UFA - snubbed, got a chip on his shoulder, is he a #1 cb?

What did he do yesterday to get benched?
Butler is not fast and would be a penalty machine in GB. I wildly cheered his Int against the Seasucks but he is mostly hype!! He also will want large dollars and to play the Pats regularly - look for him in the AFC East
Because itâs Bill B. Itâs likely weâll never hear why Butler was benched.
The fact is. Butler played 98% of every defensive snap for NE the past three seasons.
On the surface. This appears to be the dumbest decision by a coach in Super Bowl history. There has to be a lot going on below the surface.
Butlers only comment on the matter after the game, âThey gave up on me. ****. It is what it isâ
Per the NFL network news scroll BB said the benching was not disciplinary. Very strange he didn't play not once on defense.
If any other coach other Belichick would have
1. Benched his starting CB without explanation
2. Run a trick pass play on a critical third down to a 40 year old QB with about 7.0 40 speed. THEY HAVE GRONK.
3. Tried a reverse on a kickoff with a minute left and gotten tackled at the 8 (instead of getting it out to the 18 or 20 by running up the middle)
4. Had his team screw up a FG and XPs
their own fans would be calling for their heads. Belichick was terrible yesterday.
Sounds like poor Billy B didn't have any inside info on the Eagles. Coaching is easy when you know what play is coming.
The corner that started in place of Butler was worked like a dishrag on the opening Philly Drive. Gave up the first TD to Jeffery. Butler didnât even get a snap after Chung got knocked silly and really looked like he tried playing much of the second half in a daze.
Is this Bill giving Kraft and Brady the middle finger before he retires after the Jimmy G drama?
The only way this makes sense is if Butler pulled a Eugene Robinson. And thatâs hard to believe because it would have to be a Minneapolis escort. Unless no teeth is your thing.
Foles and re receivers made great plays under good coverage. Not sure difference was butler. But the story is interesting and B.B may be walking Kraft and TB12 deserve his middle finger fr the outside view.
Not taking anything away from the job Philly did. The offensive game plan was outstanding. After the game Philly admitted they targeted Rowe. And Rowe wasnât completely terrible. But heâs not as good as Butler. He just isnât.
Rowe did play for Philly in 2015 so maybe Bill thought that was worth something???
Just a weird situation and decision.
Agreed. Would like to know the true story.

When Chung got injured he appeared that he wouldn't be able to tell you what day it was when he walked off the field (the Eagles receiver even waived to the trainers that Chung was "sleepy" and made the sleeping signal after he waived). So how did Chung pass the concussion protocol to come back?

I thought the Brady trick play was on 4th down? Still. A horrible play call at that time and situation.

I don't know..he was wide open...a little better pass and it may have worked...
Like most plays similar to that one. Itâs a fantastic play call if it works.
Watching Brady struggling to catch that ball I have to think he dropped a number of balls while they ran it in practice.
Oh sure. If it worked we wouldn't be talking about its failure. However, if it was 3rd down, I wouldn't be so critical as they still had a play to get the first in that situation.
A play like that is high reward BUT ALSO very high risk in that situation and juncture of the game.

He said afterward he caught it in practice....
It was a 3rd and 5 from the 35. This was the drive sequence (attached below). They went for it on 4th down and threw an incompletion on a deep pass to Gronk (a stereotypical throw long on short distance Rodgers/MM move). The Eagles were up 9-3 at that point and if Brady catches that pass it's at least 9-6. If they run up the middle and gain 2-3 yards instead of the trick play, they may even try the FG at that point.
Instead, they don't convert on 4th down, then the Eagles drive to go up 15-3. It was a huge turning point in the game as it set up the Patriots to have to battle back from a deep hole the rest of the game. The two trick plays to the QBs were the difference in the game. The Eagles gained 4 points on the Foles catch (as compared to a chip shot FG) and the Patriots lost at least 3 and more likely 7 points on Brady not being able to make the play.
1st and 10 at NE 37
(13:11 - 2nd) T.Brady pass deep left to B.Cooks to PHI 40 for 23 yards (M.Jenkins) [N.Bradham]. NE-B.Cooks was injured during the play. He is Out.
1st and 10 at PHI 40
(12:49 - 2nd) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to J.White (M.Jenkins) [T.Jernigan].
2nd and 10 at PHI 40
(12:45 - 2nd) D.Lewis up the middle to PHI 35 for 5 yards (N.Bradham; C.Graham).
3rd and 5 at PHI 35
(12:04 - 2nd) (Shotgun) D.Amendola pass incomplete short right to T.Brady.
4th and 5 at PHI 35
(11:58 - 2nd) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete deep right to R.Gronkowski (J.Mills) [B.Graham].
Foles TD catch was 4th down. Great call because it worked.
Bonus points because he caught it in the exact same spot Matt Barkley caught his TD against the Vikings in the same end zone.
Double bonus points to Pederson for recognizing the brilliance of the play design and practicing it to perfection and unloading it at the perfect time.
I read that article too.
I don't know that the pass to Brady was bad. More like Brady's legs forgot they were 40 years old.
The pass to Brady was at the wrong time. It just wasn't the perfect time in the game to do it. I thought it deflated them a little bit and showed that the Pats were a little desperate at that point cuz they knew they were in trouble.
Thanks for posting the link on Butler. Seems illness may have been part of it but BB couldn't say that since he didn't put that on the injury report.

