Because it’s Bill B. It’s likely we’ll never hear why Butler was benched.

The fact is. Butler played 98% of every defensive snap for NE the past three seasons.

On the surface. This appears to be the dumbest decision by a coach in Super Bowl history. There has to be a lot going on below the surface.

Butlers only comment on the matter after the game, “They gave up on me. ****. It is what it is”

If any other coach other Belichick would have

1. Benched his starting CB without explanation

2. Run a trick pass play on a critical third down to a 40 year old QB with about 7.0 40 speed. THEY HAVE GRONK.

3. Tried a reverse on a kickoff with a minute left and gotten tackled at the 8 (instead of getting it out to the 18 or 20 by running up the middle)

4. Had his team screw up a FG and XPs

their own fans would be calling for their heads. Belichick was terrible yesterday.

The corner that started in place of Butler was worked like a dishrag on the opening Philly Drive. Gave up the first TD to Jeffery. Butler didn’t even get a snap after Chung got knocked silly and really looked like he tried playing much of the second half in a daze.

Is this Bill giving Kraft and Brady the middle finger before he retires after the Jimmy G drama?

The only way this makes sense is if Butler pulled a Eugene Robinson. And that’s hard to believe because it would have to be a Minneapolis escort. Unless no teeth is your thing.

Not taking anything away from the job Philly did. The offensive game plan was outstanding. After the game Philly admitted they targeted Rowe. And Rowe wasn’t completely terrible. But he’s not as good as Butler. He just isn’t.

Rowe did play for Philly in 2015 so maybe Bill thought that was worth something???

Just a weird situation and decision.

When Chung got injured he appeared that he wouldn't be able to tell you what day it was when he walked off the field (the Eagles receiver even waived to the trainers that Chung was "sleepy" and made the sleeping signal after he waived). So how did Chung pass the concussion protocol to come back?

7.0 40 speed. You’re being kind!

I thought the Brady trick play was on 4th down?   Still.  A horrible play call at that time and situation.

I don't know..he was wide open...a little better pass and it may have worked...

It was a 3rd and 5 from the 35. This was the drive sequence (attached below). They went for it on 4th down and threw an incompletion on a deep pass to Gronk (a stereotypical throw long on short distance Rodgers/MM move). The Eagles were up 9-3 at that point and if Brady catches that pass it's at least 9-6. If they run up the middle and gain 2-3 yards instead of the trick play, they may even try the FG at that point.

Instead, they don't convert on 4th down, then the Eagles drive to go up 15-3. It was a huge turning point in the game as it set up the Patriots to have to battle back from a deep hole the rest of the game. The two trick plays to the QBs were the difference in the game. The Eagles gained 4 points on the Foles catch (as compared to a chip shot FG) and the Patriots lost at least 3 and more likely 7 points on Brady not being able to make the play.

  • 1st and 10 at NE 37

(13:11 - 2nd) T.Brady pass deep left to B.Cooks to PHI 40 for 23 yards (M.Jenkins) [N.Bradham]. NE-B.Cooks was injured during the play. He is Out.

  • 1st and 10 at PHI 40

    (12:49 - 2nd) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to J.White (M.Jenkins) [T.Jernigan].

  • 2nd and 10 at PHI 40

    (12:45 - 2nd) D.Lewis up the middle to PHI 35 for 5 yards (N.Bradham; C.Graham).

  • 3rd and 5 at PHI 35

    (12:04 - 2nd) (Shotgun) D.Amendola pass incomplete short right to T.Brady.

  • 4th and 5 at PHI 35

    (11:58 - 2nd) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete deep right to R.Gronkowski (J.Mills) [B.Graham].

Foles TD catch was 4th down. Great call because it worked.

Bonus points because he caught it in the exact same spot Matt Barkley caught his TD against the Vikings in the same end zone.

Double bonus points to Pederson for recognizing the brilliance of the play design and practicing it to perfection and unloading it at the perfect time.

apparently, the benching included a small infraction..?

NFL Butler benching

Which just adds to the mystery of what’s really going on.

Right before a divisional playoff game against KC in January 2016. A shirtless Chandler Jones stumbled into a Foxboro police station on his own, got on his knees and locked his hands behind his head to surrender. Result of a bad trip on synthetic weed. Cops that went to his residence said it reeked of “burnt marijuana”

Chandler Jones played against KC later that week. Then again in the AFC Championship game a week later.

Maybe Bill swore he’d never repeat the same mistake?

Butler just released a statement that he didn’t attend a concert over SB weekend. Didn’t miss a curfew. Or do any of the things being reported.

Butler had to release something like that. Not good to hit the FA market with that hanging over your head.

Bill might sit back and see if Kraft has the marbles to fire him.

Completely agree that he’s mad as hell he didn’t have a say about Jimmy G.

I agree with the Jimmy G angle and the follow statement from Kraft basically claiming his control of the team during SB week, i.e. Brady decides when Brady wants to leave. Now with Josh burning bridges across the NFL - his only future HC is in NE - I see BB stepping down somewhere between the draft and the start of training camp. Probably need to get all the open contracts settled - then poof...

I think Belichick is "retiring" inside of a week or so.

I believe he is really REALLY pissed off about being forced to trade Jimmy GOATrapollo.

Patriots run is just about over if Billy B leaves

Daniels is now staying in NE and left the Colts standing at the alter. Apparently Bobby Kraft substantially sweetened his OC $$ deal. Many rumors are now swirling the reason Josh ditched the Colts because he's been told Billy B is out soon and it's job for the taking. It wouldn't shock me if Bilicheat took his circus elsewhere.

BB will leave for good before going elsewhere, unless he can go to an established QB who is on the cusp of being top-shelf. Raiders come to mind, Texans, or some team on the verge. I can’t see him wanting to start from scratch basically. Also, you have to remember that a large part of his success is due to Patricia, who’s  been with him 14 years. Now that he’s gone, BB for sure didn’t want to lose McDaniels and have to break in two new coordinators.

???? Raiders just signed Gruden to a gigantic deal. He has no chance of going there unless it's as a "consultant"

Texans, I can see. Maybe even Cleveland. LOL!
