks because at the time of his injury he was pitching at a very high level and shoulder injuries are sketchy.   He may never return back to form.  I hope he does or at least can return to being a serviceable starter in the rotation because it’s one less position they have to address.

Not totally surprised on Chacin as he wasn’t as good or talented as he pitched last year and Chase Anderson is what he is- a borderline starter.   I rate Davies a bit higher because he’s had more prolonged success but he’s probably a 4/5 guy in the rotation.   Woodruff is a solid 2/3 guy but right now he’s the only starter I would feel comfortable marching out there in a playoff series.  It’s difficult because unlike last year their bullpen is also significantly worse.   Had Knebel and Wahl been healthy we probably have at least 5 more wins because they could have used Hader more effectively and not have to have relied upon stiffs liKe Claudio and Albers as much as they have.

Should be interesting the next couple of weeks to see what they do or don’t do on terms of making a deal or deals.

I don't think their season is toast and they are likely to compete for a wild card berth until the last week. I was responding to the people that want to get rid of guy's wholesale at this point. I should have have said "the situation is" rather than "The problem is"

The only guy I'd consider moving is Braun, because he's a good fit as a DH at this point in his career in the AL.

I like Chacin, but he looks more like a really good #4 starter and borderline #3.  Nelson would have been a #1 or #2 guy had he not damaged the shoulder so he is really missed though they did well without him last year.  The key to the future of the team is getting Burnes straightened out or traded for a guy that can be a #1 or #2 starter.  I loved the Nelson of 2017 but I have my doubts we'll see him get back to that the way things have been going.

Davies, Chacin, Anderson all seem like #4/#5 starters who have occasionally overachieved, but not consistently.   They really need minimum 1 starter who is a level above those 3.  Houser looks like he should go back to the bullpen even though he's had a couple of decent starts.  I don't see him being any better than those other 3 guys.

Edit:  Thank God for Woodruff.  He looks like the Nelson of 2017.  Hope he can stay healthy, looks like a horse the staff can be built around.

Peralta pitches into trouble and then gets himself out of it.

CC is taking more risks than I would. Bases loaded, up 5 runs. I'd have Hader in there to just get the one out. That's the way he used him last year. That's the difference with not having another guy you can trust to close.

Hader with 3 98 mile per hour fastballs in a row to end it.

i don't think Atlanta batter, Albies  saw any of them.

Brewers on a winning streak, against the 1st place Braves.

Definitely Anderson's best outing of the year. Nice to see Freddy able to have some success coming out of the pen. Almost starting to believe in him ...  kinda...ok not really. Junior gets knocked around again. Hader has another iffy finish - although primarily extended by Manny's error.

Think that's splits the season series with the Braves. Nnice !!

Now 5-4 in the 9th after a single by Donaldson. I can't see the game. How bad was the Pina throwing error that extend this?

Not really his fault...ball really skidded away from the plate and he had to make a long throw.

KesDaddy continues to amaze, .323 BA, .387 OBP, 40 H, 19 RBI, 41 SO, .605 SLG, .992 OPS in 137 PA over 33 games. Not bad kid.

Trying to patiently wait for pitching help, but the starters have looked really good of late. Would be encouraging to see Gio come on strong in his start on Saturday.

Hiura has looked really good.  It’s like him leveling up in terms of quality competition really hasn’t impacted his hitting at all.

What’s amazing to me is he’s not a big strong guy but his timing and contact skills (bat on ball) are exceptional and as a result can really drive the ball. Not all that dissimilar from Yelich although Yelich just doesn’t swing and miss much at all especially in comparison to some of his peers.

Pretty damned impressive outing for Davies last night. Got a lot of help- Cain with a “Not today!” In the first and then a running catch to save a run. Solid infield work too- 3 crucial double plays to kill 2-on, 1-out rallies. They weren’t getting anything off Kelly, so Davies has to keep them in it. Goes 7 full and doesn’t strike out a single batter.

Some fine small ball on offense once Kelly was done- double steal and an errant throw scores one, sac fly follows with Arcia on 3rd to plate the other run in that 3 run 8th. And that was after Arcia went up the middle with 2 strikes to bring in the go ahead run.

Starting to come around...

If I heard right the other day he has something like 13 or 14 multi-hit games in those 33 games. That's pretty impressive.

Yeah dude! Amazing. I’m happy they just tricked that DP. Would love to see Brewers steal this one.