Which just adds to the mystery of whatâs really going on.
Right before a divisional playoff game against KC in January 2016. A shirtless Chandler Jones stumbled into a Foxboro police station on his own, got on his knees and locked his hands behind his head to surrender. Result of a bad trip on synthetic weed. Cops that went to his residence said it reeked of âburnt marijuanaâ
Chandler Jones played against KC later that week. Then again in the AFC Championship game a week later.
Maybe Bill swore heâd never repeat the same mistake?
Definite schisms going on in Foxboro.
Maybe Bill is angling to leave the whole show, considering his OC and DC are leaving, the timing is perfect.
I think Belichick is "retiring" inside of a week or so.
I believe he is really REALLY pissed off about being forced to trade Jimmy GOATrapollo.
Patriots run is just about over if Billy B leaves
Sweet then just as Pettine was a consultant last year, BB can be our "consultant" this year. We know he has a fondness for M3.
Butler just released a statement that he didnât attend a concert over SB weekend. Didnât miss a curfew. Or do any of the things being reported.
Butler had to release something like that. Not good to hit the FA market with that hanging over your head.
Bill might sit back and see if Kraft has the marbles to fire him.
Completely agree that heâs mad as hell he didnât have a say about Jimmy G.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.
2. Run a trick pass play on a critical third down to a 40 year old QB with about 7.0 40
Still faster than AJ Hawk.
I agree with the Jimmy G angle and the follow statement from Kraft basically claiming his control of the team during SB week, i.e. Brady decides when Brady wants to leave. Now with Josh burning bridges across the NFL - his only future HC is in NE - I see BB stepping down somewhere between the draft and the start of training camp. Probably need to get all the open contracts settled - then poof...
Is Malcolm "packer people" material?
Whoever coined the phrase âLosing builds characterâ never visited Minnesota.
He'd be Viking people. He was on the losing team.

Daniels is now staying in NE and left the Colts standing at the alter. Apparently Bobby Kraft substantially sweetened his OC $$ deal. Many rumors are now swirling the reason Josh ditched the Colts because he's been told Billy B is out soon and it's job for the taking. It wouldn't shock me if Bilicheat took his circus elsewhere.
BB will leave for good before going elsewhere, unless he can go to an established QB who is on the cusp of being top-shelf. Raiders come to mind, Texans, or some team on the verge. I canât see him wanting to start from scratch basically. Also, you have to remember that a large part of his success is due to Patricia, whoâs been with him 14 years. Now that heâs gone, BB for sure didnât want to lose McDaniels and have to break in two new coordinators.
Who would give him control?

???? Raiders just signed Gruden to a gigantic deal. He has no chance of going there unless it's as a "consultant"
Texans, I can see. Maybe even Cleveland. LOL!
What if Brady went to Kraft and demanded Josh stayed put?
Holy **** this entire thing could be growing tentacles.
And Josh just committed coaching suicide. Hoping blue shirt/white collar gave him the legacy deal.
I hope someone sent an EMT or an UBER to Irsays house tonight. Or both.
Forgot about Gruden in Oakland. ok, Texas it is!
Brady can subside on all the almond skins rolled in sea kelp extract as nature can provide. But next year is another next year.
You cant continually beat back NFL seasons. You canât.
This more than anything makes Josh McDaniels a dumbass.
bspn article with sources "close to the situation" claim McD had second thoughts about IND because of strain on moving family, familiarity and relationships with NE. Then WTF do you interview and accept a job with IND to begin with? You'd think he is at his first job out of school.

McDaniels is a dumbass if Andrew Luck comes back healthy within the next year.
McDaniels would be committing career suicide as a head coach if Luck never comes back. Two stints as a failed head coach are usually all you get. Then you become a career coordinator.
Andrew Luck is what makes that job a good one.
Some guys are just better coordinators.
Pettine, for example. But he knows it -- at least that's what he says.
A healthy Luck is what makes that job a good one. A healthy Jacoby Brissette not so much.

Thinking Tebow was a franchise QB looks almost sane in comparison. He's going full Lane Kiffin. Never go full Lane Kiffin.
Can someone remind me what Terrell Buckley Malcolm Butler did besides that one play in the Super Bowl?
Started three years as the #1 corner for Bill Belichick.
Pretty much irrelevant though. Indy is going to send him a blank check when FA starts.

Skip to about 30 seconds. He's shown he can cover and be a good tackler. But you do wonder where his head is at sometimes. Mike Pettine apparently covets a good DB field vs mass pass rushers. Which, if true, is interesting. Usually a decent pass rush covers up a lot of warts from a less then stellar cornerback group.
Colvin would be less expensive and good in the slot, but I'd also like someone who can run with the burners on the outside. GB cannot get slower; we need some speed on both D and O.
A million times this.

He overthrew Brady....launched it off his back foot because he was getting chased....not a bad throw...just not good enough to get it done. I don't put that one on Brady...he was wide open.
So are you saying Brady made some great moves on the defender to get open?
35yr old brady gets under that ball.
45 year old Brady catches an on target pass.
Brady catches it if the ball wasnt so inflated.
I'm guessing that play isn't practiced much in Foxboro so I can understand the guy not anticipating Brady's speed. I also understand the guy who threw the ball wasn't a QB.
If Brady drops the pass in the forest and nobody is there to see it does it make a sound when it hits the turf?
45 Bradys want to know.

Depends on what the ball is inflated to.
There's already been a deflated post.
Tucked balls make no sound. Except in C-Woods nightmares.

Better than the current No Balls.
Mouth balls seems more appropriate.
Well, now that I've read this article I absolutely want the Packers to pick up Butler.
Long story short: Butler doesnât fit what Thompson often looked for in a cornerback, both in terms of measurements and athletic testing.
Given how terrible our cornerbacks have been, it's clear they're doing it wrong and Malcom is the way to go.
George Costanza theory
They fired Capers, wasn't he the problem with the defense?
