My husband was reading a magazine and he noticed an article about Clarence Smoyer and a book about him. He was in the Spearhead Division in WWII. So was my dad. I said that my folks always used to chum with some Smoyers at the army reunions. After some investigation I found out yes, the same Clarence Smoyer. He and my dad were in the same company. My dad was never mentioned, but he would have been one of the other "Shermans" in the company. I read the book in one day. Had to take time out once in a while to find a tissue. What they all went through.  I can be so grateful that my dad made it through that war and came home.

Spearhead: An American Gunner...

Also, I found some letters my dad wrote home to my aunt and uncle, and comparing with the book I could tell they were written during the "lulls" and so very generic because they had to be approved first.

I THINK my dad might have gotten into one of the pictures, but the person in the photo is so far away I can't recognize the face. But the shape would have been like him and he always liked to stand with his hands in his pockets.

I know this should have probably been put in Favorite Books.. but I don't know how to cross post or if I'm allowed to be the one to do it.

A little update: Spearhead is now in script production in Hollywood! Also, an author is in the research phase of a new book about the company my dad and Clarence were in. I sent him files of pictures my dad took during his time in WWII. The author was quite impressed with some of them. My dad didn't take ones during the battles, obviously, but he took quite a few of his buddies and the places they stayed, etc. My favorite is the one of two guys in a rowboat and on the other side he put, "Fishing with grenades."
