Wonder if Eliot ever called ted "grandpa"?
I understand why Ted is invisible, or at least perceived as such. As Satori said a man has to understand his limitations, and Ted is too laconic and practical to want to talk in public much. All it can do is create media spin and selectiveness designed to foster the idea that there is a rift between Ted and the coaches, or that Ted is even more clueless than Fat Mike.
Ted is a regular order guy. GM's GM, and coaches coach. It's that simple.
I just want Ted to do more press availabilities because IMO he is one of the cleverest and, to me, funniest guys out there. You get some pearl of wisdom coupled with an eye wink, figuratively, with each and every answer!
There's a like below it to a Dougherty article on how TT's draft misses since 2010 have really hurt the team and it's come to roost this season.
I was watching Chuck Knoll's "A Football Life" on NFL network & a part really reminded me of the Packers situation right now. Knoll's wife said that he told her that their talent was depleted by drafting so late for many consecutive years & this was a factor in him thinking that he should retire. Of course this was before free agency as we know it, so the draft was really about the only way to build your team. Since TT rarely looks to Free Agency, we are essentially experiencing the same thing that happened to Knoll & the Steelers.
One of the issues with TT's drafting hasn't been that he's drafted low, but that he's flat-out missed so often with his first-round picks lately. Sherrod, Perry, Jones, Randall and Clark are none reliable starters at this point, and Clinton-Dix is still inconsistent. That's not even saying they should be stars, but just reliable starters.

Except that the Steelers didn't have to worry about balancing the cap and losing FA's to other teams. But an interesting comparison nonetheless.
I would have to believe if it were indeed true that drafting near the end of each round for consecutive years eventually depleted team talent, a savvy GM would plan for that, and could trade picks or otherwise acquire talent accordingly.
I'll even say that TT has essentially done this over the years; trading up to get Matthews and Lacy are the best examples.
If their is a fault in TT's strategy, I'd say that he has been over-reliant on keeping UFDAs on the roster. Although we've had some success at it, and the Packers probably do it better than anyone else, they would likely be ahead in the long run to spend the money acquiring FAs to fill holes. Not in every case, of course, but more balanced than the way they've done the last 2-3 years.
